CLEOPATRA Region Free BRD - Page 4

I've gotten word that Fox won't release "Cleopatra" in the US until later this year or even early 2013 (the actual 50th anniversary). No more missing footage has been found, but they are considering more extras and deluxe packaging.

I'm keeping my pre-order because I really can't wait much longer for my favourite film on Blu. If there's a more deluxe package later this year or next year, then I'll consider buying that, too.

Well, that's just not right.  With Fox, they always seem to release titles in the UK before they get here.  I don't see any reason they cannot be released at the same time.

Do you mean that it is factually incorrect or that you disagree with the decision?

As for myself, I ordered the UK version. I don't see a big downside to this since I believe it will be the same version of the film. Larger sales in the UK will stimulate Fox to move on releasing it here.

Disagree with the decision.  I will more than likely order from the UK also.  Not sure about your thought that larger sales in the UK will stimulate the move to an earlier releasing here.  Fox does what the think is right.  They almost might be holding off since Universal and Paramount have classic titles out every month this year and they do not wish to enter the fight for Blu-ray dollars. But that is just a thought.

Ha, I don't like it! The picture is so much sharper, but far, far too cool for my liking, just look at pictures 6 & 8. Whatever happened to the rich reds from 6, & 8, Cleo's entry into Rome looks downright faded to me. Did they shoot the scene in Manchester in November?

When I saw the film broadcast in HD recently, there did appear to be a slight drop in quality right around that scene; might have been my imagination, but that was my impression.

I'd like to hear what Mr Harris has to say. Although he always warns us not to go by the screen caps, I'd still like to know what he thinks of them.

And he's quite right.

This looks seriously wrong despite all the detail, there is no way this is how Cleopatra is supposed to look.

I wonder what Leon Shamroy would say about these strangely drab and bluish pictures confused.gif

Not the most accurate thing to go by, but these lobby cards from the original US roadshow release show a blueish look to the outdoor scenes:

I never saw lobby cards that ever looked anything like the actual film. I would be very surprised if the BluRay doesn't look gorgeous. I've seen Fox's restoration prints of "Cleopatra", "Hello Dolly!" and "The Sound of Music" numerous times at the American Cinematheque and all three looked incredible. In fact, "The Sound of Music" probably looked the weakest of the three and the BluRay looks stunning. Both Cleo and Dolly should look every bit as good, if not better.

That's good to hear, Rob. You're lucky to have seen Cleopatra on the big screen. I'd kill to!

I think I will have to import this title. When I first heard of an impending release, I halfway expected a half-assed job like Spartacus on Blu-ray. These screenshots look like great to me. I know "better than the DVD' does not necessarily translate to a great Blu-ray; but those screenshots kick the living crap out of the DVD screenshots.

The DVD also appears to be stretched horizontally, sort of like The Big Country.

Wow what a lot of technical stats on that page and oodles of languages to watch it in except, maybe, Latin and all those subtitles!!!!!!

Well we haven't too much longer to wait. Fingers crossed: hopefully Fox will live up to their reputation.

I'm seeing more picture information on all four sides for most of the screen captures.

Any reviews yet?

I pre ordered a copy and if someone does not do so beforehand I will let those interested know how it looks on a large screen when it arrives. So far the only titles I own that have really been impressive are Ben Hur , King Of Kings, and It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. I realize not all films will look quite as good - such as The Egyptian. Great color but not as sharp, although maybe it never was. Just can't beat large format films if transferred properly such as Cleopatra hopefully is.

They seemed to have screwed up the entr'acte for disc two of the film. Someone on the UK forum at Bluray.com says the entr'acte music is at the end of the disc one. They made the same mistake with the DVD. Is another recall in order? If this turns out to be true, I hope the the US release is correct.

Annoying about the overture for the second half being at the end of disc 1, but that's certainly not something that would deter me from buying it. Although I must say, it's completely baffling how things like that get missed.

But yes, they should certainly fix that before releasing it in the US.

Thanks for letting us know, Trajan.

Ugh! I was hoping that they would fix that mistake for blu-ray. Maybe that's part of the reason it is not being released in the U.S. right now?

Oh my god, that is beyond annoying!  I remember that same situation on a 2-tape VHS set of Lawrence of Arabia.  I hated it from the moment I first watched that set, till the day -- a decade or so later -- that I was able to toss it when I got my first DVD player.  It didn't look to me like there was any excuse for that then, but it would be totally reprehensible now.

I agree. This ruins the roadshow experience.

I don't believe it - after that same mistake on the DVD (although at least Fox sent me the corrected replacement region 1 DVD even though I'm in the UK).
No one can be serious that they think the AWFUL color on the DVD as compared to the Blu-ray in those caps looks better??? I hate caps and would never go by them, but in looking at the before and after here, the Blu-ray caps are entirely accurate, color-wise. If the Blu actually looks that good, I'm going to be VERY happy.

The color on the DVD caps is disgustingly wrong and it's obvious any time you mouse over both images and look.

You would think that they would learn from past indiscretions.
