More Paramount titles via Olive Films have been announced with a March 27th release date. They are:

Frank Sinatra (DVD & Blu-Ray):
Come Blow Your Horn (1963)
Assault on a Queen (1966)

Jerry Lewis (DVD & Blu-Ray):
It's Only Money (1962)
Who's Minding the Store? (1963)

Some 1950's dramas on DVD:
No Man of Her Own (1950)
Something to Live For (1952)
Also out is 1963's Dean Martin and Lana Turner comedy Who's Got the Action? with Eddie Albert and Walter Matthau on both standard & Blu-Ray.

Who's Minding the Store... awesome! The one Lewis title I wanted that wasn't included in the DVD boxset.

Can these films be ordered on Amazon or they exclusive

to a website?  I have yet to order an Olive Films release,

but very interested in the Jerry Lewis titles

Yeah, need to know that because a couple of these are must-haves, Who's Minding the Store especially.

Every Olive Film I have bought has been through Amazon.  The Olive website and Amazon have been the same price in the past.  The only saving would be through shipping if you have Amazon Prime.

Yep, Olive Films titles are available in wide online retail. They are usually cheaper from other retailers, where I generally bought them in the past.

Ron,

Available for pre-order on Amazon:
Boeing Boeing
Rock-a-bye Baby
Geisha Boy

I would imagine Who's Minding The Store and Its Only Money will be up shortly.

You gotta be kidding with the $28.95 price tag on these releases.

I just can't pay that kind of price for a catalog Blu-ray release.

If it were Twilight's Last Gleaming, then perhaps, but otherwise

I am going to hope for a price drop.

No Man of Her Own is very good

The Olives should drop lower, so to speak. In the meantime, as has been previously mentioned, a number of these, including STORE, MONEY, and NO MAN, are streaming on Netflix.

In general, are these bare bones or are there sometimes extras?

Usually bare-bones, which is probably contractually stipulated by Paramount.

Someone over at Blu ray.com listed four new titles:

Tales That Witness Madness

The Spirit Is Willing

Night Of The Grizzly

The Hangman

There was also a link to IMDB that listed all of the films Olive has licensed from Paramount and among others I am hoping The Court Martial Of Billy Mitchell and and A New Leaf are released sometime this year.

Unfortunately, I've heard the WHO'S MINDING THE STORE transfer is terrible. Taken from a poorly timed color element and done in 1080I over a decade ago, this new Blu-ray is a far cry from the high quality of the original Technicolor cinematography.

It's Only Money looks pretty good - not pristine, but very sharp with excellent contrast. Not a great Jerry or Tashlin, although, that said, there are some fall out of your seat funny bits.

That's TERRIBLE news about Who's Minding the Store.  If true, then that is one huge disappointment.

It's true, the report comes from a VERY reliable source, somebody who does restoration work and knows what it can and should look like. Here are some of the comments:
Quote:
This is one of the WORST looking transfers I’ve seen on BD—--with zero amount of DRS work, little scene-to-scene color correction, and transferred from a poorly produced element that is consistently soft on the right side.

I used to own a 35mm Technicolor print. The color was outstanding and this release needs to be withdrawn and re-mastered.

Two of them are up for preorder on Amazon.  Right now, they're 20.99 each.  That price might increase very soon.

The Night of the Grizzly

The Hangman

I watched a little of this today - for all those complaining about the quality of Demetrius and the Gladiators, you now have something truly terrible to compare it to - and once you've seen this, you know that Demetrius is more than acceptable. Simply put, this is an ancient transfer off a faded element (and certainly not the camera negative) - it's not just the completely brown washed out color, it's the softness of it all - truly terrible.

For all you sci-fi lovers, here's some good news...these are being released in June.

Space Children...first time anywhere and I just bought the movie poster

Project X...first time anywhere and I just bought this movie poster too

Colossus of New York...I just bought this last year in SD, CRAP!

...of course, Crack in the World came out last year.

I'm going to hold off for awhile buying any of sci-fi/horror SDs from Olive Films, not going to double dip if I help it.

I just bought "Come Blow Your Horn" on Olive Films blu-ray. I must say for higher price I expected better. The quality was poor and as far as bare bones, this couldn't get any more bare bones. NOTHING..no extras at all and a big minus, no close captions. For the higher price you'd think they'd do more..sorry, but I'm not buying any more Olive Film blu rays!!

The Mountain was a very entertaining film. Tracy was fantastic in it. 90% of the transfer was sharp and detailed. Nice amount of grain left in

Well, my expectations aren't exactly sky-high for Olive Films blus. They are a bit like VCI in which they are licensed transfers of variable quality. That's why some of their releases or only released on DVD. So I would recommend (if it isn't obvious now) to not expect the image quality of these to rival top-drawer studio HD transfers and some may look pretty weak compared to others.

I'm a bit more forgiving to Olive an its ilk, since they are not really responsible for making transfers, more Paramount for not having something better. However, I think they should use a bit more discretion as to which transfer would truely benefit from a blu-ray release, and I think they are tempted to release borderline acceptable transfers on blu if the film is in color and widescreen since it seems that the DVD-only titles are almost exclusively B&W, pre-widescreen titles.

I would like to add some good news on this title in that it improves quite a bit as the film goes on--the worst of the image quality is in the first part of the film during the opening credits and some minutes afterward.

While not as good as It's Only Money, which looked good enough to have been groomed for a "Jerry Lewis vol. 2", I certainly didn't find it to be some sort of travesty. Overall a middling, if occasionally lacking, transfer.

Well the same goes for Twilight Time, these small companies can only put out what the studios give them. Has anyone seen, Assault On A Queen?

Twilight Time did seem to be in the same boat when it started out, when it made do with a letterboxed, non-anamorphic release of Violent Saturday. However, since it is more limited in scope compared to Olive's release schedule, it has taken more of a collectors' sensibility in terms of transfers and will only release high quality HD transfers.

As for Assault on A Queen, I thought it looked pretty spiff on blu. Visible grain, hardly any dirt, clear picture. I'd recommend it.

Thanks, I think I'll get that. Who'd have thought that Assault On A Queen would get a Blu-ray release when it never made it to DVD. I agree about Twilight Time, I think they learned a lesson, I'm sure they'll require a good trasfer before releasing anymore titles. And it looks like they could be all Blu-ray now.

I agree it gets a little better after the first ten minutes or so and I agree that "middling" is a good word for it. I don't like middling, that's my problem smile.gif

I wonder if we'll ever get any of the Martin and Lewis films on blu-ray? Also i hope the original Invasion Of The Body Snatchers blu-ray coming in july turns out good.

Two more great noirs from Olive: Force of Evil and Body and Soul. A double-dose of John Garfield, both due July 30.
