According to Movies Unlimited it's here at last. Pressed discs from Sony!

Movies Unlimited description - which may turn out to be Sony's own description - is as follows:

QUOTE:

First, in My Name Is Julia Ross (1945), Nina Foch is an unemployed secretary whose quest for work leads her to a wealthy widow. After getting hired to help the woman, she is thrust into a strange world of murder and mistaken identity. With Dame May Whitty, George Macready. Next, Broderick Crawford is a New Orleans police detective who goes undercover to stop The Mob (1951). Betty Buehler, Richard Kiley, Ernest Borgnine co-star. A cast-against-type Ginger Rogers shines as an uncooperative witness in a criminal case whose association with gangsters puts her in a Tight Spot (1955). With Edward G. Robinson, Brian Keith. Then, a shot-in-Philadelphia adaptation of David Goodis' The Burglar (1957) has jewel thief Dan Duryea planning one final heist with the help of accomplices Jayne Mansfield, Mickey Shaughnessy, and Peter Capell. Lastly, in Drive A Crooked Road (1964), Mickey Rooney is a race car enthusiast who is blackmailed into driving the getaway car during a bank robbery. Dianne Foster, Kevin McCarthy co-star. 7 hrs. total on five discs. Standard/Widescreen; Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital stereo.

UNQUOTE.

So far, other Internet traders like Amazon have nothing about this box-set. Movies Unlimited quote a price of $44.95.

Great news!  Loved the first two sets.

I pre-ordered pretty early, in late November, I think - so hopefully the actual shipping is imminent.

For those unaware, this is a TCM exclusive boxset, so only Movies Unimited and TCMshop.com will be carrying it.

SON OF A BITCH!  I'm going to get charged to the nuts since I'm in Canada. Looks like I'll be getting these films from other sources. Shame. The other volumes have been easily available from amazon.ca at fair pricing.

And the studios wonder why sales are down?

I didn't place my order at TCM shop until 12/30. My order status currently says back-ordered with a ship date of 1/25. Oh well :)

I was unaware so thank you. Why have Sony gone this route when the previous sets were available from the usual Internet traders?

I think the basic answer to your question is simply that was then, this is now. By partnering with TCM, Sony has some guarantees regarding return on investment as well as the attendant inventory issues. Short of boutique labels, there are almost no big studio deep catalog offerings these days that don't fall under some sort of exclusive program. At least these discs are pressed.

The release date is not until January 25.  TCM and Movies Unlimited indicate all pre-orders as back-ordered until the release date.  Your not really back-ordered, your just in the holding pattern until release date, the same with me.

Interesting. I just assumed it was the 16th. That's what the listing for it on TCM Shop says.

Movies Unlimited said Januray 25th and I just checked TCM site and it also says ships Jan 25th.  Perhaps the date changed.

Yeah who knows. I'll just be glad whenever I do get it!

It's still listed as backorderd. I got this e-mail today:
Quote:
Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you for your recent order with the TCM Shop. We appreciate your business.

Due to a production error on the packaging of the Film Noir Classics III (DVD), we are forced to delay the release date of this set until Feb. 14, 2012. We apologize for this delay, but we are doing this to ensure it arrives at the highest quality and meets our standards for the Vault Collection line. I got an email yesterday saying that the title had shipped and after reading your post, I went back to the email and checked the tracking numbers and lo and behold it is scheduled for delivery tomorrow.  I did order through Movies Unlimited site and not the TCM site, but I think they are one of the same.

I wonder what is wrong with the packaging?  Of course if the packaging is the same one Columbia uses with locking the discs in place over each other, then there is something wrong with it.smile.gif

Err, Movies Unlimited shipped mine yesterday. I really hope there's not a major defect on this set.

Mine shipped yesterday, too.

On mine as well.

Mine shipped on the 26th . Was supposed to be delivered today . But now the tracking claims it's at my local PO and will be delivered on Monday .
Just to follow up , I did receive my set on Saturday after all . Have not had a chance to check it out yet . Will today at some point .
Got mine too and there's nothing really wrong with the packaging, outside of the usual "stacking" digipack design and a small crack from the cheap-o shipping envelope (*shakes fist). I'll be watching some of these today to see if they got the wrong movies labeled or something.
Watched them all along with the extras. Detected no problems.

Edit: actually, there is a small goof in the TCM article bonus feature that accidentally repeats a line on the previous page (when talking about The Burglar). Perhaps this is what they are fixing.

Update #2: Okay, I don't know why I didn't notice before, but halfway through the description of The Mob on the back of the slipcase, it starts the description of The Burglar. This is most likely the cause of the delay. Thankfully, this is hardly a dealbreaker for me.

You are so right.  I want to keep mine (collector's editon).  When I opened the package two discs were loose due to the horrible way the discs are stored, but no damage to either disc.

Mine arrived a couple of days ago in the usual package - when I opened it, the disc for DRIVE A CROOKED ROAD was missing! First time that has happened in a set like this. Oh, well, Movies Unlimited said they would send me the missing disc.
Mine's OK, phew!

Movies Unlimited recently sent an email confirming that the replacement is due to the wrong discription on the slipcover:
Quote:
Dear Movie Lover,

Recently you ordered and may have received by now "The Columbia Pictures Film Noir Collection, Volume III".

Due to a production error on the outer packaging of the Film Noir III set, the description for THE MOB on the back cover of the slipcase is incorrect. This will be corrected in a new printing of the slipcase. If you wish a replacement for this slipcase with the corrected information, please notify us by replying to this email, and we will send you one at no cost.

Please note this only affects the slipcase and the discs inside are fine and unaffected. There is no reason to send back the item for replacement.

Thank you, and we appreciate your support of the TCM Vault Collection.

Sincerely,

Customer Service Department

It looks like they will just send the slipcover free of charge, probably unfolded. As it says, anyone interested should just reply to this email.

I have enjoyed the films with MY NAME IS JULIA ROSS being a real surprise.  I have never seen the film, but it certainly grabbed me and had me spellbound the entire 68 minutes.  THE MOB is the title that I want the most out of the group and it meet expectations.  But THE BURGLAR is a jewel.  Dan Duryea and the lovely Jayne Mansfield do a great job.

It appears to me that with the Martin Scorsese introductions on two of the films, that Sony had full intentions of releasing them through the mass market and not just TCM/Movies Unlimited.

The transfers are top notch and they are pressed DVDs..

I agree, I found them all very satisfying as well as unique. The Mob was the only one that seemed routine in its premise (cops vs crooks), but was very fun to watch thanks to the dialogue and overall set-up. Gotta love that brief Charles Bronson bit part. I'll also echo that The Burglar is a real standout with some outstanding cinematography. Interesting to here how this one was a low-budget indie that was auctioned off to Columbia due to Jayne Mansfield's sudden stardom--it certainly did no favors to the generally underrated Dan Duryea to be held off for 2 years. Also glad for the off-beat Tight Spot finally getting released after it seemed to get released everywhere else but in North America.
I'm still waiting for mine, haven't even gotten a shipping notification yet. What are the extras?

I've seen all these films except TIGHT SPOT and am a fan of all of them. Glad to see THE BURGLAR is getting some love, it's easily my favorite of the four I've seen.

Well, what do you know, I lifted up my copy of THE MOB to give it a look and there, bigger than life, was DRIVE A CROOKED ROAD underneath - apparently they had both gotten stacked in the same slot. They both play just fine so now I can quit worrying about it and enjoy the collection.
