American Horror Story (FX) - season 1 thread - Page 5

Surprising news: Second season of American Horror Story will feature all new characters, new haunted house.

Some of the season 1 actors may return, but if they do they'll be playing completely different characters. The only carryover is that the same rules of the supernatural apply; ie. no vampires or werewolves or anything of that nature.

They've already demolished the Harmon house sets. The idea is to treat the show as an anthology series, with each season as an independent miniseries from the same writers and creative staff. It also allows them to attract better talent cheaper, because people like Jessica Lange are willing to sign up for 13 episodes, but don't want to make a series commitment.

The house sets for this season have already been struck, to prevent FX having second thoughts.

I'm of two minds about this. The horror aspect was mostly gone after the first couple episodes because the mystery was gone once we knew the rules and the players. Going some place completely new brings the mystery back and in turn allows the horror back. On the other hand, I just spent a season investing in these characters, and the idea that that's all she wrote feels almost like a cancellation. I also wonder whether they'll retreat if the season two cast and setting aren't well received, much like the Halloween series did after Halloween III: Season of the Witch. They really captured lightning in a bottle with this cast. A true anthology show like "The Twilight Zone" doesn't have to catch lightning in a bottle every week, because if one story doesn't work they'll be a new one next week. But when you're making a season long commitment, they're really going to need to capture lightning in a bottle every year.

Adam, you beat me to the punch!

I was a little underwhelmed by the finale.  Almost seemed to be a parody of itself in places.

Pretty interesting news about season 2.  Not sure how I feel about that.  I think it's good in the sense that the house was getting a bit crowded and it will be nice to start fresh.  But if the rules are the same I don't know how fresh it can be.  It seems this show would translate well to the big screen.

So did we ever find out why Moira continued to age even after her death?  And why it seemed only men saw her as she was when she died?

I liked the final episode: a decent life/death for the Harmons where they achieved some peace and happiness; the frantic realtor desperate to sell the house again made me laugh, and that devil kid was really creepy.

I'll reserve judgment on their decision to find a new house and new hauntings until I see how they develop it. I do think the Murder House was so crammed with ghosts now that there would have been just too many underfoot for any new tenants, and since we do know the rules now, much of the surprise and mystery would be gone. I think if we see anyone again, it'll be Jessica Lange and that kid with Dennis O'Hare as an outside possibility.

I'm glad it's turning into an anthology. I couldn't begin to imagine how they'd have maintained interest in the current setup. How many times do you have to get the crap scared out of you before you move out of that house?

Hmmm, I will miss Jessica Lang for sure - she was great in that role.

A new house could be interesting. We'll have to wait and see.

That's who I was expecting it to be, after reading what is now a red herring spoiler. So I was disappointed when it turned out to be someone else.

Not sure what to make of this episode centred on the Rubber Suit Man. Jessica Lange wasn't in it, but then I don't think the show is all about her character. The promo for next week's episode (with the Black Dahlia story being a plotline) promises another promising chapter for the haunted house.

Episode 9 was a very good episode, the 1940's-set teaser was one of the best things I have seen on TV. After The X Files did that episode set in the 1940's in it's fifth season ("Travelers"), seeing a drama/thriller series set in that era was high on my suggestions for a possible future TV series. Liked how the Black Dahlia murder case was combined with the murder house (and the exterior scenes).

Episode 10 was one of the best episodes so far. Not much to fault, and the standout scenes were Violet trying to get out of the house (it reminded me of the X Files episode "Audrey Pauley") and Constance's making mince meat of her husband (this scene was disgusting! Reminded me of the film The Exterminator (1980).

Episode 11 "Birth" moved things along with the storyline of Vivian's expecting twins (very sad the one moment after the birth). But the best scenes were at the end with Violet's conversation with Tate (done really well) and her scene with Vivian. The promo for next week's season finale looks very promising (have a bad feeling about what will happen to Ben).

Just wait for "Afterbirth"....

The season finale "Afterbirth" was easily one of the best episodes in the first season. What happened with Ben was expected, yet what happened from that point onwards was surprising and kind of a happy ending for him, Vivian and Violet. Loved the scene where they and the old maid were decorating the Christmas tree.

On the whole it's been a mostly very good to excellent show. Look forward to seeing what the makers come up with for next season.

Based on your reactions from the previous episodes I thought you were going to like this.  I also really like the Christmas Tree scene.

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

Funny that they couldn't be a happy family until they were all dead.

One of the guest stars in "Afterbirth", who played one of the new residents of the house, I was trying to remember which other TV show I'd seen him in. Wasn't until after I finished watching the episode, that I remembered which show I'd seen him in before. It was actor Anthony Ruivivar, who had been in the main cast of Third Watch.

Great that Zachary Quinto is returning, as he was one of the best of the recurring characters in the first season.

I'm eager to see how these returning actors fit into a new scenario as new people. COuld be brilliant or a car wreck. Can't wait to see the result.

Yeah, that dude's great and Sarah Paulson is always good too so I'm actually pretty interested in seeing them (presumably) have bigger roles next year. I hated the first season of the show but I LOVE that, despite the show being a hit, the producers have got the stones to toss everything and start over. That's the only reason that I'll continue to watch next season.
