Justified - Season 3 (FX)

Returns tomorrow night, Tuesday, January 17th, on FX. My wife and my brother-in-law were both born on January 17th, yet THIS January 17th will be better than any other in history. I'm pretty excited.

Also, while Carla Gugino's love-interest character is a marshal named "Karen," she's (allegedly) not Karen Sisco. Instead, she will be:

Quote:
Karen Goodall, an assistant director of the U.S. Marshals Service, who arrives in Kentucky to assist in the well-being of key witnesses. Look for Gugino's character to be twice-divorced and to share a history with Raylan Givens: she worked with him in Miami, FX sources confirm.

The Elmore Leonard-synchronicity would've been fun. Hell of a missed chance, if you ask me. In whose freakish mind did the jump to having her be Sisco seem so huge? She's played by the same actress. She's named "Karen." She's worked in Miami.

Or is this a case of my arch-enemy, IP Rights, once again fucking things up for everyone? I still think she's Karen Sisco. It says she's twice-divorced, so "Goodall" could easily be the surname of Husband #2.

^ That would be my guess. "Karen Sisco" was a Universal production, while "Justified" is a Sony/FX co-production. Add an ex-husband or two to explain the name change, cast the same actress, and let the audience fill in the blanks.

Elmore Leonard has a new novel featuring the character coming out tomorrow:
500
Leonard's character provided the basis for the show, now the show's reinvigorated Leonard's interest in the character.

Also, very interestingly, current FX president John Landgraf was a producer on Karen Sisco.

The book appears to based more on the TV-version of Raylan, as opposed to the book-version. The characters are pretty different in Leonard's prose, mainly book-Raylan being a dumbass.

I'm getting the sense that it'll be like Bernard Cornwell's post-TV "Sharpe" novels, where he hews the character much closer to Sean Bean's portrayal than in the previous series. So we'll get the "original" Raylan, but with added touches to link him up to the TV version.

While I'd known that Season 2 of Justified was going to figure somehow into the storyline of the novel, I hadn't realized it would change so radically: Dickie and Coover, along with the coal-company rep, appear to be the only significant characters carried over from the TV show, and there are several significant plot/subplot elements that appear completely unrelated to the show.

So, on the one hand, good -- it's not just a rehash of what we've already seen. But I have to admit, I would've loved to have read Leonard's treatment of Mags, or his version of Raylan dealing with the marked money.

Very fired up for the return of Justified.

Have reserved the new novel from my library, just haven't gotten the call yet. After watching the round table on the blu-ray, my interest in the novel increased ten-fold. Glad to here it's a good read.

45 minutes to go. Deeply tempted to put on a cowboy hat while watching it, for some reason. Just caught an ad featuring Evil Neal McDonough™.

Kinda hope they don't try to have any of the villains eclipse Martindale, because it ain't gonna happen. I think I'm more interested in where they're going to take Boyd this season. He's easily one of the best anti-heroes on TV right now.

Did I just witness a menacing performance from friggin' Quinn??

Hope he resurfaces. Imagine he will at some point; otherwise they'd have just had Raylan off him tonight. Any episode that finds time for Dewey Crowe and his onanism deserves an "A."

Fucking great premiere -- had everything I love about the show. Can anyone ever replace Mags? I suppose not, but I was never THAT concerned about it. As fantastic as Margo Martindale was, she wasn't the only thing making the show great.

Having a bigger rogues' gallery, possibly in conflict with each other as much as Raylan and the marshals, seems like a great way to go.

Also, I know Neal McDonough's character is from Detroit. I know that.

But part of me still wants to think that he's actually from the greater San Diego Metro area, and that he had to move back east because of the heat caused by a certain unlicensed private investigator...

Yeah, pretty interesting role for Desmond Harrington.  It was bizarre how he went into character when he was about to kill someone, but spoke like the "Quinn" we know at other times.  Would be a shame if he's already gone.

He only got winged. I sort of figure that if Raylan had actually killed him, he wouldn't be moaning and grabbing his shoulder -- on this show, dead usually happens pretty quickly.

Quarles' sleeve-gun contraption was badass. That was some Travis Bickle-shit right there.

This show deserves something higher than an A+, so we need to come up with some new letters. All of Justified's letter grades should be replaced with the outline of a cowboy hat.

Too many great lines tonight:

  • "You can only spank it so much."
  • "I could be the guy on the radio telling everybody what to do." "That's my job, asshole."
  • "My fried chicken's to die for."
  • "You gonna eat that pizza?"
  • "Now, if you'll excuse me, I have women's tennis to watch."
  • "How much money we talking about?" "Well over ten dollars." "If I ever found that much money, I think I'd go down to Mexico."

In the showdown with Ice Pick Nix, I was thinking, "Man, I hope Raylan has his backup piece, and if he does, that he can get to it and pull it in time." Turns out he had a much simpler solution.

The Pick was too narrowly focused on his own way of cheating at his little game of death that he couldn't see it coming. The look on Raylan's face when he said they'd both go for the gun on "one" was priceless, too. You could see his bullshit-detector going off, and the wheels turning. Loved it.

That wasn't even the best part of that exchange.  Raylan said, "I've been to Mexico and I don't think you'd like it.", and Boyd asked, "How so?"  To which Raylan replied, "There's a lot of Mexicans."

Awesome premiere. Loved the Raylan/Boyd interview. Guess we could see that the fight between them was just a set-up so Boyd could be near Dickey.

Laughed at the conversation between Dewey and Dickey and the look of terror that came over both of them at the sight of Boyd.

"Do you know who I am, now?" biggrin.gif Great introduction of Quarles. Nice to see Wynn Duffy in the mix.

So glad this is back.

In the spirit of the "What would Elmore Do?" philosophy of the showrunners, a large rogues gallery is essential.  Most of Leonard's stories are variations on the Pardoner's tale where characters wind up unwittingly pursuing their own demise due to avarice.  They don't have  to kill every one of them, but If their fatal mistakes are never actually fatal, it would start to get stale.

I was going to post that it was a great premiere but then I read some of the posts and I think I drifted off at some point because I don't know what everyone is talking about - lol

Stupid cold is making me really tired - I will have to go back and rewatch.

Justified doesn't rebuild. It reloads.

So that's the "Band of Brothers"-count up to three, now, right? McDonough, Richard Speight Jr., and Rick Gomez. I'll put a nickel on Frank John Hughes popping up.

We also need some Ronald Speirs up in this bitch.

Ha, true. laugh.gif Boyd would have some issues there, no doubts about it.

Right on. I think that Boyd being incarcerated is actually going to be very cool for the narrative. It gives Ava a chance to shine, and it furthers the Bennett-feud, because you know he's gunning for Dickie. It's also nice to see Dewey Fucking Crowe again.

Boyd's probably the best regular character on TV (non-"Breaking Bad" division). Without making him some bullshit all-knowing criminal mastermind -- i.e., letting $100,000 in weed go to mold was pretty bush-league -- he's always so purposeful, even when he screws up. Since Boyd was angling to get sent to prison to rain-check Dickie's ass, he could afford to be sanguine about the whole thing.

Orchestrating getting sent to lockup so he can get payback on Dickie -- and just as important, forcing Raylan to keep his word, intentionally or not -- was a perfect Boyd "B"-plot, all laid out with the efficiency that makes Justified the best show currently going on the drama side of the fence (at least until March/April roll around).

Can't argue with that, although I think 'Shameless' has to be in the conversation.  Of course we could call 'Shameless' a comedy and call it a day.

We do!! And, it's nice to have you here...

I don't know why I find that kind of funny, considering how cold it was for Desmond's character to kill the pizza guy just like that. And the name "Ice Pick", I could not help but think of a minor character from Magnum PI.

And I was like "Damn!" when Ava whacked the guy with the skillet, showing him who's boss!

Now if we can only get Michael Keaton to consider a season-long, Raylan-team-up arc for next year...

I have a hunch that Dickie won't prove to be such easy prey for Boyd as the end of last week's episode hinted at.

This show seems to have arrived at a place where it can just be effortlessly great. Everyone has their shit locked down. And the scripts especially are just so fucking sharp. Pretty much every character in Justified could lead their own show. They'd be very different shows, but that just shows how strong the writing is.

For instance: "Dewey Crowe: Adventures On Mars."

I would watch the SHIT out of that. Mostly, it's him masturbating, getting jacked in the nose, and impersonating everyone else he meets...poorly. I rewatched the Dewey S2 episode where he robs the robbers with his "Raylan" disguise. Him being on film spouting Olyphant's lines (originally directed at Crowe waaaay back in the pilot episode of the show) is a national treasure.

"Well, I think I might need a spot..."

So who's next on the Band of Brothers reunion-tour? That's Compton, and now Guarnere.

This episode, featuring Raylan and Karen, was like an Elmore Leonard version of a superhero team-up. His own "Wolverine & Hulk" issue. But then it turns out that Colossus is also in this issue, and ends up being all kinds of awesome.

Art using the "old book" to deal with that guy? Holy shit.

Art Mullen: Old-School Badass. You may not want him in a foot chase, but he still rocks the close-in work.

Butcher: The third-most-ominous profession (first being undertaker, followed by dentist).

Also, someone here now owes me a nickel.

Totally pulled the whole "Frank John Hughes" prediction cold out of my ass last week. Had no idea he'd been cast in the second episode.

(...Seriously, where's my nickel?)

Thanks for that!

But I have another casting question.

Who played Boyd's helpful prison guard?

I think the guard was played by Todd Stashwick but I'm not certain.
Really enjoyed Limehouse explaining things to the young fellow. Noticed that his "Dad" also had scarred hands. Nice bit of continuity.

So great so far.

Loved Art getting into the "swing" of things. Guy must have nearly wet himself when Art fired those shots into the wall.

Boyd picking a fight with the skinheads biggrin.gif.

Can't wait for more.

So hot Carla is playing Karen Sisco again?  This should be interesting going forward.

The show rocks. Period.

Nice teeth Mykelti is rockin'.

Can Carla come back to play every other week? Soooo fine.

Another fantastic episode. McDonough's smile was priceless. He's a formidable villain, for sure. I wanna hear the rest of the story about how he got the track for his Taxi Driver gun-setup. "I was out shopping for a Christmas tree, and..."

And LeGros, bringing the heat! I love that guy. LeGros is hilariously sad/sadly hilarious as oxy-addicted Wade, especially "9... 1... 1...." So pathetic, even Raylan can't stay mad at him.

Can't wait till Boyd and Quarles start to have conflicting interests. Raylan's gonna be the least of his problems.

Among one of the coolest lines for any character on TV: "next one's comin' faster."

LeGros is great, and his presence is, in its way, as great a piece of "meta-casting" as having Carla Gugino play Karen "can't say Sisco or someone will sue" Goodall.  LeGros was, of course, the first actor to play Raylan Givens on screen.  I was happy to see his Oxy-addled character come back, and equally happy to see him survive the episode.  He and Olyphant really play well off of each other.

I love how they're slowly chipping away at just how menacing Quarles is. What the fuck was up with that guy tied to the bed? (To say nothing about how totally weirded-out Wynn "Blowtorch-and-Machete" Duffy looks when he sees him...)

It's interesting to consider that, while Mags was the big baddie last season, she was also pretty much the big peace-broker. This season, there's really no one left to fill that role, and all these different groups are converging on Harlan with an eye on controlling everything.

Raylan is gonna have his hands (and a lot of bodybags) full.
