Red Tails - quick review

George Lucas produced "Red Tails", a film about the Tuskegee Airmen who broke down racial barrier in WWII and demonstrated that dogfighting in the sky wasn't something only white pilots could do well in combat.

The direction of this film was tame, or uninspired. The script is a little flabby in spots, as there are many pilot characters in the film, and it was a little difficult keeping up with the various subplots for the main characters, and the screenwriting wasn't engaging, felt disjointed, threadbare in characterizations, and lacked confidence and bite. It felt like the first draft of a screenplay in many scenes, and didn't really flow well. The actors did the best they could with a weak script.

The aerial scenes were fine, as it is its main marketing point in its advertising.

I give it 2 stars, or a grade of C.

I really liked Red Tails. Its an old fashioned style war movie, the kind they used to make during the war. Its bigger than life, and very patriotic. This isn't Saving Private Ryan in the air, Its the Flying Tigers. Someone else said it better than me, "they finally got the John Wayne treatment!"

Its beautifully photographed with the Sony CineAlta F35, and Canon 5d and 7d cameras. I thought the acting was perfectly appropriate for the style of film they were making. The effects are flawless. I enjoyed the story. I'd give it 4 out of 5 stars.

Also I got to see it at a screening with some of the real original Tuskegee Airmen. it was quite an event.

Very old fashioned war film.   I thought it was better than I expected.   I read most of the reviews which seemed to imply "this is terrible" and so my expectations were low.

Frankly, I found it good fun, decent history, and a throw back to the old school rah-rah heroes kind of films I remember.. I enjoyed it a good deal.

A solid "B" using Patrick's system.
