"West Side Story" blu-ray Street Date:October 17th - Page 7

Charles, problem is I don't have a turntable to play it on!!! I do have the CD and it has everything the LP had plus!
I see there's going to be a Theatrical Screening of the 50th Anniversary of West Side Story at selected theaters. I wonder it it will have the "flaw" that is in the Blu-Ray??

Ah, then the mistake was not in getting rid of a particular LP -- it was in getting rid of the turntable!  smile.gif

Charles, I got rid of both LP and turntable. The turntable I lent to my brother for the weekend. He said he'd return it. That was 40 years ago!!! The LP I gave away when I got the CD. A lot of folks like LPs but I find CDs better sounding.

Of course it will. They're digitally projecting the same master.

The screenings should be interesting, as they have a caveat attached to them as follows:

This event presentation has been modified from its original 1961 release to fit the screen.

The DCP version is 2.20:1 in a DCI.2.39:1 aperture, it is also 5.1 and the black fade is there,
well is was on the UK version.

NED

I have the original 1984 Japanese soundtrack CD, and it has the original stereo mix of the soundtrack, which starts off with the Prologue and also doesn't have the "Mambo" sequence. It also doesn't have any film dialogue in it at all, except for a bit at the beginning of "Cool." The first US CD had that looong bit of dialogue from "Tonight." On the Japan CD, it's just a brief violin intro.

I just learned that there are also problems with the Intermission music on the blu-ray....the first several seconds are cut off. Anyone heard about this??

UK intermission music seems fine...

Just learned from whom? I'd have to watch again, but my memory is that there's nothing clipped from the beginning of the entr'acte.

I saw the theatrical screening last night, in Secaucus NJ. The fadeout in the overture was there. The aspect ratio was correct, even though there was a disclaimer at the beginning stating that the screen size had been modified. It was shown letterboxed, the same way it'll show on my home theater. Screens in 1961 were bigger, sad to say. I had a good time, but the audience was quite small and very quiet. All the laughs I usually hear at screenings of West Side Story weren't there this time. The picture also looked a little dark, and many of the night scenes in the second half looked washed out. Still, it was nice to know that people all over the country were watching West Side Story in a theater at the same time. I only wish a few more of them were sitting in MY theater.

There has been some talk and discussion about the 3D lens staying in place over the digital projector in most of the AMC & Regal Theatres when there is not a 3D presentation, due to the difficulty in removing the lens on certain digital projectors.  I am not saying this was the case in Secaucus, but it does cut down on the light emitting on the screen and gives the presentation a darker look.  Again this is not at all digital theatres and is only a problem on one model digital projector (Sony 4K).  There are numerous reasons for the image to appear dark.

I am glad to hear that so many people enjoyed themselves and there were only a few glitches in the actual theatre presentations.

Thanks, Allen. That would explain the dark image, even though the Secaucus theater was run by Kerasotes. I also think the showing in another auditorium in the complex had many more patrons. I arrived right before showtime and had to sit in the second theater. There were only around 20 people in there.

I haven't got my copy yet - but oddly enough I'm most looking forward to seeing and hearing the multi-colored prologue and that heart-stopping moment when the screen shifts perspective and we get the main title at the bottom. The best part of a great movie!

I've just purchased the amazing new book on the life and work of Saul Bass. One of the first things I learned was that Saul Bass did NOT design the poster artwork and logos for West Side Story. So for 50 years or so I had like many of us 'assumed' that Saul Bass designed this work. It was designed by Joseph Caroff!

I think that Saul Bass did design the overture and title sequences for WWS.

Yes... That is correct. He designed the overture and end title sequence. But it was always assumed by me and I gather an awful lot of people that he also designed the poster and logo. That he didn't do...
Well, we all stand corrected and in the naughty corner for not doing proper research. Obviously Mr Caroff is a hero of the unsung variety, though a simple Google has revealed he also designed the 007 logo. I wonder what else he did?

Whoa.  Amazing.  Mr. Joseph Caroff sits in good company, and we owe him a lifetime of gratitude and long deserved recognition.
