My wife and I both had a chance to use our new Nikon 5100 at our son's cross country meet this past weekend. Although we defintely have alot to learn using a DSLR, the camera was relatively easy to use with minimal reading of the users manual.
Most of the shots were taken using the "sports" mode and many using the 4 fps shooting mode. Photos were with the 55-300mm Nikon lens and we both are more comfortable using the viewfinder than the screen.
The main thing I learned by viewing the photos was to zoom in closer to fill more of the frame with the subject (when that is the desire anyway).
A few photos are below.

My son is the one in the glasses in the last two photos. The first photo is the lead vehicle (waiting for the start) that stays ahead of the race leader to make sure they follow the right route. The second photo is of the start of the Freshman/Sophomore boys race - a total of 365 runners - only the middle section is shown.
My son did medal in the meet, finishing 36th out of 186 Freshman runners and 6th on his team. His team swept the four boys races - Freshman, Sophomore, JV, and Varsity, a first for the Kansas City Metro Championships. (It is an all boys Jesuit school, so I guess they were disqualified for the girls races!)
Although a DSLR and more bulky than a small "point and shoot" the 5100 is very easy to get a good photo with and much lighter with the 55-300mm lens than I had expected.
Thanks for all the help in the selection.
Mike
