They are not going to change their mind anymore than we will change ours.  We grew up on the back three and they grew up on the front three and their movie memories are of those.  Seeing the films in a multiplex with big screens and Dolby EX sound with their friends is what is burned in their minds.  While we saw it in big to small screens in singles, twins and quads and boy were we excited to see it in Dolby Stereo, they actually had a better experience than we had.  We were also awed with the special effects that was unlike any we had ever seen before that time.  They grew up on CGI and digital effects that we had no idea existed in 1977.  That is why the front three will always be special to them, they created the same memory we had only with different episodes.

I'm still thinking this could be a setup as the greatest marketing ploy ever.

How,you may ask ?

First,antagonize all the fans,the ones not getting the originals,and even the one who buy the damn thing
by giving them a subpar product,and not one that shouldve been done with the highest standards of the format.

So everyone goes grumble grumble and holds a grudge for a number of years,then turn
around and give them exactly what they've been waiting even longer to have.

Boom.Sales from Earth,Tatooine,Endor,etc....

Or,it could simply Occam and his sharp razor again and he's just lost his Jedi marbles.

When I was a kid, and saw Star Wars in 77, many of my older brothers friends thought Star Wars was crap, because it wasn't 2001.

I agree that the prequels will be for the younger generation much like the originals have been for us who grew up on those.  And to be fair, it's really hard to blame them for that, if at all.

 

Honestly, if I (or most anyone else) really want to critique the OT, it will fall apart in certain ways, but we grew up on them, and we love them in ways that are probably relatively unique to our generation.  And it will probably be likewise for them and the prequels as well.

 

And I think the fact I bothered to buy the prequels on DVD before and has just about committed on this BD set now indicates that I've more or less given up on trying to convince my own son which is (far) superior and whether he's missing out (all that much) on the true OT or not.  I should probably just let him enjoy the franchise for what he has come to know of it himself rather than push my own agenda and SW-world-view on the matter -- afterall, this is really still just a hobby at the end of the day, especially when it comes to something like SW.  Heck, I'm even starting to find myself being less and less annoyed by the prequels, including the formerly much despised TPM and that most annoying of CGI character whose name shall be unmentioned herewith (at least for now ).

 

 

As for if/when Lucas will ever release the true OT on BD w/ worthy, top quality transfers, I sure hope so, but I probably won't be holding my breath for that at this point...

I don't agree. I think something like the Harry Potter movies will be the younger generation's touchstone. The prequels will be for them what the 70s Buck Rogers is for me - I still have a certain affection for it because of when I saw it, but it's really pretty terrible.

Return Of The Jedi fits into that category as well. Well, ROJ is not terrible but it's certainly nowhere near level of the first two and it's only remembered as fondly it is because it rides the coattails of Star Wars, Empire and childhood nostalgia.

 

Yes, I'd greet w/ that to some extent.  The original point wasn't meant to be some sort of all-encompassing comparison, but merely w/in the context of the SW universe.  However, if you're gonna be nitpicky and include stuff outside the SW universe, I'd say equating the SW prequels to Buck Rogers might be a slight bit of a low blow.   You may feel that way (and I might too for that matter), but you are *not* part of that generation though and might be letting your own feelings/biases push that comparison further than need be...

 

Only time will I tell I guess...

I think you are underestimating how big the prequel movies are for the 20 something generation. My nephew and his friends feel about the prequels very much the way I did about the originals when I was their age.

Interestingly however my enthusiasm for Star Wars has dimmed a good deal, not unlike what you are saying about Buck Rogers.
