Building a complete Home theatre Room

Hi,
Im New to this whole home theatre scene and just needed some guidance so that i dont get taken for a ride. My budget for speakers is around 2000 - 3000 dollars and for a project around the same. I dont think I'm getting a 3d projector so HD should be good enough. As for the lighting and the acoustics, I'm hiring a professional to design and set the acoustics. I want to know what speakers and projector should I get that would be in tune with the price I stated.
I was quoted Infinity Surround Sound 7.1 with ONKYA for 2500 dollars
JBL 7.1 with DENON for 1500 dollars.
and i think the projector was a Panasonic HD.
And also there were 2 types of screens a original one and a china one. There is a significant price difference.

So what do you guys think what should i get?

I like the Panasonic AE series. I use a DIY screen that cost $75 and looks just as good as the $1,000 one I looked at in the store.

Is your budget for speakers AND a receiver? Which receiver models were recommended with each option you were quoted?

Why? Dolby Labs has a standard speaker setup diagram. Other than putting a few absorption panels on the walls, what will a "pro" do for you?

Well the pro that I'm hiring will set the normal acoustics but he is designing the entire room as well.. It's not a simple couch and wall type of scenario, It will be designed to look different from what we usually see. The speakers will be embedded in the walls and the ground will have couple of levels for seating. Then we have floor lightings and all those accessories. The ceiling is a different issue.
As for your second question: The budget is infact for a speaker plus a reciever. I think its the Infinity speakers with ONKYA receiver and the Denon with the JBL.
As for the screen, you're saying that the quality doesn't differ much?
Panasonic AE for the projector seems about right.

With your budget for projector, you have numerous choices. Before deciding on one, you need to view the different technologies and see which you prefer(LCD, DLP, LCos). And your choice will depend on your ceiling height, and whether you ceiling mount it or use a rear shelf.

I dont remember the ceiling height ill get you that as soon as possible... The projector will definitely be ceiling mounted because there'll be no shelf at the back. I'll look into the technologies. Also would it be preferable to get a 7.1 surround or 5.1 surround? any particular difference?

If your room will accomodate it, I would go with a 7.1 system. Your "acoustics professional" should be able to tell you that. That's why you're paying him right?

I know he should be able to tell me. Im here to get a second opinion....

It's hard to say without seeing the room. BUT for a 7.1 system, you need a minimum of 3-4' between your seating and rear speakers. If you don't have that room, go with a 5.1 system

If its only 3-4' then i guess I have plenty of room... I should be going for a 7.1 biggrin.gif ... can you guys please recommend some speakers?

I would recommend starting out looking at Axiom speakers. You should be able to get 7 + a sub within your budget.

I have the M3s in my living room viewing area, and they sound fantastic.

There's about 10 "recommend me some speakers" threads going on in the Speakers and Subwoofers section.

That's like asking in a car forum "which car should I buy?" In the speaker section, give your budget, size of room, intended uses, etc.

I already mention my budget in my first comment. Its 2-3000 dollars including the receiver. The intended use of the room is strictly a home theatre and it will completely designed as such. The size of the room im not sure but its a relatively large room, the recommended screen size is about 170 inches with a ceiling fixed projector. It has 3 rows of seating with wooden elevations for different rows. (it will be carpeted)

Troy sutton: those speakers look awesome! especially those epic grandmaster 500's... The reviews were pretty good too.. lets see if i get them smile.gif

Do you intend to have a 170" diagonal screen? If so, you're going to need a VERY bright projector. There's no way the Pan. AE series are bright enough. What will your seating distance, throw distance and screen size be?

yes its a diagonal 170 inch... I think my throw distance is around 15-20ft.. unsure about it though ill check .. seating maybe 12-17 ft..
170" diagonal is too big for that seating distance. Who recommended a 170" diagonal screen to you? Do you realize that screen size would be 6'-11" X 12'-4" or 83" X 148" ?

I sit approximately 13 feet from a 103", 16x9 screen. I used a calculator at one of the projector sellers to determine the viewing angle. Anything larger for my viewing distance and I would have had to turn my head back and forth to see the entire screen comfortably.

People Im sorry .. i got the size of the room completely wrong.. the size is approximately 35 by 27... a little bit bigger than i thought tongue.gif hahah...
The size of the room is irrelevant as far as the screen size. Screen size is determined by your seating distance, and of course on the size of your screen wall.

the size as i mentioned is definitely 170 inches... seating distance should be 25 -30 ft..
The seating distance went from 12' - 17' to 25' - 30' ? Is the throw distance still 15' - 20' ? You have very few projector options due to that huge screen size and budget. How many rows of seats? I recommend you move the seating closer to screen, and use a smaller screen. That will give you many more projector options. Do you know what model the Panasonic projector was that the dealer recommended?
