"Thumbs up" - interesting idea, but never gets seen

I've tagging posts now and again with the recently added "Thumbs Up" feature. Being a Facebook addict, I've got a Pavlovian response to little thumb icons and it's carried over to HTF :)

However, I've found that the "thumbs" is essentially invisible to users, particular the poster I gave credit to. They receive no notification of the "liking". And once a post is off screen, it's basically never see again, so a minor delay in writing and receiving a kudos is never known.

I don't have a solution. Maybe email on in-forum notifications would help? But I see a feature that might be fun and encouraging to people, that's currently not quite getting the job done.

And I don't mean this to be a real complaint. More of a comment that I see and use this new feature, and look forward to it being completely implemented :)

Unless no one ever likes my posts. Then you should scrap the whole thing, since it won't do me any good... ;)

You see...I'm the exact opposite of a Facebook addict (whatever THAT might be called) and I just figured I never noticed if anyone used the feature because I have not been "trained" to look for it.

The thing is, Dave...if we went to e-mail notifications I probably STILL wouldn't see then as I'd probably turn 'em off.  tongue.gif  I get enough e-mails.

Dave-

The thumbs up are the first phase of our reputation system which should be arriving in the next two weeks.  The more thumb ups you have the more icons that look suspiciously like Oscar statues (but clearly aren't for TM purposes) you will have.

Good idea. thumbsup.gif I didn't really notice the 'thumbs up'  extra on thread pages here until a few weeks ago. I think it's a good idea because it helps to boost discussion on the HTF.

I'd rather have the option of rating specific posts as to whether or not they add value to the discussion. There's no point in personally responding when someone goes into petulant rant mode and starts flinging accusations around just because their particular desires aren't being met (which happens more and more), but there should be some way to express displeasure at that kind of behavior.

I've noticed recently, when I expand a thumbs up to see who rated the post, the little "x" button that SHOULD close the popup instead takes me to the top of the page, and does not make the popup go away (seems I can't make it go away except by reloading the page).

I'm using Firefox, btw.

Which FF version are you using and what computer OS are you using?

Nevermind, I was able to duplicate once I gave you a thumbs up.  Thanks for the report.

We should see a fix for this in the next release due in about a week.

Will be fixed on the next release (tentative for 8/30)

"Like" button now takes two clicks to active (the icon and then the dialog button). More friction to do what should be a fast, trivial operation.

It should be like Facebook's "Like". Don't pop up a comment bubble. Don't require me to confirm the click I just made. Just do it, one click no fuss.

I would like for this feature among others, to work on the iPad.

I do almost all my HTF browsing on my ipad and too much just doesn't work.

As you can see from the pic even after I posted this the thumb box is still there and the add to rep button is not clickable.

So would you just ditch comments on the thumbs up all together? or have two buttons, a thumbs up and a thumbs up + comment?  What if the box auto confirmed if you didn't enter any text after say 10 sec?

I think a Facebook-ian "Like" button is all that is required; and it should be that simple.

And if someone has comments to make in response to a post, shouldn't they steered into the conversation? Secondary meta conversations about a thread would seem to be a distraction?

Agree totally on that Dave.

And thanks Adam.
