Fort Apache, acclaimed for pairing one of the greatest director-star combinations in Hollywood history, gets the Warner Home Video Blu-ray treatment.

Roughhouse camaraderie, sentimental vignettes of frontier life, massive action sequences staged in Monument Valley – all are part of FortApache. So is Ford’s exploration of the West’s darker side. Themes of justice, heroism and honor that Ford would revisit in later Westerns are given free rein in this moving, thought-provoking film that, even as it salutes a legend, gives reasons to question it.

Master director John Ford, leading man John Wayne and many familiar Ford “stock company” supporting players saddle up for the first time on Blu-ray in the film that is part of the director’s famed 1948 cavalry trilogy(She Wore a Yellow Ribbon and Rio Grande are the others). Henry Fonda (The Grapes of WrathOn Golden Pond), Shirley Temple (reunited with her director from Wee Willie Winkie), Temple’s then-current-husband John Agar, Victor McLaglen, Ward Bond and George O’Brien join Wayne in the stellar cast.

I had no idea this was on the way. What a nice surprise for the new year.

This should be an excellent blu-ray with John Ford's Monument Valley as a co-star with John Wayne.  Always happy to get a Wayne in Blu.

Very good news! Now let's have "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon" and my personal favorite of the trio, "Rio Grande."
Jolly good news.
I'll buy every John Wayne and / or John Ford film that WB puts on Blu-ray.

I'll be in Monument Valley this weekend.
I haven't been there in awhile although I live not far away.

I find the packaging with the poster artwork to be very attractive and pleasing to the eye.

Ford/Fonda/Wayne  SOLD biggrin.gif

WB stated 50 Classics for blu in 2012, i hope its all new classics and the repackage of Unforgiven 20th doesnt count, that would mean 49 more anouncements

and waiting.........

Oh boy, what wonderful news!

Great news. Let's hope it's not a stand-alone release and they soon announce some other classic western for the same date.

I agree with you. Warner has been very good with using original artwork lately on their classic blu-ray titles, such as Mutiny On The Bounty and Meet Me In St. Louis.  The only disapointment lately was The Bad Seed

O.M.G.

This is fabulous news.

Sure hope blu-rays of She Wore a Yellow Ribbon and Rio Grande will follow.

And Wagon Master.

Decent pricing too. Easy decision for an upgrade.

Some one needs to tell Warner that both John Wayne and Henry Fonda had blue eyes. smile.gif

I think that's a fault of the original poster.

Wonder who was vetting this stuff back in 1948!

John Wayne did have blue eyes, but Capt. Kirby York had brown; I thought everyone knew that?

Now that's what I call acting!

Ben Johnson dressed as an Indian doing a horse fall in Fort Apache. Ouch. (Click on the picture for a bigger version.)

I thought classics don't sell well on blu-ray.  At least that's the standard mantra around here.

Somebody at Warner must have missed that memo.

More Wayne and Ford is always fantastic news

When WB gets around to She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949), I hope they will correct the misguided color timing done for the DVD. Take out the mega-dose of yellow and reinstate the red. Of course there is yellow in the film, but not the mega-dose given it. The inherently ruddy earth of Monument Valley and the redness of the sunsets are changed by the megao-dose of yellow. Ned Price did this to a number of classic releases because he has yellow on the brain. Let's hope a different set of eyes are assigned to She Wore a Yellow Ribbon. Also, the DVD was a little too bright. Let there be dark shadows and mistiness in the film again on Blu-ray.

I spoke to someone at Warner yesterday.

The fact that classics aren't selling very well has not changed.

No doubt you have noticed the majority of classics being released

by the studio are being done through the Archive Collection.

However, that doesn't prevent the studio from taking a risk in

releasing some very promising classic titles on Blu-ray from

time to time.

...but don't misconstrue the current situation regarding classics.

Sales are way down and the studios are not using normal retail

as a means to release them to the public.

I would prefer that Warner would release the Dukes "McQ" instead of "Fort Apache".

I´d like to have "Fort Apache" on Blu-ray but the Paul Newman movie "Fort Apache-The Bronx" from 1981.

If you say so.

IMO, I think the 1948 "Fort Apache" is one of the most beautifully filmed movies I ever viewed despite it being in black and white.  Some people I know won't watch a film if it's not in color or widescreen.  Their loss!  When I get in the mood for some great black and white cinematography, I like to watch Fort Apache or The Grapes of Wrath.  It's no accident that both films have the same director.

Remove 'despite it being in black and white' and I agree with the above; it's absolutely gorgeous *because* it's filmed in monochrome. There's a side on shot of Fonda, just before he leads his men out of the fort, a beautiful moment of stillness that captures the cathedral like cloud formations above Monument Valley *perfectly*. Much of Ford's work is painterly; here, in Fort Apache, you have the word defined perfectly.

John,

I did quantify my comment as to why I used the words "despite being in black and white".  I keep trying to get these young people to open their eyes to what they're missing and it's a losing battle for me.

Robert; t'ain't just young people. My mother is 87 and refuses to watch anything in black and white biggrin.gif My son, however, is 19 and has an open mind. Thankfully.

If Warner gets this right, Fort Apache should be a real showcase for black and white cinematography on Blu-ray.

John,

Well, I guess she didn't watch many movies back in her youth then.smile.gif
