Cold Mountain

"stunning!" (Newsweek) work on film, Cold Mountain was honored with an Oscar® for Renée Zellweger's performance (Best Actress in a Supporting Role, 2003), and was nominated for seven Academy Awards® in total. Based on the bestselling novel by Charles Frazier, the film adaptation also stars Jude Law, Nicole Kidman, Brendan Gleeson, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Natalie Portman and Donald Sutherland. Debuting on Blu-ray Disc, the release includes deleted scenes, a "making of" documentary, multiple featurettes and an audio commentary with screenwriter/director Anthony Minghella and editor Walter Murch.

Set in the Civil War, the men of Cold Mountain, North Carolina rush to fight for their rights as part of the Confederate Army. Sure of nothing, Ada (Kidman) vows to wait for her love, Inman (Law) until he returns safely. But after many unanswered letters and as time goes by, Ada, believing Inman dead, must find the strength to move on. But Inman, badly wounded, has begun the journey back to his bride.

Stunning aside, Cold Mountain and other contemporaneous releases from Miramax were some of the worst transfer ever created. We're referring to original Gangs of New York quality.

If these are based upon new image harvests, all will be well, but Cold Mountain, The English Patient, et al, are not Blu-rays to be pre-ordered.

Wait for reviews.

RAH,

Thank you for this.  There was a 5-disc Best Picture

Blu-ray collection that I just posted the press release

for in this area.

It has CHICAGO, CRASH, NO COUNTRY FOR OLD
MEN, THE ENGLISH PATIENT and SHAKESPEARE
IN LOVE.

Amazon is selling it for just above $40.

Was about to jump on it, but after your remarks, I think

I am going to wait.

Chicago is beautiful.  It will be interesting to see which version of Crash is included.

No Country should be fine, as should Shakespeare.

English Patient and Cold Mountain are the unknowns.

If they're quality transfers, then the set is worth the price of admission, even if one has a couple

as they can be gifted.  Great price!

This is one of those situations where keeping tuned to your HTF reviews is essential.

Any reviews for Cold Mountain yet? Amazon has the Blu for $7.99, which is a steal IF it's a fresh transfer. The low price suggests it may not be. This is one film that should look stunning in hi-def if done right.
