Prewiring questions(before drywall is up)

Hi everyone Im having my basement clubbed in and I have some questions about the pre wire. The room is ~14 wide by 13' deep,8' ceilings. I am not sure how much I want to spend on speakers yet.

I need to know where to place the wires at in the room I want to do speakers in the wall unless you guys say not to use them. I have access behind the wall where the tv will be so thats not a major concern its the back speakers. Do I have to buy the speakers now or is there a universal box/mount I can buy?I would prefer not to buy the speakers now.

Also if i decide not to do in wall speakers do I just mount elec gang boxes?

One more question I have a nice mirage speaker set upstairs that I could use they are model avs-200 speakers. Any good? this would be my best option since there here and free they are about 10 yrs old but they were alot of dough back in the day, whatcha think?

Hi Mike,

In wall can work but generally free standing speakers will perform better than in-wall (more flexible for proper placement too). Avoid ceiling mounted speakers.

Check out this speaker placement guide from Dolby. Notice there are no 'rears' if you are doing 5.1.

I agree with Dave re: in-ceiling and in-wall speakers. In-wall speakers can be trickier to place, and they can't be moved if you re-arrange the furniture. Also if you want decent sound, you really have to buy speakers that are designed to go in-wall. And they almost have to be professionally installed to get the best out of them. You can't just take speaker with a normal enclosure and stick it in a wall.

Also if you ever sell the place you have to leave your speakers behind or pay for drywall and paint when you take them out.

As for in-ceiling - where do you find ceiling speakers in real life? Airports. Supermarkets. Theaters? Not so much. There's a reason for that.

The nice thing about speakers is that they don't become obsolete. (Unlike the rest of your system smiley_wink.gif) I have gone through 3 receivers, 4 DVRs, 5 DVD and Blu Ray players and 3 TVs in the 12 years or so since I bought my Atlantic Technology 5.1 system. But the speakers are still going strong.

Definitely look at the speaker placement guide Dave linked to. You can still run some of the wiring in-wall. I did this at my last place. Get some speaker wire rated for in-wall use (I got a 50 ft reel at Home Depot for a good price.) Use a basic junction box (the kind you'd use for a telephone jack) and faceplates with audio jacks. Install two on the back wall behind your equipment rack and two more in discreet locations close to where you'll want the surround speakers to go. Then you just run wire and banana plugs from the receiver to the speakers and plug into the wall.
