2012 Film List (Reviews, Discussion, Tracking)

Q: What is the 2012 Film List?

A: The 2012 Film List thread is mainly for discussing, reviewing and tracking 2012 films. The "Track the films you watch" thread is a great place to keep track of all films watched in a year, though any are welcome to track all their film watching here if they so desire. This is also a great place to discuss smaller release, independent and foreign films that probably won't get a dedicated review and discussion thread. And this thread is useful for keeping track of what 2012 films you watched when you're compiling an end of year list or a top ten next December.

Q: Are there any rules?

A: At the top of your list, state the criteria you are using for updates. Some common criteria are: Films released in North American theaters in 2012. Films in wide release in 2012. Films seen in a movie theater in 2012 regardless of original release date Films seen in a movie theater in 2012 and DVDs of films released in North American theaters in 2012.

Every time you update your list, try to reply to the thread with a short comment related to your updates. This will keep the thread on the first page, and hopefully get some discussion going.

Puss in Boots - 2.5/5* - Cinema

"Puss in Boots" - star.gifstar.gif.5
Average fare.
Some very good parts, some poor parts. Overly confused finale.
Still okay for the kids and just enough for the adults.
Banderas has fun.

Yes.

But in previous years there wasn't a confusing second option in thread titles.

Where were you when I needed you Michael?

Mox nix, there's so little traffic here anymore that I still got on the first page 23 days into the year.

That never would have happened before.

Twelve films seen theatrically is without question a record for me in a single month (although the latest was actually on 2/1). Most of them were the leftovers from 2011.

Of the new viewings:

Roadie star.gifstar.gifhalf.gif

I watched this one on television. After a slow start the film finally picked up but the downfall of a Blue Oyster Cult roadie isn't as fun as it should have been. Still, an interesting film for those who want to get away from Hollywood.

The Devil Inside star.gifstar.gif

Sorry, this isn't the worst horror film ever made and the ending certainly isn't one of the worst of all time. There's a good lead performance but ZERO scares, no drama and the big twist at the end is so easy to see coming. This "documentary footage" stuff appears to be wearing thin.

The Wicker Tree star.gifstar.gif

Finally, after nearly four decades the original WICKER MAN gets the second entry. I'm not certain if one should call it a remake, a sequel or a reboot but it's certainly disappointing. Anchor Bay released this and lets hope their DVD/Blu looks better than the 35mm prints, which are faded and the sound was pretty bad. Even worse is that there's a sex scene where English subtitles are turned on even though the actors are speaking English! Still, it was fairly neat to see such a limited release (10 theaters) come near my area.

Sad news about "The Wicker Tree'. I guessed as much though.

Puss in Boots - 2.5/5* -
Journey 2: Mysterious Island - 2.5/5*

"Journey 2: Mysterious Island" - star.gifstar.gif.5

Dwayne Johnson rides a giant bee, gets kissed by comic fat guy in a bad shirt, plays a small guitar, sings, punches a monster lizard on the nose and calls Michael Caine a Grandma.

Thread Bump: Added 21 Jump Street, easily the most insane comedy I've seen this year.

I really meant to keep updating my theatrical viewings but fell behind.

I just got back from BEING FLYNN. It's funny how for the past decade people have screamed that Robert DeNiro just takes crap roles. Well, when he doesn't (this and EVERYBODY'S FINE) no one goes to see them. I really can't remember the last movie where I loved and cared for each character so much. Raw and depressing but powerful. Too bad it's bombing at the box office.

GHOST RIDER 2: I enjoyed the first one to a point but this here was just horrid. Cage has officially been taken over by the spirit of John Carradine. Both men could be brilliant at times and at other times appear in Z grade trash. I used to laugh and have a good time with Cage's madness but here is was just awful. I left the theater hoping to not see a worse movie for the rest of 2012 but that night I watched TIM AND ERIC'S BILLION DOLLAR MOVIE. I didn't give it a BOMB rating because it was unlike anything I've ever seen. The fact that those who do like it send me death threats tells me all I need to know about these two and their fans.

SILENT HOUSE, I wasn't really impressed with this "all shot in one take" movie. I thought Olsen was great in the film but the entire one take thing just didn't work. It didn't build any suspense, terror and it proves that editors are very important to movies. With that said, I didn't know it was a remake so I went and watched the original a few days later and hated it. This remake actually improves the ideas but it's still a fail.

GONE was certainly made by producers wanting to make cash instead of making a great film. There are moments here and a story that could have made for a great film but sadly they always go for the cheap route and in the end it just doesn't come together. Seyfried was good though but hopefully she gets back on the indie route and not these teenage stuff.

21 JUMP STREET.... Never watched the TV show but I thought this was a pretty funny movie. It ended up going on a bit too long but the majority of the jokes worked and the cameo was very good.

GOON is a hockey movie about a guy who beats people up. A few funny scenes but it's certainly not SLAP SHOT. About 30-minutes into the movie I just realized that I didn't care about ANY of the characters.

I finally got a chance to catch up with A SEPARATION and it's clearly the best film of 2011 and I'd really, really be shocked if I saw one better in 2012. I thought the movie was perfect in every way possible and I can't remember the last time a movie really struck such a spot with me.

I also just got back from WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN, which was a depressing but strong film that reminded me of something Polanski would have done in the 70s. What does a mother do when she's the only one who realizes she's given birth to an evil kid? Tilda Swinton was robbed by not even getting a nomination.

I also managed to see THE GODFATHER last week on its re-release. Even though the theater started it 30-minutes too long it was still fun seeing it on the big screen again. The new print was wonderful and I probably enjoyed it more this time than I have in the past. I still don't think it's one of the greatest films ever made and even though Brando is my favorite actor I'm still not completely sold on his performance here.

Looks like I'm the only one dropping $10 to watch movies. smile.gif

MIRROR MIRROR....I let my girlfriend pick this one. The start was boring, the middle good and the end boring. I didn't care for any of the actors outside the dwarfs. Just wasn't fun enough to work.

JEFF, WHO LIVES AT HOME. If you've seen the trailer then you've pretty much seen the entire movie. Great performances, nice story but nothing that's going to change your life.

AMERICAN REUNION, after two bland sequels we get a very good movie. A lot of laughs and truths about growing up.

THE RAID: REDEMPTION if this one comes close you should really check it out. Even if you hate subtitles this Indonesian movie simply kicks ass. Non-stop action and violence. A great story. Just an all around good time that really raises the bar in regards to action movies.

THE THREE STOOGES isn't a classic but it's pleasant enough. It kept a smile on my face throughout and there were some pretty good laughs. It starts to grow old the final twenty-minutes but the three actors did a remarkable job. Jennifer Hudson should have been on the editing room floor.

BULLY doesn't teach you anything you already know. It's well-meaning and worth watching (not worth $10) but it answers no questions about bullying. Bullying has always happened but it seems just here recently has the end result been so many suicides. I wanted to know why but the film doesn't go there. It really doesn't give you any answers.

THE HUNTER has Dafoe offering up a strong performance but in the end the film just didn't work as well as the filmmakers were hoping. You just keep waiting for something to happen and when it does you're wondering what the entire point was. Yeah, there was no point.
