Is this still a viable sub?

Paradigm PS 1000

Mine is about 10 years old, but has not been used in at least 5 years. ( Put it away as I was afraid my kids would destroy it, and because it literally shook my room to the point where the ceiling tiles would move. )

It kicked butt THEN, but don't know how it stacks up against a new sub in the $500 range.

I hope to set it up real soon and see if it still works, but right now I don't have anything but the sub and rcvr for the new media room. ( Being built now ).

A quick look at the specs and yes it can easily be outperformed for your $500 budget. http://www.lavasubs.com/12_inch/powered_home_subwoofer.html is under $300 with the HTF discount and has much better specs. And so I don't disappoint some people, a $500 DIY sub is a step up to the next level. You can match the quality and output of subs costing thousands.
