Hell on Wheels Season 1

Decent start for the season.   AMC is also reporting this did some very good numbers last night, so that's good for them.

I'm all for a gritty western. I'll tune in and see how it goes.

I was entertained by the Pilot, and I don't consider myself a fan of Westerns, although I am a bit of a history buff. I am intrigued enough to keep watching, despite the lukewarm reviews by critics and the fact that I don't know anyone in the cast, other than Ted Levine. And he is already gone, just like that.

And they really don't hold back on the racial slurs.

It didn't feel 'gritty' to me as much as cliche and cheesy. I think Deadwood has spoiled me...but, I love westerns so I'll continue to give this a chance.

Q, thats more of a hope of what it will be.

And yes, Deadwood has spoiled me too when it comes to westerns. I miss the show.

This show looks interesting but I'm going to wait for it to hit DVD - I don't have the patience or desire to wade through endless commercials. I don't even know why I'm still paying for cable. Every channel is a carbon copy of everything you get with regular broadcast networks, right down to the endless ads and blurbs.

"They can't feel anything! They're dead!"

When the railroad boss put more arrows into a dead body!

Have read recently off the web that Hell on Wheels is to air in the UK on TCM in the New Year.

Am interested in westerns, both film and TV shows, so shall check out this series.

I enjoyed the second episode alot. Much more than the first.

Mixed feelings.  As you can tell, watching it late in the week.  My only conclusion is that Colm Meaney is one of the most under appreciated actors in the biz.  He chews up his scenes

I always liked Colm Meaney too. I'm liking this show and am surprised at some of the negative reviews.

For those that are still watching this show... it has been renewed for a 2nd season.

I was about to abandon ship after the 3rd episode, but as I stuck with it and continued to watch more, I am finding it to be more interesting as the characters are growing on me. Yes, even Durant, even though he can be a douche.

I'm sticking with the remainder of the season, but I don't think I'll be back. Mainly don't like the relentlessly negative depiction of (deleted per forum rules).

I'm liking it more and more. Lots of western stereotypes, but skewed just enough to make things really interesting, IMHO. I've given up on several new shows this year, but not this one.

The show has been getting better & better.

Holy.  Crap.

The first few minutes of this weeks' episode were stunning.

I agree, it certainly is something different from the normal TV shows such as crime dramas, legal stuff, cop shows, "reality" shows, etc. that are so bland. It gives a different setting and time period which is fun to see and the stories they come up with for it.

Hopefully it returns again and this is not the end.

I had the opposite reaction. Despised it. It has become such a cliche to play an action scene with all of the sounds muted and replaced with a completely incongruous song. I was thinking, "Just play the damn scene straight and get this weak coffeehouse bullshit out of here." If I had gone on location and acted out that scene, I would have been pissed with how it ended up in editing.

Hell on Wheels starts in the UK on TCM this coming Sunday.

Will certainly be tuning into the second episode. What will keep my interest is the gritty look, the story about the construction of the railroad and how elements of the show remind me of the film Dances With Wolves. Some of the music I was impressed by, and the landscape photography was superb at times.
