Well she was pretty good to me:(. We were together for 8 years or so, it never let me down,...oh well!!! What do I replace her with? I haven't really kept up with the receiver market. I'm certanly catching up now and I was curious what some of you thought about comparable receivers in that price/quality range?? I'll list my equipment below.

Receiver = (Yamaha RX-V2400) deceased
Speakers l+R = Paeadigm Monitor 9's.
Center = Paradigm CC370.
Sub = SVS PB2-ISD
TV = Panasonic TC-P55GT31
Sat Rec = Dish VIP-722K-DVR
No surrounds, was using another pair of Monitor 9's but gave them to a friend, I will have to find something else to use for surrounds now too.

I know the mourning period wasn't very long but you gotta move on, right?

In my opinion, the best deal out there at the moment is a Factory Refurbished Marantz SR5005 7.1 channel 3D ready (HDMI 1.4a) receiver at accessories4less.com for $380. The most important feature of this receiver is the 7,1 channel pre-outs allowing you to use this receiver as a pre-pro and get external amplification for the fronts (and maybe center channel) and still come in under budget for a brand new equivalent to the Yamaha RX-V2400 (RX-A2000 for ~$1500) but you would have way more power and flexibility.

I hate to show my ignorance here but I don't really know how to go about using externel amps and such. I'm no idiot but just never had any experience with them. I did drop my receiver off at a shop today and I will see how much it would cost to repair it. I hope not too much but with my luck it will be right at a price point that will recquire a decision of new versus repair. I was thinking about that earlier and I think if it costs more than $400.00 to fix it then I will probably just get a new one ($1000.00 to $1500.00). I don't have a lot of experience with this stuff but would hate to throw $400 at it then something else decides it's time to go out. What's your experience with this stuff? Are they like cars and just start giving out or what??

Personally, I wouldn't repair it at almost any cost. A newer receiver just has too much more to offer. I used several very good older receivers for several years, like An H/K 520, Pioneer Elite 59txi, H/K 7200, etc. and recently started buying newer stuff (a Pioneer Elite SC-27 from Audiogon is on the way!). They have so many more features and user settings that even though I truely love older gear I'll probably stick with the newer stuff from now on. And you probably don't need to spend that much to get better performance than what you had with the 2400, particularly if you use an outboard amp. A $500-$700 receiver will most likely do the job. Just figure what you want to connect to the receiver and how you plan on using it. Hooking an amp to a receiver really only requires that it have pre-outs with a 12 volt trigger very recommended. But make sure the receiver you buy has them. The New Marantz 5006 only has pre-outs for the front two channels while last years 5005 has them for all 7 channels. S-Video and multi-channel inputs are also disappearing from new receivers. Down-load a manual or two from manufactures websites for a couple of new receivers that you might be interested in and you'll see what we mean.

I wouldn't repair it unless it was under $200.

The Marantz 5005 for $380 is an absolute steal and you could very well be happy with it on its own without using external amps. However, using external amps is extremely easy. Instead of having the speaker connected to the AVR's speaker post, you have an RCA cable plugged into the AVR's pre out for the channel (i.e. front left) go to the external amp and then you have that speaker (front left) connected to the speaker post on the amp. Very simply and ups the cool factor 100% cool.gif As Gene suggested, download the manual for a receiver you are considering ahead of purchase and do a little fun reading smile.gif

I am in the same position. I have the same Receiver Yamaha *RXV-2400 and I'm planning on replacing it with a Yamaha RXV-1067 (european version) will I be upgrading?. Just recently bought the Take 5 Energy home theater speakers package and I want to pair them up with newer receiver. Would I be upgrading in regards to sound quality? Thanks

That looks like an awfull lot of receiver for that Take 5 speaker package. But yes, without having owned a Yamaha receiver I would say sound quality should ba at least as good, and probably better if YAPO is anywhere near as good as MCACC and Audyssey. But features,flexability and ease of use is where a new receiver can really shine.
