Voting January 1st-29th

These are the votes that count the most!  They are based on nominations from members of HTF --- not a panel of judges or a team of reviewers.

During the last week of December members nominated their best and worst choices of studios and Blu-ray titles.  We have taken the top 5 choices* in each category and presented them to our membership to vote a winner.

Voting will take place January 1st-29th.  Members can vote ONCE in each category.  The winners will be announced on the morning of Monday January 30th.

*In cases where there were not enough nominations or too many closely nominated titles, we went above or below 5 choices.

WORST BOXED SET 2011

What single Boxed Set release failed miserably in providing a package with quality extras?  This would be a release where a studio failed miserably to connect with the title's fanbase.

Please feel free to discuss your reasons for your vote.

This will better help the studios understand how consumers feel

about the product they are voting for.

We may include some of them when we post the final list of winners

in each category

"Wonka".  Nice product but not vaguely worth the high asking price...

Colin, I felt the same way about the Wonka boxed set.

It could have been one of the best boxed sets if the folks

at Warner pumped some "pure imagination" into its contents

rather than providing pencils and scented erasers.

The cast was doing a lot of press around the time of the

anniversary.  Too bad Warner couldn't film new segments

including one with Gene Wilder.   All we are basically getting

is the same content of the digibook release and a bunch of

junk in the boxed set with the exception of the books.

Under "failed miserably to connect with the title's fanbase" -- well, all the nominees did to some extent, but George Lucas wins for lifetime achievement in this endeavor.

Star Wars.

This is tough for me because of the movies mentioned, Star Wars(original trilogy) is by far the most iconic. I did enjoy the originals a great deal, and think the quality is superb. This is where the praise ends.

-I wanted the deleted scenes, but in order to see those I had to buy the complete series set. Never cared a whole lot for the prequels, but oh well.

-New special features are for the most part uninteresting to me(the props were ok).

-No special features from the previous editions.....are you kidding me? Pathetic. I aced all of my SE dvd's the minute I pre-ordered the Blu-Ray.

-Changing the original trilogy yet again. Vader's sacrifice being the most jarring. Didn't need it. Hayden Christenson is still the ghost at the end Of Jedi.

-And of course the exclusion of the original trilogy un-altered.

I bought the set after I swore I wouldn't do it. This is the power of the great original films. I love Star Wars. But the way Lucas has treated the original films is abysmal.

As a Blu-ray version of The Creator's "current vision" of his work, this is not bad.

However, the continuing effort to modify these titles into the trivial astounds me.

I have gotten over Star Wars, even my son has gotten over Star Wars. It is so 1977.

I agree about the Willy Wonka set.  Saw no reason to buy a big box of a movie I already have, in an edition I already enjoy.

For me, a Box Set has to have something special to it - like the ones for Gone With the Wind or The Wizard of Oz.  Or the Blade Runner briefcase.  Those are sets I am proud to own, and which I have been happy to play for guests.

What bothered me most about the Willy Wonka box was that all other versions of the Blu-ray are out of print now, so if you want the film on Blu-ray and didn't already have it, you've got to buy this very expensive box filled with worthless trinkets just to get the movie in high definition. That's NOT being user/consumer friendly.

"Wonka" had nothing new to offer fans of the film who already bought the digibook (which was quite nice) I already owned the digibook and the hardcover "Pure Imagination" so this was a pass for me - but for new fans who didn't own the books this was an okay set

"West Side Story" was a disappointing set - I found the DVD boxed set was better (the script/souvenir program etc). The new stuff in the blu-ray box was really not exciting and I could have done without it.

"Star Wars" was okay - as a box set - the problem with "Star Wars" has nothing to do with the FOX - it has to due with what George Lucas orders be released - people want the original films - the revisions are the problem, not the transfer/box set.

And yes, "Star Wars" is being to look terribly dated in 2012

Already owned Superman and would like to get Superman II, but I can wait until WB releases the titles separately

Gotta agree with the majority here and vote Star Wars. The flawed restorations, more headscratch-inducing changes... all the omitted special features... what the hell was George thinking?

By comparison Wonka is just a repackage (which is lazy but at least there's nothing omitted), West Side Story is going to get fixed, and JP and Superman are only here for not very good reasons.

I'm guessing the thinking is that they wanted all new special features for the set. I'm not saying that's a good idea (it doesn't make alot of sense to toss hours and hours of excellent supplements) but if they had ported over all the features and still had all the new stuff, you'd see some people bitching that they were lazy and just ported over the old supplements and didn't make enough new ones.

WEST SIDE STORY.

The problem with the fade out is unforgivable. I truly hope someone got fired for that.

The STAR WARS set is a close second.

Yeah but its still not exactly all new stuff and even if George was trying to appease us who loved the vintage tv specials, he dropped the ball by omitting From Star Wars to Jedi

How could there be a bigger disappointment than the "Star Wars" box set? None of the "goofs" in the other box sets come close.

While I enjoyed the films and actually do not have a huge problem with his tinkering with the originals, the lack of what I think are special features really got me.  One of my big disappointments was the ignoring of the teasers and trailers.  Along with some of the features made for other home releases.

Star Wars,  after all of these years still a topic of discussion, and not in a good way, i just wish that George would come to face the facts that ther is so much love for that little drive-in movie that became something so much more.

No bells, no whistles, no damn extra CGI, i just want to be able to see the original unalterd trilogy, one more time, dont act as if it never existed,

as others have stated at least WSS is getting a fix, just waiting on my email reply back on that issue

Star wars is the worst box set of 2011? Isn't that a bit harsh? In terms of picture quality, this set is exemplary. Sure, the omission of previously available extras is a major pain in the ass but shouldn't be the sole deciding factor when voting for the worse set. The set is also very nicely packaged, no complaints in that dept.
Wonka set had only ONE new feature: a short vintage promo, and NO NEW TRANSFER! A shameless triple dip. I don't like the windowboxed credits either.

WSS has more problems than just the Overture but that's not just in the box set.

Toy Story Ultimate box had nothing but discs, more of them than we needed, in a cheap impractical box that's too big and doesn't organize or protect discs well.

Citizen Kane only remastered the feature, NOT the accompanying "Battle..." Doc, LEAST they could have done was remaster RKO 281 in HD.

Star Wars, hands down. For a set that attempted to ape the excellent Alien Anthology, its failure is glaring.

The packaging seems to be a design choice made by the studio if this is what you mean. The Sound of Music limited edition had the same "pocket" slat for the discs. I'm not a big fan of that particular design but it's way better than the flimsy paper/carboard used by many studios.

It's not so much the packaging design as the association drawn by similarity in packaging and organisation. It infers that this is a set of the same calibre and quality as the Alien Anthology, which it clearly is not.

I really doubt that there was anyone who bought the Star Wars set and expected the same type of release as Alien because of the box that it came in. Maybe there were a few people out there who don't frequent message boards and did expect everything and the kitchen sink to be included but that assumption had nothing to do with the box it came in.
