Unread post count

This is a complaint about "unread post count" which is a FARCE,
The thread about star wars ( http://www.hometheaterforum.com/forum/newestpost/313950)
This thread expands circa 50-100 posts per day! I was away for a few days and when I returned, there were then circa 100 unread posts. I normally don't have the time to look at 100 posts  (or as is now 456 posts!!!) in one sitting. What I did was to look at the first 20-30 post , say that were on page 11. I did not go to page 12. I then clicked after  reading the 20-30 posts. hit go to home page.  I then saw that instead of having circa 70-80 to read there were only circa 6 or 7!!! The next time I look at this thread - I would go near the end - certainly not page 11 or page 12. It used to be this way and was "fixed" or "improved".. I don't think that I must record where I was for next time. Easier might be a "set-last read" option so that I can return to my real last post read. This is for the case where there are alot of posts not just a few,

Just so I understand before I dig into it,  you are saying that when you come back to a thread that has 100 new posts (all numbers are for example), and you read one page of new posts (30) and leave the rest for later that it should still show that you have 70 posts and take you back to where you left off?

That's what I took away from his post Adam.

When that happens to me--and the Star Wars thread is a good example as I have been away and there are currently 187 unread posts in the thread for me to go through--I just remember that I have read all the posts through page 11 (to continue Sumner's example) and that when I have time to return I will need to begin on Page 12.  Not that difficult.

This is actually one area in which the Huddler software is a clear improvement over the vb bulletin software.

I remember with the old software that every time I went to my personal home page (which contained my index of subscribed threads), I HAD to read all the unread posts because if I left after reading only some...when I returned ALL the unread posts I neglected were now no longer unread...but only those "new" unread posts would be highlighted.  That was one of the first things I noticed about the Huddler software.  Even though I haven't been able to read all my subscribed threads which have new posts, even though I log out they are still marked as new posts when I return.

I did further tests which confirms my previous post.

"Lucasfil on Star wars... (http://www.hometheaterforum.com/forum/newestpost/314096)

On my home page:  Red was 16 Total 434
I clicked and got post 420 of 435 on page 14. I did not go to page 15
I returned to home page - was "blue" - red was blank
I clicked and got post 435 of 435 on page 15 (the last entry)

"Chance to talk to Lucasfilm .... (http://www.hometheaterforum.com/forum/newestpost/313950)
on circa Friday, I accidendly clicked this post (red was circa 450) and immediately went back to my home page

Yesterday  On my home page Red was 65 Total 1034
I clicked got post 988 of 1035 on Page 33
I returned to my home page. Red was blank and entry was not blue
I clicked again and got  post 1035 of 1035 (the last entry) on p-35
so in a few days I went from circa 450 unread entries to "all read". At the very least when I return to my home page - clicking the next time should take me to the last entry read  or the top of the next page which is not the case. It takes me to the very last entry

I'm not sure how the software is supposed to "know" or "remember" which posts you don't read after you've opened a thread.

===========================

Let's say you create a thread.  You return the next day to find 40 new posts (popular thread!).

You open the thread but only read posts 2 through 20.  You exit the thread (for whatever reason).  When you come back (whether it is right away or the next day), the software is currently going to assume you have read posts 1 thru 40.  This is the way the Huddler software has always worked.  [As I noted before, the vb bulletin software was less responsive in this regard.  It used to be that if you were away from the forum for a week and opened your index page of subscribed threads and didn't read all your new posts in one sitting and left, there was no way to return and find out which threads you hadn't yet accessed.  You had to read it all before you logged out of the forum.]

It seems to me that it would be mighty advanced for the software to know that you had only read up to post #20 and that it should prompt you as such.

Assuming you use the default setting of 30 posts per page, I'm not sure the software could even recognize how many pages you have accessed.  And even if it could, it would still not accomplish what you desire--to have it remember which posts you haven't read and automatically returning you to that spot when next you return.

I would like to write more  but I am busy with other things. I can see Mike's point but I think it is poor if there are alot of posts in a short time - such as Star Wars that alot of people do not have time for look at a large number of posts. I would highly recommend an option where I can specify what post to start on next time such as where the "current" post. In my case there have been many posts and I have "lost" circa 400 posts. I don't think that I would have to note my own "last" post in one of my computer files.. I don't think this is a rare example. As stated earlier, the "last post read" is a farce. I should be able to indicate what my "last post" is. Currently I think it is poor design. I think if there are about over 30 unread posts say 50, most people will not have time to read them all in one sitting.
