Sweet merciful crap! Not only is The Worst Movie in Existence coming to blue ray, it's being remastered and is gonna look great! Someone found the original 16mm work print of Manos - the original film that fertilizer salesman/director Hal Warren shot back in 1966 - and it's gonna be released! Seriously, that blows my mind! The haunting Torgo Theme in full 5.1 Stereo Surround? Insanity!

Here's the whole story: http://www.manosinhd.com/?page_id=277

Seriously, they better load this thing up with extras! Okay, most of the cast is dead (save for Debbie, I think), but come on - get the MST guys in to do a (serious, not riffing) commentary track!

Clearly this is proof that the worst thing you can do in the film industry is not make a great film or not make a shit film - but make a a technically sound but completely unremarkable film that no one will remember after it is released on home media

Sweet merciful crap is right -- although I think Ed Wood's greatest hits are far worthy to be given the bluray treatment -- I can't imagine what restoration will have to be to that picture (when people can't get "My Fair Lady" or "West Side Story" right, you know you're in trouble), but with some smart marketing, it could be a big success.

Where the heck did they find a decent print of it? Tarantino's house?

Somebody clearly isn't in on the joke. smiley_wink.gif

The fellow who played the Master is still very much alive, and will be in the sequel that's being made.

Not "they", "he". Click the link and read the background. I've been following this story for the past couple of weeks and it's been amazing to watch support for the project grow and grow and grow.

If they've never seen MST3k or this film, they won't get the title of this thread, but I love it.. so in tune with the film...

Meh, I have seen the mst3k version. I have it on DVD with Santa Clause Conquers the Martians, doesn't make the thread title any less obnoxious to me.
oh well.

Is this seriously being done or is the whole thing a joke? I've never seen this but I will buy this on blu-ray sight unseen just to have what I'd call the book-ends of cinema history. I'd have the greatest film(IMO) ever made, The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly and I'd have what is reportedly the worst film ever made on the same shelf. I've also never seen the MST3K version either so I would come into this without having their commentary playing in my mind as I imagine will happen to a lot of people watching this movie.

I've got some video of a backyard barbecue my family shot in 1988 on VHS. The footage is abit rough and due to the age of the film there's a bit of print damage in the form of chroma noise and "rollout" lines at the bottom of the image, anomalies usually inherent of the format but I'm going to have the tape professionally transferred to a digital medium. I can't do a full restoration but if enough sucke...um, people buy copies I'll be able to finance a full restoration of the original masterpiece and hopefully do a fully featured Blu-ray in the future.

Just kidding, folks. I'm sure this movie has it's fans and I don't mean to take away anybody's enjoyment of it. If Manos is gonna be on Blu-ray that means there's hope for some of my own guilty pleasures making it to high-def glory sonmeday.

The Kickstarter is up, and it's already fully funded. It's a bit pricy for a DVD/Blu - 50 bucks. But considering this is a pretty limited market, I'm not exactly shocked (and you get a T-shirt and a pin with it too).

Here's the planned extras:
* A 2K to 35mm film-out preservation negative, which will also enable us to strike new 35mm prints.
* The production of an audio commentary with surviving members of the original cast.
* A documentary covering the restoration process, to be used as a Blu-ray / DVD extra feature.

Pity they couldn't get some of the Best Brains folks to come provide some thoughts, since they pretty much saved the movie from obscurity - but then he's still working on the extras, so this may not be the final list.

The Blu isn't going to be sold for $50, it's the tier in which donors will receive a copy as a perk.

This is extremely promising since it shows fans are willing to pay to have a film restored out of their own pockets instead of "just" buying a copy on disc. Granted that Manos isn't requiring millions like a large-format or worse condition film, but maybe the majors should use this approach for classics they can't get internal support for.
