Time for an AppleTV?

I've now got a new iMac and would like to stream my a/v resources from my Mac to my HT. I want to stream my audio mp3s and movies and videos I might have. Now that I've dropped Netflix, I'm interested in other ways to rent movies.

Since I have an iMac is the ATV automatically the best way for me to go? What are my options?

I have never streamed anything to my HT nor have I seen what it looks like. I don't expect blu ray quality but how close will it be to broadcast HD? I'm watching the NFL on DTV right now which looks fine. Will ATV be close?

ATV will integrate smoothly, but it currently is only 720p. I am going to hold out for the next rev, which will hopefully stream 1080p.

When is 1080 expected?

The rumor is the next version of Apple TV will arrive with iOS 5. So in the next few weeks in theory.

So far, the iTunes Store only supports 720p. There would have to be a change in their offerings if a 1080p ATV were released.

I don't know what Netflix offers resolution wise, but integration with ATV is a selling point.

There is a Roku device that supports 1080p, but it does not support iTunes.

The thing I like about even the current ATV is that it streams iTunes. I have a large music library, and would like to stream it to my home theater.

What can you access with the AppleTV? Besides iTunes and what's on my PC. Can I do Netflix and the other online services?

That was an interesting article. I'l definitely wait for 1080.

Apple TV does include Netflix and a few others but no Amazon. :(

I'm waiting for the version capable of 1080p. I thought it would have been announced with the iPod/iPhone since it is a iOS device. Does that mean we have to wait until April or even worse next Oct??

Will there be aTV3 under the Christmas Tree?

I'm a bit intrigued by it as an addition to my system.

I would be shocked to see it this year...

Marco lays out why the dumb description that hack news guys are predicting for such an Apple TV is all wrong for Apple:

One such dumb news (Herman Munster) guy predicts it for 2013 (yawn):
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-10-24/apple-effort-to-develop-tv-is-said-to-be-led-by-itunes-creator-jeff-robbin.html

The Frome thinks on it a bit too:

I'm not convinced any of the thoughts are on the right track... I'd love for Marco to be right but then I'd be spending $1000+ on a kick ass TV i can't play my XBox games on (maybe HDMI to Airplay converters?)

Double or triple that. A 60" AppleTV will cost  $2000+, based on high-end pricing by Sony and Samsung.

I don't see Apple making big-screen TV sets until they're out of iOS ideas. It's an expensive, infrequent purchase. And it's all about the content, which they're getting serious pushback on from the studios. The "experience" isn't what really needs fixing, it's getting the shows. And Apple clearly hasn't licked that, as seen from their mediocre iTunes options for TV and movies.

You must be new here. The first two sizes will be 24 and 40 inches. Guaranteed!

(meta rumors muahahaha)

24" TV? Apple doesn't even sell a monitor that small. I guess that size TV might fit in your pockets, to watch during the daily commute...

Well, there ya go. It's coming. Sure to be here in the next 26 months. I look forward to shouting at my TV to change channels instead of clicking the remote.

Is TV control really a problem? I don't have issues pushing the volume button or going up or down a channel. What I do have problems with is NBC starting its shows 1 minute early, so I miss the opening joke. And CBS starting its shows 43 minutes late due to sports delays, and Tivo not recording my show. Or PBS being a full season behind in showing Dr. Who. Or Futurama downloadable episodes being a ridiculous $3 per episode.

Nothing about talking to my TV solves the real problems with TV. So I guess I shouldn't be skeptical of Apple tackling another consumer electronics market to grow the business. But I can't imagine what they're bringing to it that really solves the problems.

But I'm edge case, since I've got 5 channels, not 500 :)

Talking to your TV is the dumbest idea ever.

Zig or zag? Maybe it's just the next Mac Mini implementation =p

Noobdy else is on this guy's level. Smart yes but also contemplative and ingenious.
