We decided it might be fun to have an official poll every month, and to kick it off in style we have decided to give away a $50 Amazon gift card to one lucky HTF member.  To enter just vote in this months poll.  Winner will be drawn at random.

This months question is: How do you have your receiver set up?  5.1, 7.1 or even 9.1?

Feel free to discuss your setup below.  Good luck!

Poll closes Monday April 11th

Fine print: We will chose one person at random who voted in the poll to win a $50 Amazon gift card (USD).  In the event that the winner lives outside of the US we will at the winners request substitute a local currency Amazon gift card worth the equivalent of $50 USD.

I'm using a 7.1 system in my primary room with back channels.

I'm using a 5.1 system with our front projector. Energy speakers and BIC America F-12 sub.

Now, where do I vote?

I have a Panny Blu ray HTiB.  The 7.1, 1250w system.  But I don't bother with the side speakers unless I'm going to watch something that uses them, like Dark City.

I have a 6.1 or 5.1+ system. Basically 5.1 with an extra rear middle/height.

And a sort of combined double-sub.

But I'm technically convinced that 5.1 is enough.

(Voted as 7.1 used in 5.1)

5.1

We've got a 7.1 system, but don't use the 6+7 speakers for two reasons:

a) they'd sit in the middle of the floor at the sides and my daughter would eat them (she's at that stage).

b) we didn't notice any difference using them when we did have them in position, of course, if we were to use them regularly, we likely would begin to notice the difference, but reason 'a' limits that at the moment...

My main system is 5.1, and that was my vote.  I also have a system in my computer room, which is 7.1 set up as a 5.1 - which I also run a lot as 2.1.

7.1 -- in 7.1 configuration with rear speakers.  Vandersteen, Energy, and Lava.

I just expanded from 5.1 to 7.1 last weekend.  Dipoles on the sides near the ceiling and bipoles at the back at about a 90 degree angle at the same height as the sides.  Going to 7.1 wasn't like night and day, but it is definitely an improvement.  The room is about 500 square ft.

I have my brand new 7.1 system.

I'm using a 7.1 system with back channels.

I just wish they'd do more movies in 7.1 surround.

I voted 6.1 as that is what I have in the main system.  The secondary basement system has 8.1 with two height channels.

Using 5.1 on a 7.1 system.  Hope to add two more

speakers at some point.

I'm using a 7.1 set up with the two additional rear speakers. I hope to upgrade my speakers in the next year or so (but an upgrade to a 3D TV is first on my to-do list before I dabble with the audio again).

Yeah, I feel a discrimination suit coming here. smiley_wink.gif laugh.gif

Put me down for ye o' 4.0 biggrin.gif (w/ audiophile level, full-range mains doing phantom center and no sub as I can't really shake the foundations where I am anyway).  Maybe that'll change after I move to a bigger place w/ possibly dedicated HT/entertainment room later this year... cool.gif

Basic 5.1 system here.

7.1 System, 5.1 setup due to a couple of reasons: space limitations for the speakers, and having to run wire to the speakers.

Some day, when the quality and technology are there, I'd love to get flat, wall mounted wireless speakers and go 7.1 A $50 Amazon gift card would help towards getting me there! biggrin.gif

I use a 7.1 setup in my main unit which can go one of three ways:  back surround...front wide...or front height.  I receive compelling results with the latter two whenever they are activated.  Good poll, Adam!!!!!  smile.gif

I plan on moving to a 7.2 configuration later this year as I look to add two new subs to my setup. (I wish I could go 9.2 in my unit, through.  If I could, I would.)

Doing 5.1 in 7.1-capable. The space isn't really conducive to a 7.1, though I have thought about trying to make it so.

I have a 5.1 system (system upgrade 2008 - 2010).

My receiver supports DPL IIz, so I considered a 7.1 Front Height system (no room for rear surrounds or wide surrounds). I ran the pricing and had SAF. But after consideration, it made more sense to put my speaker money into 5 speakers rather than spreading it thinner over 7, especially when FH is said to be a nuanced improvement. The FH setup would also require in-wall wiring, wall mounting, and would be visually awkward.

Should I ever finish my basement, or move to a new place with a larger media room, I'd be inclined to buy matched speakers for a 7 or 9.1 system. But that's fantasy for now :)

I voted 7.1 with rear/back channels, but I have two subs.
I might have voted wrong,I have a denon that allows for 9 speakers plus a sub and thats what I have set up.

2 floor standing fronts, a center, 2 on the sides and 4 in the rear. @ off which are considered center rear SS i suppose.

Interesting that with all of the push for technology, the clear (and vast) majority is for 5.1 variants, even amongst the bleeding edge type people!
