WINGS (1927) when on DVD?

It has been 8... yes eight long years since we first heard that Paramount was going to do a full restoration release of WINGS (1927) first Academy Award Best Picture film on DVD. There were numerous pushed back dates along the way including a same date as "The African Queen".

Has anyone heard what happened or what is happening with this title... why hasn't it surfaced on DVD outside of Asian bootlegs?

Thanks.

A friend of mine recently participated in an interview as part of a Blu-Ray release coming from Paramount in early 2012. He saw part of the restoration and says "it's stunningly good".

Yes, I've been seeing many hints that Paramount plans a 2012 release of the film on Blu-ray, and likely DVD as well.

I guess I won't have to watch my Thai copy anymore, soon enough! I'll keep the "Making of Wings" Documentary, though.

Great news! I'll be cautiously optimistic.

Yes, very cautious. How long does it take to restore and release a movie? The Laser Disc version wasn't in bad shape so doubt they had all that much to do in the first place but 8-years, come on now.

2012 is Paramount's 100th anniversary so if Wings ever comes to Blu-Ray or DVD, it would come next year, along with any other films made before 2000 that Paramount would ordinarily deem unreleasable.

Guess that makes sense.

Paramount gives a hard release date of January 24, 2012 for both DVD and Blu-ray.  No other details.

Great to see Paramount breaking into its 100th anniversary on such a strong note. I certainly did not expect it so early into the year. I hope this is a sign of things to come.

With Oscar nominations out also January 24th, and the big show on February 26. Paramount has gotten smart by promoting as 100th anniversary and as the first Oscar Best Film.  But I do look forward to some other post 50 Paramount titles in 2012 such as hopefully Samson And Delilah.

OMG! I've been waiting so long. For a film that's never (officially) been on DVD, how great that it's going straight to Blu.

WAHOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is fantastic news! Now I can get rid of my Thai copy, but I will keep the documentary, The Making of Wings, that I made for my film class with it, as it looks like Paramount won't have any extras included. But, if you want to see the film's rerelease trailer, it's pretty easy to find on-line. You know, it's amazing how much you can find on the net about this 85 year old movie!

Being the FIRST best picture winner, and the fact that Wellman's son is a WEALTH of knowledge on the film and wrote a book about it's creation, it's a crying shame they couldn't do a "making of" like I did because the story of the film's creation is AMAZING and incredible.

What a fascinating cover! Is it original artwork or a modern pastiche?
