Saturday Night Live Season 37 - Page 3

Maybe the best ep of the season.  Quite a few laughs.   Zooey actually has a hell of a voice in that opening number; and her protest of MIA's flipping the bird was very funny - inventing the rubber band :)   It did have my least favorite sketch (the french dancing sketch, which I have always found terrible), but the repeated different versions of the Clint Eastwood car commercial were dead on "it's 4th quarter now".. :)

Nic Cage showing up was hilarious. It takes a lot to come on and do a skit about making fun of your acting persona...not that there's any denying it, at this point.

"All dialogue must be either whispered or screamed."

Points also to Elliott's Zooey, and Zooey's Mary-Kate. "I'm a billionaire."

Actually, the only thing I thought was funny was Nicolas Cage. He's been made fun of so much on SNL, it was shocking that he took it up front. What's up with his career, anyhow?

Yep, another ho-hum show, host, and musical guest. About the only highlight for me was the 1940's newspaper office sketch.

Best episode of the season since the Melissa McCarthy show.

Can we now offically retire "Les Jeunes de Paris?" Seems like there's nowhere left to go on that one.

Then again, I might keep tuning in for "Les Jeunes" as long as Nasim keeps flashing those legs. It's the only time she gets to play anything besides a child or an old lady.

Amazingly, there weren't even any jokes in the recent skit.  It was just a badly performed dance number.

I thought the bit was pretty good made better with the appearance of the star of The Artist.

He's down to 3-4 movies a year, it seems.

Checking it out online. Nic and Nic is awesome. I also really like Zooey Deschanel's singing voice.

However, top honors have to go to Tightrope Guy. Holy crap was that funny!

Those who liked Zooey's singing, have you listened to her She & Him albums?

No. How are they? I wasn't really sure from her brief song on SNL whether she's a good singer; I just thought that she had a good voice. smile.gif

As expected, kinda quirky and folky. I like the second album better than the first. She has great tone in her voice. I took notice when she sang in "Elf." I had a chance to see her perform live at the Hollywood Bowl two years ago. She gave a great live show too.

Maya Rudolph was okay, Amy Pohler was good, but who is Bon Iver? I swear, I didn't know who he was when the applause started. He was on there twice-- he must have been there for something.confused.gif
post #75 of 129
I am sure the applause was for Justin Timberlake who was playing Bon Iver and the boom operator. At least that is what I think. I am only 98% sure it was Timberlake.

Two very good episodes of SNL in a row.  Liked pretty much every sketch last night, and both the the Maya Angelou prank show and How's He Doin'? had me roaring.

I was wondering if they were going to figure out how to incorporate Maya's Whitney impression into the show as a tribute, but I guess it was too soon.

"No, Brother West. It was an act...of whimsy."

The Maya Angelou prank-show was great, and I had gotten sick of "Bronx Beat" long ago, until it was saved last night by such a filthy turn by Samberg and JT, but 2.5 good sketches is more than I expect on the occasions I tune in to SNL these days, so good show, I suppose.

I always thought Poehler suffered a bit in comparison to Tina Fey on "Update," but stacked up against the Seth Meyer solo-show, she looks like a total icon.

Don't know what the hell was going on with the "Super Showcase" sketch, and they might as well just play extra commercials rather than doing "What's Up With That?" -- it would make them more money, and would have a better chance at getting an actual laugh out of me.

And goddamn...Sleigh Bells?? What the fuck has been up with the musical guests this season? It's like they're intentionally finding the absolute worst acts out there, and then trashing them on the following week's episode.

I'm pretty sure they didn't "trash" Lana Del Ray, seeing as how, you know, they specifically defended her on Weekend Update.

Also, while I acknowledge that music awards are mostly viewed as completely irrelevant, didn't Bon Iver just win a few major Grammys last week?  I don't think they qualify as one of the absolute worst acts out there (though Lana Del Ray might, I agree).

Musically, this season has actually been pretty strong, with a lot of major artists appearing, including Radiohead, Lady Antebellum, Maroon 5, Coldplay, The Black Keys, and Michael Buble.  I don't dig ever week's music guest, but this season (and last season) had more wins than loses, for me.

Yep, Bon Iver was the Best New Artist at last week's Grammys, and might have won a couple others (I'm not sure).

Yeah, I was hoping to see her Whitney, too, but as you say, probably too soon. Shoop!

They must be having a hard time getting decent hosts this season. We just had to endure Channing Tatum, now we'll have Lindsay Lohan hosting on March 3.

It was definitely Timberlake.

Typically I start watching SNL after the news then go off to do other things halfway though. This one had me the entire show. Loved the Maya Angelou skit.

Honestly, I'd never heard of Bon Iver before he won the Grammy.

I feel really stupid about Justin Timberlake. You know, they really look alike, though. I just wasn't thinking about him at all on the show. The show was pretty funny.

The Lana Del Rey skit was kind of schizophrenic -- some of the cracks were clearly poking fun at her, but they also seemed to be defending her.

I call Tina Fey showing up tonight to "support" Lohan.
Real Housewives of Disney was hilarious.

Lindsay flubbed a few lines, but no train wreck. I know people give her shit for reading (badly) the cue-cards, but Walken does even worse with them. "The Help" joke was a high-point, because it actually hammered home what-could-have-been. Though I don't think Lohan was ever as talented as Emma Stone.

Will say, that cold opening (psycho Shepard Smith, Kid Rock's "song," Romney's creepy Stepford-offspring) was one of the best they've done in, like, forever.

The only thing that saved the "Scared Straight" sketch was Sudeikis, et al breaking up at the very end.

This needs to return with a different female host.

She seemed to have issues with the cue cards in general, but the low point was the Scared Straight sketch.  She stared directly at the cue cards and didn't even bother faking any eye contact.  And she still flubbed every single line.  I've seen Charles Barkley handle his lines better.  My favorite part of that sketch was the line about stealing a necklace.  That was the only thing not lifted from a movie plot.

The best parts were The Real Housewives and the monolog.  And yes, that was the best cold open based on the Republican primaries.

The Scared Straight sketch (or, more accurately, Lohan's reading) was just bizarre. The necklace bit was lifted from her real life, wasn't it? smile.gif

Real Housewives of Disney was genius. I agree, they should make that a recurring sketch.

I will admit that I chuckled at "Weird Guy By The Fire."

What would have made it even better is if they didn't feel the need to use a placard and voiceover to explain the joke to me. Just a long shot of Sudeikis tending the fire with his back to the audience before cutting to the next sketch would have been perfect.

Bill Hader continues to be the SNL MVP: "Don't ask me how, but I know some alligators."

And am I the only one having a difficult time remembering when an SNL Digital Short wasn't completely terrible? Because the last one I remember liking was "Jack Sparrow," and that feels like close to a full year ago, now.
