Hi. My old VHS is slowly giving up the ghost and so we have decided to move with the times and get one of those DVD/HDD recorder things. The problem is that we have a stack of store bought videos that my kids still want to watch. I'm not looking to start a pirate movie business but I think it fair for me to copy those movies over to DVD for personal use. Does anyone have any suggestions or links that can help? Cheers in advance.

I believe circumventing copyright protection is what's not permitted. Moving VHS to a DVD backup shouldn't be a problem.
There are players that will do it for you (VHS and DVD in the same unit). To do it yourself you'll need a video capture card. The downside is that the copying is real-time, and the video quality will be just as bad as the VHS, maybe a bit worse. It's probably better all around (cost and quality) to just go pick those movies up used on DVD.

The original poster asked about copying "store bought" VHS tapes to DVD. That will almost always involve circumventing Macrovision copy protection, which is a forbidden topic here.
