A few words about...™ Wings -- in Blu-ray - Page 3

oh, you guys convinced me! I just bought it from amzn. I've really blown my blu-ray budget sky high this month. It'll be interesting to see this one after reading it on lists since I was a lad...

You will really enjoy it. It has an excitement about it...kinda like the first day of Spring!

Ok, maybe I'm on crack but I thought Wings had a scene where someone opens a door to a room and you briefly see a line of bare male butts waiting for a physical. Is it some other silent movie I'm thinking of? Not that I'm into men's bare butts but as a kid I remember watching this scene with my stepmother and her exclaiming "oh my", so it sticks out in my memory.

I just watched my copy two nights ago, Bob...and that scene is on the Bu-ray.  It is when the boys go to their physicals (there's a dog sitting on a chair inside the door of the room).  When the guy in charge is talking to the newbies, you'll see the door behind him open and the lineup of naked men waiting for their physicals.

It would definitely be easy to miss.  I almost did.  My wife got a kick out of it when I went back and showed her what was going on in film in 1927!  laugh.gif

This really was one terrific presentation of this film.  I cannot believe how good the elements looked.  Outside of some missing frames, there was hardly anything that took me out of the film.  Loved the orchestral score, too.

Ok Mike, thanks. I must have blinked and missed it.

I finally got around to watching this. It's amazing how fast it goes by for a longish film! Like most of the great silent films, there is not too much time wasted on dialogue so as to keep the intertitles to a minimum. I wish more movies today could be as tightly structured as Wings.

The combat footage, both in the air and on the ground is spectacular. I never thought of Mendelssohn's Midsummer Night's Dream as appropriate for aerial combat music; but it was quite effective. The entire cast was great. Really a total winner. My wife was crying at the end.

So, last night turned out to be that perfect one I'd wanted for viewing Wings.  What a revelation.  During the first part, as much as I was loving it, the experience was so intense that I considered saving the second half till tonight.  But at the intermission title card I knew that after a short break I'd be back in my seat.

No sense in repeating all the praise everyone has already heaped upon this.  I do have to say I found the orchestral score exceptional in every way, and I'll echo David's remark above re Mendelssohn's "Midsummer Night's Dream" music.  Who would ever think you could take one of the most sublimely magical pieces of music ever written, use it to underscore not only the initial bliss and excitement of the flying, but then transform it into something of urgency and near-violence...all the while retaining its original "magic"?  STUNNING.

This morning I skimmed this entire thread because I'd figured earlier that there were a few things discussed that wouldn't mean as much till I'd seen the film.  That was rewarding in itself, answering a few questions and supporting a few observations.  After watching the film last night I felt that attempting to digest the documentary features would be overload, so I'm looking forward to those tonight.

Finally watched this one. Quite an epic production. The stunts and special effects are jaw dropping. Good drama too. I can see why this won Best Picture. I'd pick it over The Artist!
