Galactica 1980

I tried a search to see if there were old forums on Gallactica 1980. I purchased the dvd when it was released a few years back and started to watching it again. I was a huge fan of the original gallactica series/premise in 1978. I got a good deal on the 1978 series and it is in mail. I always like watch sci-fi shows, especially as the plots developed over the life of the show.

I really like Kent McCord as Troy (Boxie) as he does a decent job in his role. Troy also pays homage to his parents (mom died in the original series and also that he misses Apollo). I was not overly impressed with Dillon (Barry Van Dyke), because he look more like a ditz in the series. I was thinking that maybe his character was designed along lines of his dad (Dick Van Dyk).

The first three episodes were intriguing with them finding earth and doing the jump into the past to try help earth move their technology forward. However, there was not a good feed into 4th episode to explain what happen after episode 3, especially in lieu it was discussed that Xavier had headed to 1776 United States and Jamie made the comment about wanting to meet Benjamin Franklin.

The superscouts and spaceball were very good with the kids. I thought the kids added some comedic relief to the storylines, especially with then explaining solar system and/or life beyond the milky way. I like spaceball as it was like watching bad news bears changing to aliens. It was well done script as well.

I the night of cylon is also very funny with the costume along with how the cylons have taken human form. The human form is neat due to fact the re-imagined Battlestar Gallactica used this approach in their series.

The return of starbuck was neat as i was a huge fan of Dirk Benedict/Starbuck. I like how the plot shows how Dr Z came to gallactica. Dr Z is interesting as he was changed from Oliver (Brady Buncy) to Patrick Stuart. I always found it was interesting the Commander Adama would consult the Whiz Kid before he would go to council. I think there were a few episodes/scripts that were never produced, like a follow up to return of starbuck.

It was quite sad that the show was cancel after only 10 episodes, but that is life. i still cherish Galactica and Galactica 1980 as classic space show.

Paul-

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on Galactica 1980.  Its been a while since I have watched the DVDs so I'm not as familiar with them as you are.  It seems like the plan was to have a guest star from the original series in just about every episode.  The Return of Starbuck was a very interesting episode; I think an attempt to bridge the two series and try to explain some of the "higher power" things that happened to Starbuck at the end of the original series. I think night of the cylon was a two or three part episode.  It was the one that reminded me the most of the original series.....maybe because of the guest appearance of the "regular" cylons from the original series.  While its interesting, I think 1980 deserves its reputation as the week link in the Galactica TV universe, but still should be watched by any Galactica Fan.

Those like me who are fans of the original series take the traditional view of Galactica 1980 that was summed up by original series writer Terrence McDonnell at the 1993 15 Yahren Convention. When mentioning "Galactica 1980" in passing, it was delivered with contempt followed by a spit gesture. The crowd applauded vigorously.

Yes, "Return Of Starbuck" was a noble effort to give the fans a taste of the original as they waved goodbye, but even there it doesn't measure up to the original series at its finest. Creatively, I have been among those who have tried to bridge the two series together with fanfic stories, but it's a challenge that all of us wish never had been presented to us in the first place. I am among those who at age 11 when I first saw the promos for G80 thought, "Horray! They're bringing it back and picking things up with them discovering Earth." Then we all tuned in with shock to discover everyone gone except Lorne Greene and seeing all these strangers, and then discovering that ABC's promos had been deceptive in nature on all levels (using only footage of the non-existent Cylon attack of Earth). The hate relationship had been established from the get-go.

We of course didn't realize that the absence of Richard Hatch, Dirk Benedict etc. had been due to the fact that the cast contracts had expired after the show was canceled and thus, when ABC brought it back they were under no compulsion to return like Pierce Brosnan was to "Remington Steele" later in the decade. That said, the show wouldn't have been embraced if the same scripts had been done with Hatch, Benedict etc. It might have been a little more palatable, but it still would have been a bad idea. The true last episode of Galactica remains the wonderful "Hand Of God" and how things happened next remain open in the minds of the creative fans who've tackled that in the years since. Though the fact we were denied the continuation we waited so many years with the patience of Job for and saw instead some other show stealing the name and creating something even worse than G80 was not what we had in mind.

Excellent post!

I disappointed as well when the Gallactica 1980 came out, especially when intro show images from the previous 1978 tv series. What i find interesting is that the premise is supposed to be 30 years into the future and yet the viper has not been upgrade. One would think they would have passed many planets that had raw materials they could have used to update their aircraft. The last few episode had them run into another human race, which had the raw materials to help upgrade their fleets. The night of the cylon is great episode as it ties to battle with the cylons and how they have taken a human look to themselves. I still give show credit for using Kent McCord as Troy as he is a great actor. However, i still see his acting similar how he approach adam-12 with calm approach to solving matters. It was more Dillon (Van Dyke) that tend to not do things by the book, like with bank when he was trying to sell his gold and gal thought he was holding up the bank.

I read somewhere like Star Trek there was mass letter writing campaign that had networks wanting to bring the show back. However, i like star trek they tried to push scripts and/or different direction through and that caused issues with plots (Episode 1-2-3 talk about moving earth technology forwrd) then in Episode 4 it is no longer an issue. The rest of episodes and different purpses with focus on kids or return of the cylons or return of starbuck.

I am glad for dvd that i can watch this classic space show and share my enjoyment with people that have similar interests in classic sci-fi!!

I liked the series but I will admit that there is no comparison with the original series. I thought Battlestar Galactica was a really excellent sci-fi series and had so much potential. They could have done so much with the 1980 series but alas, it was not meant to be.

Hey Dhammer,

I totally agree there was so much they could have done with Galactica 1980. I realize the original series was cut due to its high production costs and Galactica 1980 was created based on fans writing in requesting the 1978 show to be re-started. I read somewhere that a script was given to Richard Hatch and he decline it. Dirk Benedict was unavailable due other commitments, so the only cast members brought back were boomer and adama.

I am glad for dvds that i can see this show again and i can watch it at my leisure. I decided to watch Galactica 1980 again for sentimental reasons as i had an appetite to see Galactica again. I have order the 1978 series so i can complete my set.

I am glad for threads like this that i can chat with people that have similar interests as me!!

I posted this from a fan who posted o this on the Galactica thread i believe. http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Battlestar_Galactica:_Year_Two_proposalhttp://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Battlestar_Galactica:_Year_Two_proposal

Galactica can be found on METV on Sunday afternoons. I have looked at the prints and I think they have improved from what we saw in the past here in Chicago on METV. I hope Galactica might go HD.

Thanks Mark,

There is some interesting information on Gallactica 1980, especially on epsiodes. I did read something they had plan a sequel to Return of Starbuck, which would have Starbuck return to gallactica via the ship of lights.

There are many directions the show could have taken due to fact they have return to Earth. The last few episodes of Gallactica 1980 touched on the cylons were still pursuing the gallactica and had taken human form. I am looking forward to see how the new series blood and chrome does as it will give us an opportunity to see a young adama. There is also the possibily the re-imagined could take do something now that Gallactica has reached earth. So, there could be another series in works in a few years.

The episode you refer to is called "Wheel of Fire". If you google it, you should be able to find a copy of the script to this episode out there somewhere (I think it was on the old Kobol.com pages, because I downloaded it a few yahrens ago).

Also, it has been said that the cast and crew were in the middle of filming the episode "The Day They Kidnapped Cleopatra" when the cancellation order came down from ABC, so there should have been at least some footage out there from this other "lost" episode...

I think I died a little bit inside when it was revealed Cylons were vulnerable to microwave ovens. smiley_wink.gif

I liked how "The Return of Starbuck" was incorporated into one of the Galactica telemovies. That was about all one could see of G'80 for years until ScFi dug it up in the 90's

There is a feature film edit of Galactica 1980 called "Conquest of the Earth". It combines unrelated episodes, and even has Baltar back chasing the fleet. (Via stock footage and new dialog dubbed in.) The switch in actors playing Dr. Zee is explained away too. One notable shot not in the series has Adama making his log entry about finding Earth with a photo of Apollo visible on his desk.

EDIT: Just found out you can watch the whole movie over at NBC.com

conquest of earth was cool because there was some new footage in it. it is similar to mission galactica the cylon attack which has some great unseen footage in it. as far as the year two proposal for the original series it stunk. commander Cain was supposed to be a cylon. Sheba is killed in the first episode and Athena was going to be played by a new actress. starbuck and Apollo were going to change roles where Apollo would be the skirt chaser.

I remember when the series aired, I was extremely dismissive of it. It was coming at the end of a long period of sci-fi shows that pandered to kids, and worse, talked down to them. But after re-watching on DVD a few years ago, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the episodes hold up well for the most part. They're fun, and with that in mind, I recommend them to anyone who enjoyed the original show.

Well, a big part of the problem there was the 7pm Sunday timeslot that ABC imposed, because there were certain FCC regulations at that time about programming at 7pm Sundays (had to be news, educational or aimed at children).
