2012 National Meet Input Wanted! - Page 2

Awesome! Sarah and I had a great time last meet, especially with our fellow carpool mates Sam, Frank, Phoebe and Andy!

Best,

Joe

Hey Joe,

I hope you guys can work it out to go. We had such a great time hanging out with all our carpool buddies, too!

Sam,
I've already signed us up. Looking forward to seeing you again! Maybe we can make some runs to Fry's together:). You know, that's the only Fry's I've been in. I really liked the sci-fi theme.

I firmly endorse the Hard Rock idea, that room that we had last time was the bomb for being able to get up and meet other HTFers.
Hi Adam,

I thought I'd give some input to your questions that you posted at the beginning of the thread. As a preface, I would like to thank you and the others for working so hard on this. We really appreciate the effort.

What have you like best?

I like visiting the studios best. While at the studios, I liked:
  • Seeing the back lot. This was really a highlight for us.
  • Paramount was great for seeing the back lot.
  • Disney was great for seeing the original studio buildings.
  • Hearing a presentation on film restoration and seeing how it is done at Warner Brothers. That was very fascinating and very enjoyable.
  • Visiting Todd AO was fascinating as well.
  • Hearing about the latest products/technology, Panasonic being a good example.

What have you liked least?
  • The Microsoft Loft: I don't know why, but it just didn't float my boat. It was OK.
  • Going to Universal Theme Park was great fun and I wouldn't mind going there (or to the Anaheim parks) again. But given a choice, if there is one, we would like to see more of the actual working Universal Studio than the theme park. That being said, if seeing more of the Universal Studios work area is not an option, then going to the park is just fine. (I realize you worked really hard in 2008 to get us complimentary admission into the park. I do appreciate all that effort and for the record: we had a blast).

Was the Burbank Marriott a good hotel/location?
  • Yes. It work great for us.

What would you like to do that hasn't been done?
  • See more sites of interest. Those who went early to see the Kimball taping were able to see a little bit of Grauman's Chinese Theater and the surrounding area. That was really neat.
  • It would be neat to actually plan visiting there or other places of interest. Maybe we could take the tour of Grauman's and/or take in a movie there or across the street at El Capitán. Seeing some of the old movie palaces or historical places associated with the movies would be grand. (I'm just throwing out some ideas).
  • I like what Andy suggested about visiting Bronson Canyon.
  • I also like what Cameron suggested about a community event.

Should we have more "technical" events ((post production, sound design, disc authoring, etc.)?
  • That would be great.

How long should it last?
  • The way you have it now is good. However, if you could start on Saturday instead of Sunday, then maybe Sunday could be used to go to Universal Theme Park or visit sites of interest like Grauman's, etc.

Should there be more free days?
  • Yes, if that would be the only way to see and do some of the things I listed above (going to Grauman's and other places of historical interest).
  • No, if you add more days to the event as suggested above (start on Saturday instead of Sunday).

We seem to do some of the same things every meet when it comes to studio tours, etc. Do you guys enjoy this or does it seem repetitive and would you like to do different things?
  • Phoebe and I like all those things. Don't change it.

Would it be better for us to say that meet costs $XXX single/$XXX double =air and hire an agency to put it together than the way we do it now: Bring money for carpool, bring money for opening dinner, bring money for hotel, etc?
  • The way we do it now seems good to me.

Should we look for more sponsors to cover things? Upside is you might not pay for opening dinner, but you may have to give 15 minutes to some speaker manufacturer, studio or retailer.
  • Is this the kind of thing where the sponsor wants you to purchase something immediately after the presentation? If so, then no. If not, then I think it might be a good thing to try. We could try it out this time and see how it goes.

I don't think anyone who isn't a FB maven will miss out on the info or the deadlines to follow as they get announced here, but it DOES seem weird to me for FB to get precedence over the forum itself. I'm sure the owners and mods have good reason for it tho!

We always have good reasons, Sam.

We want to build up our Facebook relationships and felt it was

the perfect venue to make a small announcement before going

much wider (which coincidentally will happen today).

Since LG is introducing a new OLED and a huge 3D Ultra High res screen maybe a demo from them?

Special monitors made for 2.35 and projection screens like Stewart CineCurve.

Got anything planned from ISF or Joe Kane?

Still some nice cinemas around, suggest El Capitan, Graumans', Vista, Viilage, Muvico, Gold Class, etc.

Some High end private theatres installed locally, the Theo Kalomirakis type... getting a tour and demo of that kind of place would be great.

How about a chance to compile lists of movies we want, with notes on desired supplements, authoring/menu choices, how to handle catalog titles, etc. A chance to get feedback directly into the hands of the studios that might help before they screw up any more vintage favorites... ; )

Come to that, what if you set up a specific forum aimed directly at each studio for consumers to document feedback and requests? Then give them a chance to respond. Maybe this gives them a chance to prepare answers to specific questions before a presentation at the event?

Companies that service Home Theatre installations might want to do something to show off their stuff (decor, popcorn machines, furniture, etc.)

PS: some of us old folks haven't the patience for twatter and Farcebook.

I would love to go too! I will be in LA for the Cinerama 60th anniversary at the Cinerama Dome - http://www.in70mm.com/news/2011/cinerama/index.htm 9/28-10/4. It would have been great if this was 10/5 to 10/12 as I could just stay another week.

I have never been so, this is what I would like to see at this one:

- Visits to the studios. Meeting with Twilight Time too might be good as they are probably the only company that would want to release the Cinerama films (see link above)
- For "technical" events very interested in anything to do with films filmed in 3-D, Cinerama, other wide screen processes and demo's how they are restored.
- visit to Universal Studios would be fun.
- Can't wait to ask the studios that if 3-strip Cinerama films are being restored digitally for not a lot of money (see link above), why can't you work with the same people and have them restore films like The Wonderful World of The Brothers Grimm, Raintree County, It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World and The Alamo since you would need millions of dollars if you did it yourself?
- Demo's of 3D front projectors like the Panasonic PT-AE7000 which also does full-frame 2.40:1 aspect ratio.

I second that.

Locals always seem to get left out, so maybe if you could plan more events like this in the evening in the conference room at the hotel, and open it up to the general membership (rather than just the attendees) and promote it more both here on the forum and over on Facebook, it would give the locals more of a chance to participate in the meet. I remember the demonstration composer and HTF member Brian Ralston provided (fairly last minute) one evening was very enjoyable and interesting.

I for one would LOVE a Brian reprise, hanging with him to get local flavor and seeing what he was workng on was a treat!

And a quick reminder to both the studios and attendees that gun replicas should be shipped from the hotel prior to leaving for the airport to go home. laugh.gif

Now this is a Xmas present I wasn't expecting at this time: This year's HTF Hollywood meet official announcement!
I'll start buying SD cards now for all the pictures I will take. On the last meet I believe Sam and me took at least 2-3 thousand pictures.

Adam...If you guys are interested...I can talk to my buddy Marc Fishman and see if we can get a Todd AO demo again.

Let me know.

ToddAO was one of my favorite visits, so I would be very interested in another!

And how could I have forgotten about the gun replica debacle? :)

Thanks...give us a few weeks to start firming things up.

Yeah, guys, appreciate all the input.

Just be aware that there are a lot of things being thrown at

us right now from all of you, and we do have a limited amount

of time and estimated planned events to deal with.

As Adam stated, give us time to sort all this out.

Tina and I will be rejoining you for the 2012 meet. We can hardly wait. It'll be fun catching up with all of you.

We personally loved the location last time and would welcome staying there again if that's the way it works out.

I personally loved the technical presentations/demonstrations like the WB restoration, Panasonic Labs, etc. Unfortunately we weren't able to make it to Todd-AO last time due to arranging something else that day and I have regretted it ever since. I would LOVE to go there. Blu-ray replication would be very cool. Anything along those lines is right up my alley. Tina loved the studio tours and meeting Ben Stiller. So it was a great mix for both of us last time.

Like I said, we can hardly wait till October!

I hope we can see at least 1 TV show taping. I have always wanted to see a sitcom taping. I would also love to see Conan or Fergusen.

Other than that, I am open to anything Movie/TV/Tech related.

Hey Scott,

The problem with the TV tapings is that they tend to interfere

with other events due to the time they are being taped.

Many shows tape around 5pm with audience members having

to be at the studio an hour or more before that.

If the group has anything in particular in mind we can look into

it, but be aware that it may cut into existing events.

Traffic tends to be our worst enemy as well.

I think for anyone who has never been to a talk show taping, it is worth going once. But having been to a couple now, I can't say I'm interested in spending my time that way unless it's something very unique. Ultimately I didn't like the disconnected feeling I got being an in-studio audience member. Since the true audience is TV viewers, live show attendees are ultimately there to fill seats, clap, and cheer. It's interesting to look at the process of filming live shows, but don't expect to get any real sense of interaction with the host or the guests at them.

Yes, I have been to tapings of a few game shows. OK to see. Would not want to do again.

Hey Ron,

I know you love 3D as much as I do. Here's hoping we will see some demo's of how the studios convert the 1950's 3D films to Blu-ray. Maybe a few will show up in goody bags?

Something like Hondo would be great. smile.gif But then, whatever we receive, if indeed anything, I'll be grateful for.
