Some zoo pics

We went to the NC Zoo yesterday. First time we've been in almost 30 years. It's different now. I took a lot of pics, but of course, only a few of them were good ones. Here's some of my favorites. Can you tell that I like the cougar? We had fun!

1. A Peregrine Falcon. Fastest animal on the planet. Dives at speeds of 200 mph.

2. Of course it was sleeping.

3. Was a little uneasy with him licking his chops, while looking at me!

4. Three more cougar pics......... How can you not love a face like the third one?

Hey, Ed.

I like that yawn... looks like that cougar could use some teeth whitening... smiley_wink.gif biggrin.gif

RE: the falcon, was that shot thru some plexi-glass or something?  Seems like there was either some smudges blurring parts of the photo or maybe a slight bit of lens flare?  How far away was the falcon?  Maybe it's far enough that the blur is actually from some other stuff (like cage bars/fencing/cabling/etc) being thrown OOF, but not quite enough to completely disappear?  Do they keep the falcon out in a fairly wide open area or just some closed up "cage"?  Curious since you mentioned it's the fastest animal w/ that kind of diving speed... but this one might not be allowed to do anything remotely close to that...

Thanks for sharing...

PS: How's your Sammy DLP doing?  Mine seems to have suffered the seemingly common issue of dead/fried red LED after ~2.5 years. frown.gif  Yet another strike against Samsung (even though this issue seems fixable enough at moderate cost). furious.gif thumbsdown.gif

The falcon was in a large fenced in area, with thick plexiglass where you look in, if I remember correctly, with some kind of strong netting overhead so it couldn't fly away. At each animal's exhibit, they had a sign telling some facts about the animal. That's where I got the info about the diving speed. In the zoo, I'm afraid it's not got enough room to dive for food. It was well over my head, looking kinda stately, but the zoom lens brought it in to me pretty well.

The cougar needs to change it's brand of toothpaste alright. smile.gif
The top right fang was broke off. Can't tell so well from this pic though. It was so hot that about all the animals that were outside were very lazy. Never saw the rhino. It stayed where it was cool. The lion was lying in the shade, but looked up at us. The polar bear never moved. He just slept. Another lady there, at another area of the zoo later in the day, asked if we saw the polar bear. I to9ld her yes, but it slept the whole time. She said it really put on a show for them. It swam and played in the water. It had a ball it played with too. We checked back by before we left, and of course, it was asleep again.
Here's another couple of pics:

I forgot to tell about the tv. So far it's still doing great! I'm loving it. I've not seen anything else to compare to it.
A friend from another forum came by one Saturday, a few weeks ago, for a visit. He couldn't believe how good my rear projection set looked. He mentioned how good the blacks were, great off axis picture, and how much it looked like film instead of video. It made me feel good................ smile.gif
I hope it stays this way for another ten years or so.

You got some great portrait shots there, Ed. I would suggest not waiting 30 more years before making your next trip. smiley_wink.gif

We've been making at least one trip a year since I bought a DSLR several years ago. This year we purchased an annual membership to the Detroit Zoo and have made three trips so far. It's a nice way to spend a morning, walking around on a pleasant day, taking photos and viewing the animals.

Thanks. smile.gif
That would be nice, but with my COPD I can't do all that walking anymore. On this trip, I had to rent an electric wheelchair from the zoo ($25) to get around. Much too hilly for me to walk it. Also, it's about 6 miles of walking, to go through the whole place. It's also a three hour drive from home to get there (Kinda felt like Gilligan on the three hour tour). I would like to go again, when it's cooler. A lot of the animals weren't active at all, because of the heat.

Well, I fixed the issue almost 2 weeks ago myself -- but haven't gotten around to updating my dead quiet thread on it -- so hopefully, I won't run into more trouble w/ it for years to come.  The red LED part ended up costing only ~$90 (from a wholesale parts dealer in Amazon Marketplace).  Although I originally thought it'd be easier to replace than a color wheel (that I also did for my in-laws' older Sammy DLP), I wasn't familiar w/ the process/technique of applying thermal compound (needed between the LED part and its mondo, extended heatsink) *and* realized last minute that I should probably do some extra checking before doing the replacement, so it ended up being a fair bit more effort to replace than a color wheel.

Some folks over in AVS started talking about maybe keeping a stash of the more commonly problematic parts, including the main board, (in case parts do become too scarce), but I'm thinking if the set becomes so troublesome as to need a number of repairs w/in the next couple years or so, then maybe it's time to look for something else anyway -- in my case, I may just revisit the idea of going FP since I plan on moving w/in the year and will likely have a better, dedicated room for FP setup...

Cheers!
