Need to Understand the Display on Home Theater System

I have a Sony STR-KS2300 home theater system and an Apple TV (2nd gen). Even though I'm pretty sure that the Apple TV supports 5.1 sound, I'm not sure that I'm getting true surround sound. The lights on the front of the amp have little icons for each speaker. I can see all 5 speakers lit up, but only the front speakers have symbols inside the box icons. When I watch a blu-ray, for example, usually all 5 boxes have an icon in the center. I do hear sound in the rear speakers but I'm not sure if it's just passing stereo sound to those speakers to fake true surround sound. Anyone know just what those icons mean and what I should be expecting from the Apple TV? Forgot to mention that I am connecting the Apple TV to my home theater system via HDMI.

Use the Mic to calibrate the system Pg 26 of the manual.
Sony receivers are a little confusing with there terms. Continues pressing of the A.F.D. button and you will toggle through the sound fields from A.F.D. Auto ( best for Dolby Digital), Dolby PL 4.1, PL MV 5.1(movie), PL MS (music) 5.1, Multi ST (multi channel stereo). Go through the sound field and listen for what sounds good to you.
What are streaming with Apple TV music or movies? Apple has 5.1 pass through if you have those tracks on your computer. Most sound is passed in stereo mode.

I have calibrated it already and have played with all of those settings many times. It works great for other devices. I have a PS3 and when watching blu-ray movies I get all icons lit up with the icons in the middle, indicating that I am getting true surround sound. Same if I use my Boxee Box and watch an MKV from a network share.

I am wanting to watch HD movies rented via the iTunes store. I get the same issue when watching Netflix movies, but I can't be sure those are 5.1 anyway.

Now that I have talked it out, it sounds like it's definitely an issue on the Apple TV side. Perhaps I should contact Apple support or their discussion groups.

It looks like this is definately an Apple TV problem. See the following thread for a ton of people with the same issue:

Wondering if you found a solution in the Apple forum and if so which (of the many) applied to you?
