Video Game Music.. what's the best?

At E3, they showed off a symphony concert for Zelda, and I though that while it gets dismissed, there is some absolutely fantastic music that comes from Video games.. so I was thinking, we have a top-five albums, what would be the top five music pieces from video games?

First for me is obvious, not just because it's great video game music but because the moment I hear it I immediately think about the game. It's one of the few soundtracks I keep on my iPod from a game for pete sake..

But after that, there are several that get my attention.. the Credits from Portal

Then Mario..

In fact, the entire Mario soundtrack is great.. hearing it in Symphony is also awesome

Little Big Planet

PixelJunk Monsters.. actually, this entire soundtrack is brilliant

I'd have to think on it. There are several game soundtracks I actually find pretty good to be honest. A few very good. Nine Inch Nails Doom3 soundtrack should also get a mention

The first video game music that really stood out for me was probably the first Medal of Honor on the original Playstation.

Most of the FF games have great orchestral arrangements.  Well, up through like FF9/10 they did.  The ones after have a couple great ones and mostly not-so-great ones.

Some of the old Castlevania game music is cool

Plus some renditions people have done of those songs are also cool.

I also really love the song from Mirror's Edge.

My 2 favorite video game themes come from the PS1 days.

When games started moving towards CD media, the music quality really went up a notch!

The original Tomb Raider theme and Beyond the Beyond. Check them out.

Despite their dated "electronic" sounds, I think that from a standpoint of core musical foundation, Final Fantasy VI, and Legend of Zelda: A link to the Past are pretty amazing.  More modern games, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Metroid Prime (all of 'em), and The World Ends With You have had pretty good soundtracks.

If you enjoy video game music, OC Remix is a must visit. It's videogame music, covered, re-interpreted, or otherwise performed by amateurs. I've found a number of songs I really like on the site.

But regarding music specifically: The Half Life series stands out to me for *not* using music, until crucial and then you're hit with short pieces that match the situation perfectly. Perhaps best known is the Vortigaunt Combat scene. I played that two or three times for the incredible experience created. Listening to the music per se, it may not stand out as more than generic techno-electronica filler. But in context, Valve's general aural sparseness makes the infrequent musical cues powerful and memorable. (My bias though is that HL2:E2 is perhaps my favorite adult video game.)

And for context in the game:

Quick one: for great music we have to go pretty old school: M.U.L.E. This is up there for me. You can have your Zeldas and Marios. Multiplayer M.U.L.E. on the Atari or C64 was where it was at.

I would like to take a moment to thank Dave for spelling "per se" correctly, possibly for the first time in the history of the Internet. :)

I'd like to participate, as I love vidya game music, but I'm coming up blank. Obviously, the Zeldas and Marios and anything Kojo Kondo has done (though, Zelda is a good inspiration and original music in the series by other artists has also been good). I like the No One Lives Forever music, but there's not much of it and it repeats.
