I was ready to dismiss it but then Liam Neeson showed up.  I probably won't go see it in the theaters but it will definitely be a BD must rent.

Meh. I'm waiting for Edward Norton in Connect Four. "This summer, terror has a tagline! Pretty (out of focus, fast imagery) Sneaky. (out of focus, fast imagery) Sis! (scream) Rated R. In Real3D and IMAX."

I guess those alien armour piercing rounds are supposed to represent the markers that denote a "hit" in the game. Frankly, i cannot think of a more pointless exercise than to make a movie based on a boardgame, especially one as simple as "Battleship". Myriads of books out there and the best they can come up with is a film based on a property that had no story or characters to speak of. Not to mention, it is yet another alien invasion film. Does Hollywood know something we don't?

Looks cool, I'll buy the Blu.

I'm a sucker for alien invasion movies, I'll go see this in the theater unless the buzz gets out that it totally sucks. As far as being based on the game, well there are battleships but as far as the trailer goes, that's about it. Battleship, the game, is a contest between two people, usually human. This is an alien invasion.

Nebbermind. Someone else already made the point I was making.
How do you get aliens out of the boardgame Battleship? I've played that game many many times and never had to fight an alien. Man, Hollywood can't even get this right.

As far as boardgame movies go, Clue will never be topped.
Clue never be topped as the worst movie of it's kind. Sorry Jason I hated it. A much better movie is Murder By Death, which clue seems to be trying to imitate.

2012 summer ! Avengers or....Battleship ???

This has got to be the most ridiculous setup ever.

http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/universal/battleship/

Right down to the little pins of the game.Which are ginormous pins in the movie.

Poor Liam Neeson.frown.gif

Folks,we're scraping the bottom of the barrel now,and it's not looking good.

Next up in 2013 ?

Operation,Tip it and Kerplunk: the franchise

Really now....

In all fairness, this movie seems as much based on Battleship the boardgame as ER was based on Operation. What I don't understand is why they're acknowledging any connection between the game and the movie or why the studio probably paid millions to license a board game. I think most people would laugh at seeing a move version of a board game. However, call this thing The Battleship That Fought Aliens and people would be lining up for it.

It looks like a typical fun summer blockbuster movie, but I second all the comments as to why they felt they needed to license the game for it.

The title is probably trademarked, therefore the requirement to license the game.

When this comes out next year and the reviews start popping up,i feel many critics would enjoy trying to bypass the legal dept. and
have a headline that would replace the P with a T. biggrin.gif

Is there a Standards and practices for mags ?

I've always said that the people in charge of editing the trailers, for the most part, are very good at it,at convincing people in one way or
another to go see the actual film.

Wondering if the guy for this one has stopped laughing already.

Unless all of this is bogus, and Liam Neeson at the very end says in a solemn voice : "We need.....(wait for it)...the AVENGERS !! "

Woohoo!!patriot.gifdrum.gif

Dialog that needs to be in the movie:

Liam to alien commander: "What's your name!"

Alien commander: "Jiate."

Liam: "You sank my battleship!"

I was blown away when I was in Cracker Barrel last night and saw a revival of the old game where you have to fish items out of the shark's mouth before it bites down. I had forgotten it existed. That's just begging to be made into a movie ("Yeah, and it's called Jaws.").

Edit: Oh, that's rich. The game from my childhood was Jaws! Licensed product. The new version is called Sharky's Diner, but every piece is identical to the original. Horror fans are going nuts over it. I'm going to pick one up.

I take back what I said before, it's totally worth the money they paid to license the game just so they can use that line. I think Neeson and Skarsgard are talented actors but I look forward to seeing them (or anyone else) try to pull that line off.

That's the one with the plastic pieces like the broken wagon wheel, a leg bone and a skull, right?

Ladies and gentlemen for reference and fun purposes,

I didn't remember it was at an opera,i thought i remembered 2 old mustachioed curmodgeons sitting in a house.

Must be a different game.

See ?
i could definitely watch 2 hours of THAT.

" C-5 ! "
" SHHHHHH "

Yeah! A review on Amazon says the new version is a letdown, but I don't know if they really screwed something up or if it's selective memory. Like someone on a Universal Horror board, I had the shark laying around for years, but I didn't even remember that fact until last night.

BATTLESHIP looks like such horrifically awful bad idea.

Although - having seen the trailer for REAL STEEL. I think they missed out by not licensing "Rock'em Sock'em Robots".
When I was watching the trailer for REAL STEEL, all I kept asking myself was....why? Why are they making this thing? I mean, a person can at least identify or empathize with a human struggling to reach the top in a boxing ring, but why would you care about some guy trying to build a robot that can become a fight champ? The concept is as pointless as turning a boardgame into an alien invasion movie.

Looks like it might be fun to me. How do you know there isn't something more to the robots then just being robots, they'll probably have a personality. Did you like Wall-E?

TonyD

you think there's the slightest chance that the aliens in Battleship will be unfortunately misunderstood and turn out to be
madly in love with the actual ship of the film ?

Although it's not on the top of my Pixar list,i seriously doubt anyone will find a remote connection between the two ,but
be my guest if you'd like to try.

which seems plausible considering your answer, are you willingly gonna fork the money over to this ?

See if you can read this out loud in your room..and not giggle.

(Hypothetical review of 2012 )

Well Battleship is out this weekend, and just like Wall-E..there is a....

biggrin.gif

but props and many points to you Tony for mentioning Murder by death.thumbsup.gif
post #26 of 73
Ben, look at the post I was responding to it was for Real Steel not Battleship. I have NO doubt the Aliens in Battleship will fall in love with the the ship. tongue.gif

Thats it i'm blind.
i can no longer write.

Sorry bout that.really sorry.

The first step in great scriptwriting is the ability to observe carefully and i
find i am lacking in that department nowadays.

But kidding aside, this is becoming more and more depressing to me..

How long to you guys figure it will take Hollywood to go throught the entire Toys R us inventory

Have you ever walked into one of these,it's a big store.

I went to the Times square one. That one has a ferris wheel in it.A ferris wheel.

Hope there's still a thing called film in the next life.

I think it's laughable that they're making a movie based on board game but it's not like blockbusters have just taken a turn for the worse with Battleship, they've always been stupid and lousy in general. And has already been pointed out, they've already made a movie based on a board game more than 25 years ago so it's not setting any type of new low in Hollywood either. It's just another dopey movie that's probably no better or no worse than most other summer movies that have come before it.

Too funny.  I thought a two-word review was as short as you could get (i.e. the review of "Shark Sandwich" in This is Spinal Tap).  But this movie actually presents the possibility for a one-word review!  And fewer letters need to be changed, to boot.  laugh.gif
