The Muppets - Page 2

One joke I didn't get: who is the Muppet Man? It felt like a reference to a previous appearance, but I've not seen "him" or forgotten him since.

I think they were concerned that it would "go too far" and that jokes would be "cheap" etc... but looking at the final product, it was none of that.   It was about as true to the muppets as I think it could be; and far more in line with Henson's vision then say, Muppets from Space.

As to the thought "Kermit wouldn't live in a mansion"  that's just ridiculous.   That's arguing with a plot device.   Kermit played an up-and-coming mogul/accountant in Muppets Take Manhattan; his goal in The Muppet Movie AND Muppets Take Manhattan was to become famous and successful (that's why they signed the "Standard Rich and Famous Contract" at the end of the Muppet Movie)

I don't know.. sometimes it just gets taken too far.. I thought the whole thing was brilliant stuff.

Do you mean

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

The human version of Walter? He's played by Jim Parsons, who has won back-to-back comedy Emmys on The Big Bang Theory.

He's just a clever cameo. Nothing more than that.

No, I mean The Muppet Man, as in

Miss Piggy: "I can't believe I was fooled by The Muppet Man!"

One thing about this movie that I found interesting is that it reminded me of the movie theater bookends of The Muppet Movie and the behind the scenes parts of The Muppet Show. This film has the Muppets not playing characters, as they have been in all the films or their sketches on TV, but as the performers themselves. We see Kermit as himself, not Kermit as "Kermit," telling "approximately how the Muppets got started" or playing a reporter, an aspiring Broadway performer, characters from literature, etc. It's like they were playing themselves for the first time.

It's like The Sting. She's fooled by a trick she should know as an insider.

The idea of (what they do to get in to see Miss Piggy) is at least as old as vaudeville, (usually done by kids) and a gag the Muppets themselves have used before. I don't recall it being specifically referred to as "muppet man" but yes as a Muppet, with their shared history, Piggy should generally have known better, and that's what she means by that line.

Although some of them were odd choices (James Carville?) and some were obviously under contract to Disney and its subsidiaries (Whoopi Goldberg, Selena Gomez, Rico Rodriguez), they worked for me.

I liked the fact Kermit had no idea who Rico Rodriguez was.  To paraphrase: "Whoopi Goldberg??!!  Selena Gomez??!!  Uh, hit!"

^ Big thumbs up to that kid (and his manager, agent, parents) for having enough of a sense of humor to go with that joke.

I meant "hi", not "hit", BTW! redface.gif

I roared at the Rico Rodriguez joke. I took it as a play on most kids these days wouldn't know who Kermit was (my kids certainly didn't).

I thought it was a delight. Loved everything about it. My kids enjoyed the cameos (my oldest nearly leapt out of his seat when Donald Glover walked into the room, he hasn't seen much of Community but what he has he's loved). Judd Hirsch answering the phones at the telethon was so completely random. And I loved that not only was the music written by Bret McKenzie, but the songs were performed in a very Flight of the Conchords way (in particular Man or Muppet).

Finally caught up with this today. I really wanted to see it in the theater but missed it in all the local theaters around the holidays. Found it was still playing at one theater about 70 miles away, so I made a road trip. It was still drawing a decent matinee crowd, given that it's been in theaters for nearly 3 months. Funny that the crowd was 90% adult, as well.

I really enjoyed it and agree with many here that this is the best Muppet movie in ages. Segel really showed some love for the subject and characters. I was a little skeptical about the whole "lets get the gang together again to save the theater" plot. It just seems like a been-there-done-that story, even if the Muppets have not specifically done that before (I think that was the plot of "The Country Bears," which I associate with Muppets, so maybe that's where the similarity lies in my mind). But it was pretty well done. I just wished there were more of the actual Muppet Show-type of acts at the end. Chris Cooper's rap/song also seemed kind of cheesy and out of place, but overall it was a wonderful, nostalgic trip back in time. smile.gif

Gosh, 70 miles to see the Muppets! (quoting Animal) "dat my kind of fella!" Not surprised at the adult heavy audience. Maybe Country Bears movie reminds you of Muppets because the Henson company did the animatronic costume heads. You should have seen them work live (live concert after every show at the El Capitan). Same technology Henson co. used on the uberclever Dinosaurs show. I agree about Cooper's rap and more Muppet show acts, but SO much of the movie was really laugh out loud funny. 80s Robot, the sight gag as Kermit walks up, not knowing who the kid from Modern Family is... Love that the celebrity cameos were all matter of fact rather than stopping the show. i was ready to buy the BR disc when the movie started. Also, like The Artist, if you live in LA and have spent any time at the studios, between the backlots and real locations, it's like a home movie. Also glad Disney didn't insist on putting this in 3D.

Well it was a very good evening's entertainment The Muppets. On first viewing it wasn't as good as The Muppet Christmas Carol and The Great Muppet Caper, but it had it's moments. Loved the "maniacial laugh" bits and the Man or Muppet song. There wasn't as much of the Swedish Chef and Statler and Waldorf as I would have liked, but it was worth the wait when the Muppets were gradually introduced.

The only part I could say which wasn't good at all was Chris Cooper's rap song. The other songs were fine to excellent.

Looking forward to the Blu-ray release.
