DSLR Recommendation - Page 2

Kenko makes some decent products (I own one of their 1.4x teleconverters), but that still looks like a low-end budget filter. Michael's suggestion of Hoya or B+W are good ones, if you really feel you must use a protective filter. I personally own Hoya UV and CPL filters, but as a mentioned earlier in this thread, I really dislike using UV filters at all for protection. They can never improve your picture quality -- at best, they will not degrade it enough to be noticed. At worst, they can noticeably degrade image quality and cause flare or focusing issues. I just do not like the idea of putting a cheap piece of glass in front of a quality lens. Under most conditions, a lens hood should be all you need for protection.

As Michael mentioned, though, you can always try it, and if you do not like the filter you are only out $20, so it's not the end of the world.

Getting back to positive comments, enjoy your new camera, and let's see some photos!

Nice buy. I have no personal experience with the 55-300mm lens, but a friend of mine uses it for some time and likes it. Good choice.

A UV-filter is nothing but a very thin piece of glass. It will not easily harm your image (except very occasional reflections, like I had with one particular lens). In that case, a more expensively coated one might be in order. I wouldn't worry about those cheap filters, until you really notice any rare problem caused by the filter, and if a pointed object makes a scratch on or even crashes your filter but spares your much more expensive lens, you'll be happy to have taken the precaution.

Hope for you your wife will let you play with it occasionally!  smile.gif

Scott,

Yet, that's exactly the idea behind it, IMO: protecting your investment.

Here's a recent article on the topic of protective filters from a photographer who has to contend with the occasional bodily fluid spray: http://ishootshows.com/2011/09/07/using-filters-as-lens-protection/

That 14-24/2.8 is an awesome lens. Definitely on my wish list.

I was aware of a little double entendre.

Have fun any way.  laugh.gif

I have it, it's great but not always practical. I've been waiting 3 years to afford a full frame camera to put it on, and a year for a D700 replacement now that I'm close to funding such a purchase!
