Audio delay, then crackling, then fine

Hi all,
I've been unable to find anyone with my exact problem so I though I'd ask and see if anyone knows.
I recently purchased a Blu-ray player and so, wanting to get better audio, I got an optical audio cable and connected the TV to the DVD player (which is also the speaker system, that's why it wasn't already using an optical cable). All my inputs are connected to the TV via HDMI, which I know is bad practice from reading other forums but the DVD player doesn't have an HDMI in.
The problem is that since getting the optical cable, when turning all the equipment on, there is quite a long delay (probably around 2 minutes) until audio starts coming out. When it does start it is in small bursts and crackly. After another minute it is consistently on but still crackling. It can take another minute or two before the audio is back to normal.
This only seems to happen when the equipment has been rested all day so it's been quite hard diagnosing the issue when I have to wait a day to test again (especially when my parent are home before me and always turn it on). I have now plugged in the old red/white stereo cables and instructed my dad to flick between Digital-In and Aux to see if it applies to both inputs.
Has anyone come across this issue before, and if so do you have any suggestions?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

So just to verify the Blu-ray player is connected to the TV via HDMI, and then your TV is sending the audio to the Panasonic Home Theater in a Box?  I would connect the optical digital out from the Blu-ray player to the Panasonic for audio, and the HDMI to the TV for video.  You may need to go to the setup menu in the Blu-ray player to configure this.  See if you still have the problem if you hook it up that way.

The Panasonic has no optical in. It has no HDMI-In either, which is why it was using red/white stereo cables before.
It has got a coaxial in so a converter is possible. I am just worried that it might be something faulty that might not be fixed by getting the converter.

I have just tested the equipment after getting home and found that the connection in the back of the TV is a bit dodgy.
Would it be best to try and completely bypass the TV?
I found this switch - 4 x 1 HDMI Mini Switch w/ Remote + Toslink / Coaxial Audio Output - and I'm just curious as to your opinions. Am I right in thinking that this will allow me to plug in the Freesat and Blu-ray via HDMI then output video to the TV via HDMI and audio to the DVD Player via toslink?
I read that I wouldn't get true HD surround sound without connecting via HDMI, but this isn't possible for me. So will this give me 5.1 surround sound, just not HD?

EDIT
Scrap that idea... I can't find that adapter to buy anywhere in the UK. From what I can see, I have two options.
1. An optical audio switcher. Seems like they all have to be manually switched via a rotary mechanism, this seems annoying.
I also found some little devices used to split one signal into two. Could this work backwards? Combining both Blu-ray and Freesat into one?
2. A device that I can use to split a HDMI cable into a HDMI ouput and optical output. I can't seem to find any but surely this, or something similar, must exist

Which connection on the back of your TV is dodgy?

Really, the best solution (especially for the long term) will be to replace the Panasonic all-in-one home theater system to something that can actually DO what you want it to do.

Something built around a real A/V receiver that allows you to connect all your sources (even the ones you don't yet know you want) at their highest quality connection and realize their full capabilities (audio and video).

Anything else, IMO, is just finding a band-aid solution that may buy you some time, but only gets you closer to the dead-end that many bundled HTiB systems tend to be.

Sorry to be so blunt, but that's just how I see it.
