Justified - Season 3 (FX) - Page 2

Just when I think that this cannot be even more awesomer(sp???), we get an episode like this one. Pruitt Tyler Vance is just some more kind of villain. "You let him shoot me!" Just plumb tickled with this week's ep. I have never felt good about Devil and that feeling now seems justified.

Great to see Johnny back.

"Arlo your old, that is the only reason your not gettin' one of these." biggrin.gif

Such great stuff. I do believe that Wynn is just a bit afraid of Quarles. Can't wait to see how all the players will choose sides in the coming fight. cause you know there is going to be a big one.

Just one minor complaint, really missed Art.

What an incredible episode.  Probably my favorite of the series.

"...Technically, you rolled over me, and then I backed into you."

Boyd "helping" Devil with the pain. Yikes. That was a pretty chilling ending. Haven't seen that side of Boyd in a while. Devil sure had it coming, though. For a second, I was telling myself, "There's no way Boyd's brother is gonna just go with this." And then he didn't. And I was like, "...Well, duh."

I'm itchin' for the first Goggins/McDonough face-off. Gotta be soon.

Lots of stuff going all over the place, but it feels like it's setting up what looks like a hands-down-incredible episode next week. And it was still awesome. I feel like with this many villains, they're abandoning the "one-main-villain-per-season" approach. I can possibly see Limehouse living throughout the season. Either him, or McDonough's character. Not Dickie, though.

Also, there's a possibility I could watch an entire episode of nothing but Dewey rolling around in a body bag.

Dewey in a body bag. Dewey trying to outrun that dude and getting tackled. Dewey hungry. Dewey taped to the chair dreading another injection. The first Dewey injection. And, next week? MORE DEWEY!!!

Greatest secondary character ever.

They have to find a way to keep Dewey alive.  He's too priceless as comic relief to off.

So next week is effectively "CRANK 3, STARRING DEWEY CROWE" in Harlan County, KY?

Sounds great to me.

I laughed out loud at the slapstick of Dewey trying to run away at the truck stop, and the sound he made when the guy tackled him. Also loved the guy with broken bones blindly firing his weapon, even though he couldn't make his body point the gun right at Raylan.

I knew Devil had picked the wrong person to trust, but was I the only one shocked at how far Boyd let that play out? He basically bet everything that Devil wouldn't pull the trigger right away, and would allow him to say some final words. How did Boyd's brother not pull his gun the instant that Devil pulled on Boyd?

Ultimately, it was all done for dramatic effect, and I probably shouldn't be throwing too much logic at it, but it stood out to me at the time.

Son of a bitch, I can't get enough of this show. Everyone is great in it. The fucking crickets are great in it.
Yeah, Dewey should never be killed off, he is just too much to lose. "He wants you to know he's hard, he just hasn't figured it out yet."

Boyd knew Devil wasn't gonna shoot right away because Devil wanted to make sure Boyd knew who had the power. Dramatic effect is also a huge reason.

This show is great and the casting is outstanding.

I love the conversations between Raylan and Boyd, they both know everything and they just stay right below that line. When Boyd was told Dickie escaped his eyes light up and he shows controlled jubilation.

Little nitpick; it bugged me that everyone was talking about UP in Tennessee.

Yeah -- in fact, my first thought was that Boyd or his cousin had somehow managed to tamper with his gun, or slip him some duds, or something. For some reason, here I was thinking this whole time that Johnny was Boyd's brother, when in fact he's actually his cousin.

Boyd doesn't have any immediate family left at all, does he? I'm probably just forgetting, but do we know anything about his mom, or where she is right now? I always just assumed Boyd sprang straight out of his father's skull like some sort of hillbilly Athena.

Interestingly, the Boyd character has become increasingly theatrical as the show's gone on. Not only does he favor complicated triple-cross planning, but he's taken to monologuing and really milking the pauses and dramatic turns-of-phrase he comes up with. It would be irritating if Goggins wasn't so...well, Goggins-ish with it all.

As far as his triple-planning goes -- right now, the character is pretty much at the height of his powers. He went from being an ex-vet, bank-robbing Neo-Nazi genius, to a backwoods Christian vigilante, to a reformed man who gets dragged unwillingly back into a life of crime (by people he triple-crosses), to an out-and-out rising crime-lord.

Certainly one of the strangest characters on TV, but I got no complaints, save one: his hair needs to return to last season's grand weirdness. Though, in the meantime, Dickie's got the fucked-up hair covered, and then some.

(Actually, in the last episode or two, Boyd's hair stood out to me as looking like it was colored with shoe polish. It reminded me of the It's Always Sunny... episode where Dennis found a grey hair, and dyed his whole head jet-black.)

Hillbilly Athena!!! LOL. It fits. I also thought Johnny was his brother for some reason. If Goggins wasn't the actor, I don't know how great of a character Boyd would be. I never noticed his hair.

If I had one complaint about the show, that would be it - it seems Boyd went from being a run-of-the-mill below average intelligence hill-billy criminal to being a borderline criminal mastermind.  Ironically, it's not that far off from the magical transformation his Shane character went through on 'The Shield' (which I had a problem with as well).

How can you have a problem with that when in reality any law enforcement officer involved with as many shootings as Givens, would be reassigned today for desk duty or something else.  The guy has killed so many people in the line of duty, it's like he's a member of Murder Inc.  Therefore, you have some misgivings about the transformation of one character, but you're ignoring a more obvious flaw with the series. I take the series for what it is which is great television entertainment and a far cry from reality in both crime and law enforcement.

I think Horatio on CSI: Miami has killed more and he isn't even supposed to be a street cop, just a lab boss.

I think I'm more of a "character development" kind of guy and those things stick out to me more than story line embellishments would.  It's really not a big deal though...I agree with your last statement.

What was Duffy's line? "You can't paint over blood." If I was Wynn Duffy, I would be fleeing right about now. Favorite episode of the season so far.

Love where things are going, especially that Quarles is indeed going after Raylan by means other than the obvious one of trying to kill him. Also love Boyd getting a new long-game going, with Jim Beaver to boot. Interesting seeing him put on the defensive. Last, but certainly not least, this exchange:

"I got mad ninja-skillz, buddy."
"You know karate?"
"Yeah, and two other Japanese words."

Never enough Tim, but at least when we get him, it's like that.

So Gary's definitely the corpse in the preview for next week, right?

Also, Quarles' name is no longer "Quarles." He shall henceforth go forward from now on as, "That buck-toothed, albino son-of-a-bitch."

I'm going to call Neal McDonough that if I ever see him. If you ever read about a guy being found beaten to death in McDonough's apartment, you'll know why I haven't been posting.
Did Raylan say "buck-toothed" or "big-toothed'? McDonough does have some large teeth. LOL at Raylan throwing the cousin out the door and out of his chair.

This show is just so smooth.

"Last time I checked, you were a US Marshall too."

Also, I don't know what it is but I love the way Boyd walks when he has his hands in his jacket like he did when he left Limehouse's place. IDK, just wouldn't want to F with that guy.

Duffy always looks tenative when he is around Quarles,

That's because Quarles has something up his sleeve.

Just a heads-up guys -- there's been some REALLY spoilery casting-news hitting sites like Deadline in the last few hours or so. So, if you don't want to be spoiled about a character who is probably off the show, I'd be careful about which sites you go to for a while.

Speaking of Wynn Duffy:

Between Stephen Tobolowsky and Jim Beaver this week alone, Justified is now way, way ahead in the "shows-featuring-old-Deadwood-actors" sweepstakes. It makes this show just that much more badass.

I stand prepared to shit my whole mind if the living-titan Ian McShane ever strides into Harlan. Head of the Dixie Mafia, maybe?

Sadly, Tobolowsky didn't do his utterly-insane "baby bird" impression from Deadwood, but it's always good to see him pop 'round in the role that Deadwood cemented for him...that of the cockblocking authority figure.

I like that Ava is apparently carrying around Arlo's meds in her bra. Third-best thing in there.

I think Gerald McRaney would be a better fit than McShane for Justified.

We love Justified, and are always shocked when the show ends so fast. That hour just zooms by.

Sorry, off topic for the TV series, but I just bought a three-books-in-one volume of Elmore Leonard's Raylan Givens novels and a newer one based more on the TV Raylan than Leonard's original vision of him for my kindle.

Great news for Justified fans as it's been renewed for a fourth season.

Last night ep was great, the screws were really put to Raylan. It's such a wonderful mess with the three criminal factions and Raylan in the middle.
Glad Raylan survived that onslaught! Now, it's time for Raylan to bite back. Looks like he might have an ally in Wynn Duffy of all people.

"That is so cool!!! Did you make that up on the spot?" "Nah. Somethin' I got from the Tonight Show". I don't know what Tonight Show ep would have had a 'next one's comin' faster' line, but that was hilarious.

"Well, if you like, I could tell you what I remember about yo' momma."

Whoa...that cut Raylan deep. I could swear they did some SFX work on his eyes when Limehouse spoke that line. Goddamn, this show is so great. And you know what? Even though Mags was fantastic, this season is better than the last one. Easily, in my opinion.

(When is Olyphant's ridiculously-good work going to get some fricking recognition?)

Also, I'm in the "hope-Wynn-Duffy-stays-around" camp -- between this, and his work on Breaking Bad, it's a good time to be Jere Burns.

In other news, between Ava's motherly-streak and Boyd's love of music and literature, they'd be incredible parents if they weren't doing what they're currently doing.

And I love how the upcoming season finale is called "Slaughterhouse," because you know it will be.

I was just talking to someone about this.  While this season has been great, I don't know if I'd put it on the level of season 2.  That was one of the best seasons of television I've seen.  Quarles is good...but he's no Mags.

Ditto. Having said that, this season is still better than 90% of the rest of the TV programming out there. (IMHO)

Holy shit, McDonough. This episode was one long Emmy submission-reel.

I may be biased, but I kind of want him to survive this. I know he won't (Darabont's already cast him as one of the leads in his new show next season), but I also don't want to lose him. The stand-off at the bar and the scene with the male prostitute were fucking phenomenal. Mad Men and GoT have their work cut out for them if they're to unseat Justified as best show this season.

(Oh, and Limehouse getting in some knife-wiping aggression.)

Courtroom scene was made even better by watching Art squirm as Raylan just got worse and worse.

"Did that go how you practiced it?"
Awesome ep. In the bar I kept expecting the ol' gun on a drawer slide to come popping out. Even if it did, you know that Raylan would have the quicker shot, we've seen it before. (Plus he had lots of practice in Deadwood ;-)
I'm probably in the minority judging from most blogs/forums...but, I didn't care for this episode. Sure, McDonough was awesome and he got to show off his chops...but, what did those scenes accomplish in the long run? They showed us Quarles is a sick, evil bastard? Check. Knew it. That Wynn is made terribly uncomfortable by all this? Check. Knew it. That Raylan and Quarles can go toe-to-toe in a macho-off? Check. Figured they could.

The only thing that happened in this episode was that the election was held and Boyd tricked his way to the top. And, that was downplayed!

Last week was a 'quiet before the storm, moving the pieces on the board' episode...and this week...the same, only less moving. Bleh. I would have preferred a fun one-off story with some of the extra stuff in between that story going on. This ended up being a pure serial episode that moved forward an inch at most.

I'm hoping next week gets moving. Looks like it will!
