Still no word on extras. frown.gif

The Digital Bits just reported today that it's barebones. frown.gif

Lame, Disney, lame!!!

Further proof that Disney is perhaps the worst studio when it comes to their product on dvd/blu-ray. Definitely makes me question whether I want to purchase now. And labeling it a 20th anniversary edition just doesn't seem right without even a smattering of extras.

Not happy about the news of no extras, but still can not wait to replace my DVD copy.

I fully expected the Blu-ray to be barebones. I'd enjoy some special features, of course, but a nice, new HD transfer is enough for me--I'll definitely be picking it up.

I second Carl.  I am so there with this.  Thank God its an anniversary or I don't think we would be seeing it this soon on Blu-ray.

Speak for yourself-I loved the extras that Disney put on the Tron/Tron Legacy 4-disc DVD/Blu-Ray DVD combo set. Maybe there wasn't much to remember about The Rocketeer to justify the cost of big set of extras, and besides, the movie is what matters, not the extras (half of the info for most of these extras can be found by reading magazines like Starlog and Cinefantastique, which talked about the movie before or as it came out.)

How hard would it be to include an audio commentary? Joe Johnston loves this film, he would do one within a heartbeat, I would reckon. Or what about already existing features? Was there anything included on the Laserdisc?

Well, it would cost something. Those things don't record themselves, they would need a booth, a tech, and it would depend if Johnson's promotional period on his contract is still in effect, i.e. he'd do it for free, or if they'd have to pay him. He might agree to do it for free, but his agents who make a living taking their share from his fees might not appreciate it.

It's the movie that matters, and so long as it looks great, that's all I need. Can't wait.

- Theatrical trailer (included on both DVD and laserdisc)
- Rocketeer: Excitement in the Air (The Disney Channel documentary hosted by Billy Campbell that was broadcast two days prior to the theatrical release; not your typical "making of" special, more of a companion tie-in special. This remains commercially unavailable.)
- D23 screening event hosted by Kevin Smith was recorded for future use (per Mark Cappelletty's post in the other thread).

According to this article there were tons of extras produced for The Rocketeer over 10 years ago:
Quote:
For the 10th anniversary of The Rocketeer, Stevens was involved in helping put together a “spectacular package” of extras including restoring many of the scenes that had been cut from the film as well as behind the scenes footage.

After Stevens helped prepare the package for the DVD release, the Disney Company decided not to include any of it. By the way, thanks to creative Hollywood accounting, Stevens did not receive one dime from the release of the film to television, VHS or DVD. It was money that I am sure he could have used in his last days fighting leukemia.

(Based on that last paragraph, you can all go back to hating Disney, now. rolleyes.gif)

And Disney assembled basically the whole cast plus Joe Johnston at the El Capitan theater just a few months ago for a 20th anniversary screening. They could easily have filmed the on-stage panel for the Blu Ray, and it would have been child's play to improvise a recording booth on site to get either a group or individual commentary tracks. (Hell, stick 'em in the projection booth, which is soundproofed, and let them watch the DVD on a set of headphones while recording the track(s).) This is something I actually suggested in an e-mail to Disney (also posted to the D23 fan site) weeks before the event, when no one even knew a Blu Ray was in the works.

There's just no excuse for a barebones release at this point.

Regards,

Joe

Got this one in the player right now - it's pretty solid!  Can't say it's flawless but it's strong in terms of pic and audio.

Still stinks that we don't have extras, but the movie's clearly never looked or sounded better - I think everyone's gonna be happy with the presentation...dance.gif
