Battleship (2012) - starring Taylor Kitsch and Alexander Skarsgard - Page 2

Then i guess TonyD there is no doubt that the REAL STEEL robots will of course, fall in love with each other
As it's a staple in romcom that the couple always start by pissing each other off first.

and then the next thing you know...

cue David Rose.

The concept is as pointless as turning a boardgame into an alien invasion movie.

I guess you have never built anything for competition or helped a son or daughter practice for a major competition? If the movie was well made (not likely) you would feel that the son and his father poured everything they had into building that robot (no personification needed) and fell the joy and disappointment if it wins or loses at the end. If you watch the dessert competitions on Food Network where the chefs spend days building these elaborate pieces, do you feel nothing when they drop it on the floor since after all they only damaged "a thing", not something real?

Now for the actual Real Steel movie I expect the filmmakers to use all the cliches and tricks for false emotional investment (the robot is alive type stuff) instead of good solid realistic emotional investment of building something for competition.

Sorry to bring up Real Steel.. kinda getting off topic now. From the trailer it looks like the emotional investment will be in Hugh Jackman's character and son using his "obsolete" boxing expertise to teach a supposedly inferior robot to be able to win. But still, it does make me think of Rock'em Sock'em Robots. biggrin.gif

Clue made some sense as a movie since the board game has actual, you know, CHARACTERS.

Unlike Battleship.

Right Chuck.

except we're talking about an 80-million dollar Rock 'em Sock 'em and not Robot wars
on BBC 2.Or Food network challenges.

And i don't know of any one film that does not use false emotional investment (everything in a film is false )
but does brings real tears or pure joy from a lot of people.

I'm the first guy that wants it

That don't mean i want an 80-million corn-on-the-cob handed to me.

I'd rather have Field of dreams or The iron giant.

.

For the record, Real Steel is based on Richard Matheson's short story Steel.

Now that you mention it TravisR,i realize it's the Twilight zone episode with Lee Marvin.

But without the father-son relationship.Just the down-and-out promoter and the robot.

I don't mean "false" as in made up like all fiction. In this context I am talking about "false" to mean going for the unrealistic or unnatural within the universe the movie sets up as a quick shortcut to emotions. We have real robot wars and build competitions that are quite emotional to the contestants to see their creation destroyed. No need to go for the typical unrealistic (in the movie universe) cheat of "this one machine has come alive" to make us feel sad when it is destroyed. Write it and direct it so we feel the same emotions as the creators.

I caught the trailer for this flick last weekend and it looks ok. But I think the film will turn out to be just another mindless 90-minute Hollywood crapfest, pretty much like everything else these days. I remember being impressed by the trailer for Battle Los Angeles and was hugely disappointed by the film. The only movie I'm really looking forward to this Summer is Prometheus. If that one disappoints then all hope will be lost.

A new trailer posted today.  Even thought I don't think the Navy has any capital battleships left and it looks like Transformers 4 I'm all over a blow everything up CGI summer film:

I'm just hoping they can work "You sank my battleship!" into the movie.

Big, loud and dumb. I am absolutely there!!

Please, please, please leave Rianna's footage on the editing room floor. She is very unpleasant to look at.

Yawn.

I think the studios have finally run out of movies to remake. Moving on to board games seems like the next logical step. I'd love to see a movie based on Connect Four, one of my childhood favorites. (Just kidding - this is an awful idea and I certainly hope it's not the next 'big thing').

I heard the next horror flick is going to be "Mouse Trap". :) I will watch this but not until it hits bluray.

Hungry Hungry Hippos - when hippos attack
Cooties - and they're hungry!
Ants in the Pants - and they're hungry!

Possibilities are endless.

You're hired.

Call me crazy but I think making board games into a SNL-style sketch could actually be funny if only because it's so silly. Look at Greg's taglines, those ideas could work in short bursts.

For some reason, I find the hippo to be a funny looking animal so if they were running around eating people (in a comedy), I would pay $12 to see that as a movie.

When I was a kid the Cooties toys always reminded me of the bugs in The Outer Limits episode "The Zanti Misfits", and they creeped me right the hell out.

Robot Chicken was way ahead of the curve on this trend. smiley_wink.gif

My BIL wants to go see this tonight so it would appear I "will" be seeing it in the theater.  I'm really hoping it's not as bad as a lot of the critics are saying it is.   I'm hoping it will be much better than Skyline and about the same as Transformers: Dark of the Moon.

BIL?

I remember when it was simply girlfriend, boyfriend, partner, fiancé, buddy

Could mean brother-in-law.

It does.

Ok, then I guess I just don't get the need to invent acronyms, oh well.

Wow. Umm ok then. Yes I Lazily shortened Brother-in-Law.

Just got back from seeing it and it very much reminded me of Armageddon with a little Transformers mixed in. The dialogue was kind of cheesy at times and I really didn't feel anything for the characters. But I actually did enjoy it. It certainly wasn't better than the Avengers but was definitely a better movie than Skyline. I don't see this one making to much money based on the fact that our theater was practically empty.

Similar to the Robot Chicken thing above...but more in line with what Hollywood would probably do with it...I give you a potential look at what is next in scraping the board game barrel for movie ideas.

LOL!

Believe it or not, I was rather entertained by "Battleship". They did a good job building up Taylor Kitsche's character (somewhat street smart slacker who gets a second wind in the Navy, only to have his stubbornness threatening to sink his own Navy career until the aliens show up and he has to lead and show his grit). This is very much like a Michael Bay summer blockbuster, but with heart and an outlook that everyone can make a difference, regardless of perceived limitations.

All I can say, even with the trappings of the Battleship game (the aliens' artillery looking like Battleship pegs), and later the game grid comes into play rather nearly, it was a fun movie to root for the humans in spite of overwhelming odds and firepower.

I give it 3 stars, or a grade of B.
