The normal license period on these sorts of things is three years.

Kind of defeats the appeal of a "LIMITED" Edition if this movie isn't so limited after all.

Well, you're making quite a supposition. Sony won't be releasing this movie next year or anytime soon thereafter. I think it's pretty easy to surmise that the corporate entity known as Sony has simply lost interest in catalog titles, which is why you see them popping up on Twilight Time, Image, and Criterion. So, you can rest easy and enjoy your Blu-ray of Mysterious Island, which, BTW, is still available and not sold out. Hopefully it will be at some point, but for those who predicted the instant sellout and panic - no.

If Sony thought they could make enought money releasing it they would have already.

Finally got a chance to watch Mysterious Island, and it is simply magnificent.  Likewise, 7th Voyage of Sinbad, discussed earlier in this thread.

I've also sneak-previewed my copies of Jason and the Argonauts and Clash of the Titans, and have decided that I could happily bankrupt myself acquiring every BD that faithfully portrays the look of real film like these do.  It appears Mr. Harryhausen in particular is being well served.

I just wondered if anyone is going to buy Picnic. I am happy with my DVD upconvert on my bluray player. I do watch the movie however every Labor Day. The only problem is cost and the fact that William Holden and Kim Novack may look a great deal older in HD. Many people have always spoke out on the age problem of the actors over the years. I never found it to be a big deal but I know some people do.

I worry too about the restoration. MI was the best they could do i understand but it is a great deal of money if I am going to set out to replace all my dvds with blu-ray. I so far next year will be replacing quite a few.

I know they must charge this cost because they are a small company. I love the Egyptian and never regretted the cost. I just wonder how their sales are doing on these movies.

I don't know how old Holden was but I thought he was close to forty in this movie playing a person who was about twenty or so.
Novack was about 22 in the movie so she was fine.
Movie was ridiculously silly and had about ten years of tv soap opera melodrama packed into its runtime.

Would be ripe for a MST3K send up.

Check out Ebert's review, it's pretty funny.

William Holden was 37 when he made this film.

But where does it say that his character should be twenty years old?

He and his best friend Alan,( who has graduated) and they have not seen each other for a long time.

Ergo, they should both be at least over twenty - twenty one.
The thing is, the Holden character still tries to act like he is still in college and is too old for that, as Roz Russell points out to him

I think this is a marvelous film with a wonderful cast.

Exactly. I always pictured the character as someone around 30 who is trying to act like a college boy to hide his own shame. Doesn't it even begin with with him as an ex-college football star who spent some time in military service as well as a Hollywood carreer? No way the would be 20.

I always thought Robertson and Holden's characters were in their late 20s while Novack was in her early 20s.  Either way, Novack would look exactly the character's age on BRD since they were of the same age bracket.

I'm going to buy it because I was very dissatisfied with the way the original Picnic DVD upconverted on my equipment. It looked like a very dated transfer, and I'm betting the Blu-ray will be far, far superior.

I have my doubts about that. The time to strike a new transfer would have been for the release of the Novak set a couple years back- and if that was the case, the improvement was perceptibly minimal over the original release. I didn't sit down and extensively A/B the two discs, but that was my impression. I'm sure the encode was smoother and the digital artifacts lesser- but the film itself didn't seem demonstrably more resolved. However it is a very wide film, and the uptick in resolution is going to be much appreciated with the jump to 1080p. I do expect it to look better, but I'm trying to keep my expectations in check to not be too disappointed. And that's more likely to happen when the prices are at this level.

I'm excited about this release and will definitely be ordering it- although I will be waiting until Bite The Bullet and possibly Major Dundee are available as well so I can order all of them plus Rapture in the same batch and save a couple $ on SAEs inflated shipping.

I didn't buy the last Novak box becuase I didn't want to rebuy discs I already had on DVD yet again, but I thought I had read a review somewhere (DVD Talk, maybe) that the Picnic DVD was a notable upgrade in quality from the original release. I could be wrong. That may have been my own wishful thinking.

Picnic, being an early CinemaScope, film will probably not be particularly sharp. I believe this film was photographed with the original scope adapters that Fox bought from Henri Chrétien, or the early Bausch & Lomb adapters that were based on Chrétien's designs. As a result, depending on which lenses were used, Picnic will likely look somewhat like The Robe or How to Marry a Millionaire, in terms of sharpness.

Again while it won't be particularly sharp, if done correctly the blu-ray should be significantly better than the DVD.

I've preordered PICNIC and THE ROOTS OF HEAVEN, which will be lucky to move 300 units, let alone 3,000. smile.gif

I am actually very happy with the PICNIC transfer on the Kim Novak collection (also with Bell, Book, & Candle) so I will not be going for this one and THE ROOTS OF HEAVEN for some reason just doesn't interest me so pass on that too.  I think you right Bob in that Roots will be a slow mover.

Sorry guys - I need to read a thread entirely before asking a question.  Matt, I see that you already answered my question.  Sorry again.

Are you referring to the disc in the Kim Novak Collection or the original DVD?

The Roots of Heaven might be little known, but it's a marvellous and surprising film, way ahead of it's time in the core message; Flynn is wonderfully touching.

I have both discs and the one released last year in the Kim Novak collection is much better than the 2000 DVD release.
