A few words about...™ Malcolm X -- in Blu-ray

Although I don't believe that it ever occurred, I was thrilled learn, back in 1992, that Spike Lee and Ernest Dickerson were considering making a handful of 70mm blow-ups on Malcolm X, one of the most beautifully photographed films of the era.

I must admit, that before seeing Mr. Lee's film, I had little concept of who Malcolm X was beyond the fact that he was somehow involved in African-American political causes, was allied with the Nation of Islam, and had been assassinated in 1965.

What I knew accounted for virtually nothing.

There has been discussion of Malcolm X coming out on Blu-ray -- the film doesn't make it in standard def -- and after it was put off, I began to wonder if it would ever arrive.

All I can say is that I'm thrilled to finally be able to place it into a Blu-ray player.  And when you do that, the magic of this film begins.  I don't recall ever seeing a Spike Lee Joint that was impressive in some way.  But within the technical structure of this film, it is his use of color -- astoundingly beautiful color -- that does not permit the viewer to look away.  The color and textures of the zoot suits worn in the film are electric and amazing.

Malcolm X is a superb film, a great entertainment, a wonderful lesson in history, and finally, an incredibly produced Blu-ray disc from WB.

Perfect.

Highly Recommended.

I think it's a good but flawed film - Lee can't stop himself from editorializing at times, and some elements date it badly.

But it's still very effective, and Denzel Washington has never been better,  I still can't believe that Pacino won the Oscar for his "Scent of a Woman" hamminess and Washington got bupkus! thumbsdown.gif

I think it's a great film with one of the best acting performances captured on film.

Great film. Important film. And I'm very excited to add it to my blu-ray collection.
