Any Chaplin movies coming in 2012?

I have to ask because I honestly have not heard anything. I got Modern Times from Criterion and plan on grabbing Great Dictator on the next sale, but I'm really hoping we'll get City Lights and/or Gold Rush on blu before too much longer. Has anyone heard anything about potential releases?

Wasn't one of the cartoon clues on the Crfiterion newsletter a few months back suggesting The Gold Rush?

I honestly don't know, first I've heard that Criterion even had a newsletter.

The Gold Rush is definitely coming this year. Probably early summer.

Aren't the Criterion Blu-rays of Chaplin's films sourced from PAL transfers with the 4% conversion speed-up?

I want to buy them, but this is the reason I've hesitated.

I didn't get any sense of PAL speed up on the two Criterion Chaplins that I've reviewed, but maybe I'm not sensitive to it.

The Warner/MK2 DVDs that were released in the U.S. a few years ago have this problem. It's not an issue on the Blu-Ray discs.

To my eye, the Criterion Blu look much better then the Warners discs, as to be expected. On the Great Dictator especially. On the warner DVD some of the backgrounds, most noticeably during the famous globe ballet, would break up into visual noise from the speed up. never a problem on the Criterion. I'm happy to upgrade all of the titles they decide to release.  And the extras have been great too. :)

Excellent! Although I must confess a bit of disappointment, given I was hoping for City Lights next. Maybe next year, either it or The Kid are the only major Chaplin flicks left to get out,

In addition to The Gold Rush, City Lights and The Kid, Criterion will also be releasing The Circus, A Woman of Paris, Monsieur Verdoux, Limelight, A King of New York, and a handful of his short films. One hopes they'll pick up the pace eventually since they have so many to get to.

I'll take all of the above for $1000, Alex.

Wish Criterion could get the rights to the entire Chaplin film library. Can you imagine what they could do with it?

Not necessary for once. They Keystone restorations were mastered in HD, despite the Flicker Alley and BFI sets being DVD-only for now. There is a project underway for the 12 Mutual shorts, too.

I get ya, young Padawan must learn patience. I just wish they were all being released under one "roof" sort of speak and given Criterion is the gold standard for extras and quality, it would seem to fit the bill. Ah well.

So sit tight and wait for the Keystones on blu or bite? :)
