WHV Press Release: Fort Apache (Blu-ray) - Page 2

Good God yes. Horror films (Frankenstein); 'daft rubbish', British films of the '50s and '60s; 'cheap rubbish'. And black and white films now, simply 'rubbish' because she has a colour telly. And she's 'not wasting it'. She's a regular Pauline Kael my mum...

We must never have to apologise in any shape or form for black and white movies, because you should (altogether now) "...never apologise mister, it's a sign o' weakness..."

There's a side on shot of Fonda, just before he leads his men out of the fort, a beautiful moment of stillness that captures the cathedral like cloud formations above Monument Valley *perfectly*. Much of Ford's work is painterly; here, in Fort Apache, you have the word defined perfectly.

There is also that transition in My Darling Clementine (1946) where we're looking at the crown of Ike Clanton's stetson. It's early morning, and as he raises his head, the rising sun spills under his hatbrim illuminating his features. It's his last day.

Ford's monochrome films are filled with dancing light and the mystery in shadows.

A pity Ford's most creative and imaginative use of light and shadow in monochrome The Fugitive (1947), shot by the amazingly gifted Gabriel Figueroa, never had a DVD release. Perhaps it will go straight to Blu-ray one of these days?

I have the UK DVD; it's an 'okay' transfer and deserves much better. It was Figueroa wasn't it who inspired Ford to use infrared film on Fort Apache. I believe The Fugitive is mired in rights issues this side of The Pond?

With RED RIVER just about a shoe-in for Criterion, a lot of John Wayne's very finest westerns will have made a Blu-ray debut. I am also pining for SHE WORE A YELLOW RIBBON, and (from Paramount), HATARI!

Another vote for She Wore a Yellow Ribbon. Would like to see that Technicolor beauty on blu...

Glad for all the Fort Apache fans that Warner is releasing this on Blu-Ray. As for me, I also would much rather see Warners release MCQ on Blu-Ray. MCQ was filmed in Technicolor and it would be great to see it on Blu-Ray. Also, I would prefer The Train Robbers and Chisum over Fort Apache. These were also shot in Technicolor. I really wish Warners would release MCQ, The Train Robbers, and Chisum on Blu-Ray soon.

Take Care!

With that, to each his own as being filmed in Technicolor which isn't the case with any of those films doesn't overcome being an inferior film in my opinion.

Those films were all shot in Eastman color, print by Technicolor. There are so many later Waynes I would like to see: Sons of Katie Elder, War Wagon, Chisum, El Dorado, Hatari. Let's be happy for any quality Blu-ray that is released and hope for them all!

I think the cover art of the blu-ray is beautiful but those other posters that Richard W. posted....

I just realized this is being paired up with the Unforgiven blu-ray re-issue, so unfortunately, no more classics for now...

BTW, this is already up for pre-order on Amazon.
