I would like to spend less that $1,000 on the bookshelf speakers, and they will be for mostly home theater use.

I just know the MSB-02 speakers are much more expensive. As far as technical differences, just go to the site in my link above, and compare them.

for $149 over your budget - can get the sub as well as the bookshelf speakers - will fill out that home theater sound. There are not too many bookshelf speakers that don't need to be pared with a sub.

I am already have a def tech super cube II as a sub. I don't know very much about speakers...is this a sub I should keep?

I also have a def tech pro1000 as a center. I bought this due to the small size. Should I sell this? since I will not be buying def tech bookshelf's?

Are you satisfied with its performance? Have you compared it to other subs you have heard?

We normally recommend having the front 3 speakers from at least the same manufacturer if not the same line or better yet, all 3 identical. It gives you a seamless front stage when all 3 are timbre matched. Surrounds aren't as critical when matching. Subs rarely match unless it is SVS. But in their case, they started as a subwoofer company before getting into speakers. Rarely do speaker companies make good subs.

I haven't compared it against any other subs. I am satisfied at times, I think may need a more powerful receiver. I'm currently running a Pioneer Elite VSX-30. From reading it seems many people are running additional amps. Since my system is mostly used for movies, someone recommend the pioneer SC series and said that I could bypass using an additional amp. I feel lost....lol.

The VSX-30 is basically a regular Pioneer 920 which doesn't have the strongest amp section out there and it doesn't have pre-outs so adding an external amp isn't a possibility. The SC series (the true "Elite" receivers) amp section is much, much better. I currently have an SC-27. Marantz, Onkyo's and Denon's also have very good amps in them but the best might be Harman kardon. I had an H/K 7550HD for a while and it was stronger than just about anything else I've had so far. Didn't like the fact that EZSetEQ isn't user adjustable. But a very nice receiver.

For the bookshelf speakers, how about the Def Tech 1000's for the fronts and 800's for the surrounds? Should be around $750 plus shipping or tax. Then a bigger sub and a better receiver. This can get very expensive very quickly. But when you're done you won't want to leave the house smile.gif .

Thanks. Whats the difference between the SC-27 and SC-55? I had thought about getting def tech for the fronts, but I seemed to see better reviews with the SVS and B&W's.

They've made two SC series receivers every year for the last 4 years. First, the 05 and 07, then the 25 and 27, followed by the 35 and 37 and this year it's the 55 and 57. I had a 35 last year for a short while but had the chance to make a quick buck on it so I sold it. Bought the 27 last month and really like it. There are rumours the X7 models have better Digital to Analog Converters (DAC's) and some other internal parts than the X5 models but I've never really investigated those claims. So, the 27 is two years older but a higher model than the 55. I've also never compared the features of the SC models released over the years because I really don't use the latest features found on these newer models like streaming, iPod and Bluetooth, Internet Radio, etc. maybe someday, but not today.

SVS, B & W, HSU, Paradigm. There are many high quality speakers out there but as Robert said, try and stick to the same brand, at least for the front three. .

Good to know. I will into the SC57. Now that I have that settled, I will most likely sell my center and keep my sub (since I'm already spending enough money as it is). If you were given up $1,500 to spend on a center and bookshelf speakers, what would be the best option in your opinion (keeping in mind it will be used 90% for movies)?
