2012 National Meet Input Wanted!

Well its getting to be that time again.....2012 is almost here and that means another National Meet in the LA area!

Here are pics from the last event: http://events.hometheaterforum.com/hollywood2008/Welcome.html

To make this meet the best ever we would like your input:

  • What have you liked best?
  • What have you liked least?
  • Was the Burbank Marriott a good hotel/location?
  • What would you like to do that hasn't been done?
  • Should we have more "technical" events (post production, sound design, disc authoring, etc).
  • How long should it last?
  • Should there be more free days?
  • Any other thoughts?
  • If you have never been, what would be the one event to make you come?

Looking forward to your feedback!

Liked best:

  • Warner Brothers / MPI behind-the-scenes of restoration
  • Warner Brothers lot tour
  • Fox (Peter Staddon days)
  • THX / Deluxe DVD authoring demo
  • Todd AO sound mixing demo

Liked least

  • Being plopped in a room to watch a movie to kill time. I suppose most of the studios have been guilty of this at some point.
  • Getting violently ill at Universal Studios, before I even had a chance to step on a ride.

Really liked the Burbank Marriott. Good location out of the way of the city's craziness, but not so far removed it meant a lot of freeway time. Also being across the street from the Burbank Airport was super handy.

I enjoy the technical stuff quite a bit as evidenced by my "liked" list. But it's nice to have that offset by the more "entertaining" things. Community events would even be a nice diversion, like going to the Hollywood Bowl for one of its mid-week concerts.

Maybe one more free day as some of us know people in the area and it can be hard to get together with them when the schedule is full. Though in those cases, many would probably just stay a couple more days past the meet for more dedicated time with friends and family.

The opening night banquet / get together has never seemed to go off without a hitch. Most places just seemed unprepared for the number in our party. Or given our budget, we could not afford to get top notch service / food. Though it's nice to have everyone together, I wouldn't be too disappointed to see this get the axe as the benefits don't seem to outweigh the costs in time and money. The casual outings to In-N-Out or Brazilian BBQ wind up being much more memorable / enjoyable.

Great feedback.  Thanks!

Agree with Cameron, will post more tomorrow. When can I send deposit? smile.gif Last time I think there was effort made to ensure that folks who never went to one could have a higher chance of getting in, I'm all for that but would hate to see any of the veterans getting locked out, it's been five years I wanna catch up with folks, lots has changed!!!

Note to Cameron: Opening dinners have been a bit of a disaster lately, and come hell or high-water that will be different this time. smile.gif

Good feedback Sam, and I look forward to seeing your other thoughts and catching up with you in person next year!  Rather than cutting people off it probably makes more sense to expand the number of attendees.  We may have to get creative then and have "electives" where on Wed you have to decide between option A and B, option A has only X slots first come first serve since some places like to limit us to smaller groups.

A few more questions for you two (and anyone else):

  • We seem to do some of the same things every meet when it comes to studio tours, etc.  Do you guys enjoy this or does it seem repetitive and would you like to do different things?
  • Would it be better for us to say that the meet costs $XXX single/$YYY double+air and hire an agency to put it together than the way we do it now: Bring money for carpool, bring money for opening dinner, bring money for hotel, etc?
  • Should we look for more sponsors to cover things?  Upside is you might not pay for opening dinner, but you may have to give 15 minutes to some speaker manufacturer, studio or retailer.

I think given how frequently we have a meet, the repeated activities are actually kind of nice for tradition. But a little change up wouldn't be so bad either if another opportunity comes up. For example, the small group that went to Todd AO was one of the best things from the last meet.

Having a total cost through an agency might be a little easier in terms of budgeting, but the other method wasn't necessarily hard to manage.

Listening to a sponsor pitch wouldn't be so bad if it were something of interest to the group.

I'd be very into that.

I'd have to say that the Studio meets are the 'heart' of the HTF tours, the extracurricular stuff like the dinners and the theme park days are the jelly that holds it all together, and the special side trips (like going to the sound studio where we saw they setup for Eagle Eye and the Panasonic tour are the spices that really make each different year special. I'd continue to do all three.

I would be VERY hesitant to put coordination into a 3rd parties hands. I liked how vans were run in the past and would like to see that continue. I'm not sure folks know how stressful it can be driving the vans tho, there is usually so much fun going on during the rides with good conversation that it's tough to be both a driver and participant, so if there's a way to get multiple people approved in advance to drive a vehicle I definitely recommend that.

Unfortunately a couple of the trips are running together in my mind, so sorry if I confuse places. The Beverly is fine, it worked great for our purposes. I wasn't as big a fan of the other one, it was located centrally but I don't remember much else about it.

I definitely want to go to at least 1 taping, more if possible, don't care what show i'm down for whatever.

The SVS room was AWESOME last time but a lot of work to get set up and torn down, I'm all for doing that again but let's not kid ourselves about how much preparation that requires, in the heat =)

Definitely want to keep the locals in mind this time. That was my biggest disappointment in the past, that they got cut out of so much of it and we didn't get to hang with them more. I know this is a nightmare to coordinate but I think it's important, I especially really liked getting to meet with locals in the different entertainment businesses.

FRYS. That is all.

More as I think of it.

FRYS. That is all.

The new place (Marriott) was just a block from Fry's, about a 5 min walk.  I can't believe it didn't score higher than the Beverly with you for that reason alone!  Reason for the switch was because The Beverly wouldn't work with us last time on price or the SVS room, and the Marriott did.  The Marriott was also more centrally located to the events, was next to Fry's, and a few "cheap eats" places.  Plus really convenient for those of us flying into Burbank.  That doesn't mean that's where we will be staying this time.  Each meet booking a hotel is a new adventure with new challenges.

I'd love to involve more locals, but there are two challenges.  We need enough out of towners to get a discounted hotel rate and get the demo room included, and we are usually limited to 60 per studio.  I'll try to come up with more ways to include them.

Thanks Adam. I hope it's evident that I for one am very excited about being able to do this trip again and I'll do my best to help any way I can. I haven't been on a real vacation since the last one, so yeah, I'm ready for a fun trip!

Thanks.  Ron, Kevin and I have started talking about it and we want to try to make this the best meet ever, setting the bar so high that they will all be downhill from here laugh.gif.  That means looking at what has worked and not worked in the past.

My last "Vacation" also was the LA meet. Count me in for next year's meet. The Marriott was fine with me. I'll bring plenty of SD cards for the pictures !!

The Burbank location worked out really well with its proximity to the airport and the inexpensive restaurants across the street.

If we're in the same location I suggest an opening or closing night event at the Hollywood Heritage Museum:

http://www.hollywoodheritage.org/museum/museum.html

It's close by and can be rented for a BBQ or other type of meal.

Perhaps an organized road trip/picnic to Bronson Canyon in Griffith Park could be scheduled:

Hah!   Read my mind.  I'd love to go this year; but yes, after tax season is ideal ;)  Plus late spring or summer makes it easier to travel in general.

We are actively starting to work on this and get the date nailed.  Right now its sometime late third quarter early 4th quarter.  We are looking at maybe making it a bit shorter (4-5 days) so people can have time to do some touristy stuff if they want in the LA area.

We are wanting to have a big studio event during the day, and an optional planned event each night.  We are thinking that it would be great to get studios like Twilight Time or Shout Factory (just examples at this point) to come out to the demo room in the evenings to have a chance to meet with members and show us what they are working on.

Additionally we have some non-studio events that we are trying to incorporate (speaker design and testing facility, BD replication plant, etc) that may not be able to accommodate everyone so we are trying to figure out how to incorporate "electives" with transportation.

I love the way you guys think!  I saw the dates quickly on my phone yesterday and got scared it was before October 15 (a majors IRS deadline for 401k plans).  If the trip was a week earlier, I'd be out.  As it is, it's a GREAT way to decompress from five weeks of insanity!

Hah, Tax Season isn't my limit, my house is under construction and April 15th is about a week or two after I move in. October is MUCH better for me anyway tho!

The dates are great for us. Phoebe and I had such a great time at the last meet. We definitely want to go again. Good thing HTF had a link with a hint about a special announcement on Facebook that I could click on, since I don't do Facebook.

Adam, do you still want input or is that over now that the 2012 meet has been announced? This thread was under my radar until today.

.

I hope you and Phoebe can make it Frank! As for the facebook stuff, I continue to /facepalm at pushing secret special announcements there but I'm glad that folks who didn't see this thread already ARE finding it! I don't think anyone who isn't a FB maven will miss out on the info or the deadlines to follow as they get announced here, but it DOES seem weird to me for FB to get precedence over the forum itself. I'm sure the owners and mods have good reason for it tho!

Frank - It will be great to see you guys again.  Input is good as we are going to be hard at work confirming what we will be doing in Jan/Feb and then it takes another month or two to massage the schedule.  I can say that we will be working on some additional evening events at the hotel with some smaller studios/labels (like Twilight Time for example) hosting screenings, Q&A etc.  The opening dinner is going back to the Hard Rock where we have had MUCH better experiences than recent locations.  If you have any feedback that you would like to share please do so....we always want to make these events better!
