So You Think You Can Dance (Season 8) - Page 4

Not too many surprises tonight. Oddly there weren't that many special guest performances, so it felt like a clip show for most of it.

They sure did set it up for Melanie to win. I think they did everything they could to make it happen. Damn fine final 3 though.

I still like Lauren.

Glad to see Melanie win.  She might be my favourite female dancer out of all the seasons (though it's a tight race with other dancers such as Allison and Kayla).

Melanie certainly deserved it, put I was hoping Marko would win.  Totally enjoyable first season watching for me...can't wait for next season!

I was surprised they announced the vote totals for the top 2. That was a pretty wide margin of victory.

I was rooting for Marko too, but can't complain about Melanie winning. She's outstanding and deserving. This was an enjoyable season for sure, and even Mary Murphy was just about tolerable in her semi toned down state.

Was this season shorter than in years past?

What's weird is that Sasha was never on my radar, but she got stronger and stronger as the season wore on (plus, I was sort of distracted by Kaitlyn).

The season stunk of unfairness and excessive pimping.  Not only did she have 9 jazz/contemp numbers plus a Broadway and Lyrical hip hop that were up her alley as well (totalling 11 of 15 dances), but she wasn't given outre styles like Waacking or Stepping that could have made her look bad.  Two weeks ago she had two jazz/contemp numbers.  In the finals, she had three.  Nice way to top off a boring and predictable season, I guess.

While she certainly did have luck on her side regarding partners and styles (which are still random--a fact addressed specifically by Nigel via twitter), I have to disagree that the pimping was excessive.  Nigel himself definitely spent equal time pimping out both Melanie *and* Sasha, while a number of other judges heaped an enormous amount of praise on Sasha.  At no point did was the pimping on the same level as we've seen in the past, for example, with Kent.

Also, Melanie deserved the attention.

Waacking needs to never come back, however.  It can take stepping and disco with it.

I hope Wade Robson is back next season.

How many times did Nigel tell Sasha she was the best dancer only to tell Melanie that, no, she was the best dancer?  He even did it in the finals and looked a bit foolish in doing so since Sasha's previous routine was better than the one Melanie did.  Seemed pretty scripted to me.

I agree with him: Melanie's routine was better than Sasha's.  Actually, Sasha had a weak finale, in my opinion--she looked either sick or exhausted.  The last routine with the pair of girls, however, saw her regain her form.

Initially, I could agree, at least partially, that Melanie had been lucky in her dance options. But especially by the final eight, it was clear to me that she was a performer that made her luck. Other contestants would create good performances in routines where I knew Melanie would have been fantastic.

And she was my favorite through the final 20 or so. By the final 4, though, I thought it was anyone's guess whether it would be her or Sasha, but it was undoubtedly between those two women. The men were good, but none brought the performance the women did. And, at her best Caitlynn approached Melanie's emotional power, but only got there with a few dances; otherwise she was "merely" very good.

I'm glad Melanie won. But Sasha was also amazing and hit gone her way, she would have been as deserving.

As a side note: I'm not a big 'reality' viewer, and this is my first full season of SYTYCD. Dance is a far more "human" show that I've seen, and crushes this' year's AGT. Following 20 excellent performances for a couple of months, with the touch-feely backstories gives a sense of who they are. It's clear there are real friendships behind the scenes. And even Mel and Sasha, who don't seem to be BFFs, still appear to have a deep professional respect and accord for one another. And the judges...they are invested in the show, providing real feedback, and not foolishly mugging for the cameras and promoting stupid acts for short-term ratings.

I'm sometimes bored with the dances; it doesn't rivet me like a great drama does. But I'm impressed by the totality and very positive humanity of Dance.
