Skyrocketting Hard Drive Prices..

I hadn't posted this here because it's mostly too-techie.. but if you haven't noticed, flooding in Thailand and elsewhere has caused MAJOR HDD shortages.   How major?   From 2 weeks ago, HDD pricing has almost doubled at most online sites and more.. many are limiting quantity and saying there may not be any volume for Christmas or shortly thereafter as OEMs buy up all remaining volume.   Just a heads up.. that 2TB deal for $80 is gone now; 2TB today is over $200 in most places..

Mom asks what SD cards to buy to save her pictures on...I groan inwardly and suggest we get her an external hard-drive and some backup software. Start searching on Amazon and I can't find the affordable USB drives. It's $150 for a 1 TB; what's going on?

Oh, right, the drive shortage. Wow. Prices are up 50%, it seems.

I have no idea what the Windows equivalents of SuperDuper or TimeMachine are. So I set her up with BackBlaze on her laptop. At under $5 / mo, it's easier and initially cheaper than getting a drive and software installed. And this won't require her to plug in at home; it will work no matter where she's at in the house or the country.

I figure in another 2-3 months, the hard drives will fall back down to their pricing pre-flood.

What I find funny is that I don't really see a shortage of hard drives on the shelves, it's not like people are rushing out to buy them at the current higher prices, so they just sit on the shelves collecting dust. I guess the wholesale level is where the price is being spiked by the lower supply of hard drives, and then passed on in the retail channel.

They're predicting not until late 2012 will supply be back to normal. But, the news went on, they're working to cut costs to bring prices back down.
