Chronicle - quick review

Andrew has an abusive father, and decides to basically film his existence starting with his senior year in high school. Andrew and his cousin Matt, along with a high school acquaintance, Steve, go spelunking in a hole in the ground near the grounds of a high school party. The camera comes in handy in telling the story of what happened to those 3 students when they found something not of this earth, and black out, only to wake up with telekinetic powers. Not everyone in the group has finesse with their new powers, Andrew has far better control than Matt. Steve is more athletic, and finds more active use of his powers. The script is quite clever in using Andrew's new-found powers for interesting camerawork, and spares us the shaky-cam-ness that afflicted "Cloverfield".

I wish the film was a little smarter in the final act, but overall, still a compelling film of young adults dealing with their new-found telekinesis.

I give it 3 stars, or a grade of B.

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Just a quick question. I thought the powers that these kids gained was invulnerability. They can get hit by buses, slammed through walls but can get impaled ? Weird.

Made no sense to have someone get impaled after all the other feats we saw.

Telekinesis, finely tuned, can act like a force field, if actively used by the person. But if you aren't prepared for an attack, the force field won't be "up" to protect you.

^ This was demonstrated with the tennis ball throwing scene early on.

And with the fights of Andrew vs. his Father (he did not block his father's punch) and Andrew vs. Matt (he did block Matt's).

Is it wrong that I was disappointed when Matt caught Andrew's father as he was falling? That would have still been a far better death than he deserved.

Overall I thought this was a real waste of time with nothing that even came close to being original.
So far it is at the bottom of the list for movies I have seen this year.

I personally can't stand too many superhero movies. Or, I should say that I find them mildly entertaining but the majority of them can never reach a "good" level because of how stupid they are.

I was a little worried going into this thing but I thought it was pretty good. I'd use the word smart here because I liked what the screenwriter and directed did with the material. I'd use the word original as well. In fact, after the movie was over I was rather shocked that no one had tried something like this earlier. I also give them credit for making the ending as dark as they did. There were a few flaws but for the most part I was happy with it.

It was what it was. I enjoyed it but I'll probably forget about it soon enough. What pulled me out of the picture was the 'found footage' format. No one carries a video camera around and films, literally, their entire day. And when it was no longer feasible for him to carry his camera, he hovers it and films himself. I would have rather they'd kept the appearance of a low budget film apart from the special effects.

Oh, and two people holding video cameras filming each other in conversation while at a party? Really?
