The only features are "Rockin In the Rockies" and "Have Rocket - Will Travel". Sadly "Time Out For Rythm" was omitted, the others are just cameos.

I am very excited about this set. One concern always with these "complete" packages, is that the packaging with be impractical for regular use. This set preserves the individual set packaging and looks perfect. Now, I just have to get the already released four movies.

Which strikes me as the strangest part about this.... if they are going to the trouble to release such a massive collection with 85% already released material spread over 20 discs, why not just finish it off and re-release the other 4 movies in the same set.

It would probably get a better reception from people that already bought the remastered 8 volumes of the Three Stooges Collection.

That being said, I will only buy the new 3 DVDs if released separately.

I will not repurchase the other 17 DVDs just to get the 3 new ones. Sony...where is an official press release already?

If NOT GUILTY ENOUGH really is omitted, that doesn't make any sense. Other Shemp/Clyde entries like MONEY SQUAWKS and BOOBS IN THE WOODS are listed. CUCKOORANCHO missing from the set would be a lesser disappointment. At this point the press release is way overdue.

The negative reviews are streaming in, like this one at Amazon:

Thanks for screwing the fans once again. Hopefully you will rectify this by releasing the bonus DVD separately. If not, I hope everyone who purchased the individual sets uses torrents to download the bonus content. You crooks deserve it.

also i know its a different company, but going back a few years or so when New Line (WB) was releasing the EE of LOTR the offered an option to for like $5 to send off for just the large slipcase, wonder if the do release the 9th volume as a standalone if the would make a similar offer via their website?

There have been a few times when I wished you could get a slipcase later, as they did with LOTR.  As long as it's the good sturdy constructed kind.  I'd be happy to pay a few bucks for that.

I few years ago I think it was Palm was putting out dvds called "The Works Of" featuring music vids and shorst from directors like Spike Jonez. Later on they collected the 3 DVDs into a boxset with a bonus DVD and a poster. If you bought the discs previously you just had to send them an email and they sent you the box, poster and CD for free. they shipped to me in Canada too.

There's no reason Sony couldn't do that. We paid more for the separate sets, we deserve the bonus set.

It's nice to see that, if Sony does release the bonus features as a stand alone, people are thinking ahead about making sure that they can continue to complain.

Not a complaint. If a small no name studio like Palm can support the people who supported the product there is ABSOLUTELY NO REASON THE MEGA CORPS CAN'T.

I'll buy the bonus discs if they are priced the same as the previous sets, I'm just pointing out a similar situation and how it was handled.

So maybe check the colours you're using before you decide to paint someone with your asshole brush...

I don't get it - not putting NOT GUILT ENOUGH and CUCKOORANCHO but putting 3 Bonus cartoons as extras makes no sense unless there's an issue with elements. The could have done an extra segment with the 7 minutes of Stooge scenes from "Captain Hates The Sea" and "Start Cheering".

I expect we'll see "Time Out for Rhythm" as a MOD title as we have with other Ann Miller titles

That's the same thing I was thinking -- maybe those two shorts have gone the way of Hello Pop and Jail Birds Of Paradise? (I hope not though.)

Speaking of which -- many years ago, before I ever saw the Stooges' M-G-M shorts, I remember in Moe Howard's autobiography he had one or more still photos of the Stooges in an airplane, identified as being from Plane Nuts. When I eventually saw Plane Nuts, I was surprised to discover that apart from the reused musical number from an earlier M-G-M feature film, the short has nothing to do with aviation whatsoever. But much to my delight, it does preserve their vaudeville act of the time on film. It almost seems as if they were going to film, or did film, an airplane-related short, and for whatever reason, it was scrapped at the last minute and someone decided they could qucikly, cheaply and easily crank out a new replacement short by going on a stage and just filming their live act. In the Lenburg/Maurer/Lenburg book The Three Stooges Scrapbook, one illustration shows a few frames of film with the Stooges in an airplane, and it's captioned as a nitrate film clip of a deleted scene. I have also seen references to a working title, Around The World Backwards, and a quote from Larry Fine someplace where he said the first short the Stooges filmed at M-G-M was "so bad they burned it up without releasing it."

I wonder what the deal is there, and where those few frames of film in the Scrapbook came from.

Speaking of which (continuing my little digression here) -- why isn't the Stooges' 1960 TV pilot Three Stooges Scrapbook included along with these extras -- for that matter, it would have made a great (and appropriate) bonus feature on The Three Stooges In Orbit DVD. (Maybe they're saving that for another box set of the 1960s feature films?)

The Stooges' appearances in various Screen Snapshots shorts would be nice to have too someday. IIRC, there's even one where they appear with Ted Healy.

THE THREE STOOGES SCRAPBOOK (1960) is not a Sony property. It was an independent pilot film by Normandy Productions; if it has an active copyright, it is owned by C3.

The color version of the pilot was distributed to theaters in September 1963 as two short subjects: 14 minute two-reeler with the apartment-hunting and Creepy Manor segments, and a 10-minute one-reeler showcasing the cartoon.

I beleive this was distributed by Columbia smile.gif

Key word... distributed.

No rights to THE THREE STOOGES SCRAPBOOK (1960) were assigned to, or acquired by, Columbia. Normandy Productions owned the film, and made a business arrangement with Columbia to have it (i.e., the 2 recut short subjects) distributed on some matinee bookings in September 1963.

Still no press release? Amazon still has June 5th as the release date, so is this the official date now? If so, I can understand the delay in the press release. confused.gif

You know I have been trying to gather more information on

this release for you guys.

Just went to the Sony press site.  The collection is no longer

listed in their database.

I am not making any speculations as to what this means but

perhaps part of the reason why a press announcement has yet

to be made.

Thanks for continuing to check the status on this.
I have always been more of a Laurel and Hardy fan, but I do enjoy the Stooges, and will buy this as soon as its released.

FWIW, someone posted this comment on Amazon the other day:  "I know the people at Sony Home Video and they are considering a solo release of the bonus disc, but nothing official has been said."

Sony's home video marketing hasn't exactly been on the ball lately, like with The Caine Mutiny showing up for pre-order a week before release, so it is still possible the set is still slated for March 27. Also, Amazon still hasn't fixed its list price since there is no way that Sony is going to sell 20 discs at a list price of 99.95.

Sony's site still still has the collection up for March 27

Maybe this all has to do with the death of Pete Rugolo?

In hindsight, perhaps I shouldn't have opened my

big mouth.

I am almost certain that the removal of the title

from Sony's press site means absolutely nothing.

My Good People of Moronica!

I just joined this site/message board to let you know that I have written Sony's consumer relations to ask if the bonus three disc set "Rare Treasures from the Columbia Pictures Vault" will be released separately. It would definitely be bullshit (though I will not be surprised) if they do not release the three disc set separately so all loyal consumers who already have purchased the first 8 volumes at full retail price, will not have to re-purchase the 8 volumes they already have.

I'll let you all know if I hear anything back. I provided a link to this message board to show them that many consumers are already concerned about being cheated, and some are willing to boycott future Sony releases, me included. I'm a gigantic three stooges fan... I have well over 50 Three Stooges related DVDs (all that has been available on the market so far in the past 10 years), documentaries, countless books, Moe's autobiography (A GREAT READ) and even Larry's hard to find "Stroke of Luck"... and I have all six stooges (Moe, Larry, Curly, Shemp, Joe Besser, Curly Joe DeRita) hand signed authentic autographs... my "avatar" is of my Curly Howard autograph in pencil... he signed "Best Wishes" and "3 Stooges" which is awesome, since he usually just signed simply "Curly" though I would like to find one some day where he signed "Curly Howard" or the very rare "Jerry Curly Howard"... anyways... off topic... point is, I want to own ALL available Stooges films, cameo/tv appearances, etc.... especially films not before available... I already have all Shemp solo shorts ("Mr. Noisy" is classic Shemp), as well as DeRita's, and Besser's on bootleg DVDs...but it would be nice to own them on an official release with probably better quality transfer which is what I read the new 3 disc set will include, along with the never released on DVD "Have Rocket, Will Travel" of which I have an original movie poster of, really cool art...

I told them if they don't plan a separate wide market release of the new three disc set, the least they could do and OWE us is a limited release/internet only order, where the set is offered exclusively through their site for a certain amount of time. I'd be happy with that and I'm sure most hardcore real die-hard stooge fans would not mind paying $25-$30 for the set through their site... I also provided them links to reviews on Amazon where people are already pissed off and giving the set negatives reviews based on their fair assumption that the bonus discs will not be made available separately. Over the years, I have seen many other instances where a year or so after all individual sets of said show, etc. have been released, a "complete series" set is released with Bonus content that is not made available separately... it's common practice. In one instance, the first three seasons of a show were released as individual sets... then a complete series box set was released where the 4th and final season could only be obtained. It was NEVER released separately by the company. Fan outrage was rampant online. Fortunately, the company was bought out by another, and the 4th/final season was finally made available by the new company, but not till about two years after the release of the "complete series"... I'm afraid, truth of it is, the companies really don't give a shit about consumer loyalty, etc. They hope diehard fans will suck it up, breakdown and just re-purchase what they already have... and I don't think they care much about those who don't... so I'm not holding my breath... but we'll see and I'll let you all know if and what I hear back...

If you want to write them and voice your thoughts, here is the email: consumer@SPHECustomerSupport.sony.com ... I would think the more emails they get regarding this, hopefully the more likely we'll get our desired result... if not, then NYUK SONY!!! I encourage you to write them!!!

Take Care & Moronica for Morons!

Don't settle for some internet only set. They should get the darn extras set in Walmart so we can go buy it! Not some overpriced web exclusive. This idea has the same effect as saying "Niagra Falls...!" slllllooooooowly I tuuuuuurnn....

NOTE TO SONY: I'd also like to take the opportunity to go off topic and mention that Sony can feel free to nix the splash screens that negatively effect my viewing experience of my nostalgic favorites like the Stooges, Seinfeld, etc. They're like finger pokes in both eyes (the 2 handed kind Moe is famous for). Please place them away from the actual episodes of TV shows. It would be better if it appeared just before the menu after first inserting the dvd. I'm usually in the other room getting my snacks, sodas and good-n-plentys as the menus are loading anyway.

I was just joking about Pete Rugolo. Actually, it must have something to do with their relationship with Greeneway Productions. However, my best guess would be that Sony originally did not plan to release a separate set of extras and they are trying to figure out what to do in response to all the internet griping over the fear that the extras won't be released separately. I think they ought to do some kind of release to be fair to the loyal purchasers, but as this thread shows, no matter what they do, some people will find a way to complain. Personally, I am really looking forward to this set, although I would like to know for sure whether I need to search out the previously released 1960s Columbia films I don't have.

Have some new information for all of you from

a source...

The new set of “rare” materials will, indeed, be released

on its own at some point.   Not sure when, but it will be

later, it is believed, than the big box set.

I have been asked to point all of you to Sony's Facebook

and Twitter page which will continue to keep fans posted

with the latest information on Three Stooges releases.

Let me also add this...

The studio is very much in tune with the fans.

They love The Three Stooges properties they own

and have tried very hard to please the fanbase.

If you don't see particular shorts or clips in any

upcoming boxed sets, rarities or otherwise that

the studio releases --- then presume the studio

does not have that material available to them.
