Mark,

Thanks a bunch for the Blue Whale reference. I was curious, and couldn't recall. I think I told you that I've been near the Black Pearl. My friend ate there when he was on vacation a couple of years ago. It's a funny kind of coincidence what David Henesy ended up doing later in life (owning his own tavern). I wonder if he thought about calling it the Blue Whale. smiley_wink.gif

"The Maggie Barnabas edit I would love to know about. Scott you mean whole scene was taken out?? My gosh!!!"

Yeah, that's neat. I don't know more than what I posted, as I got it off of your link. Oh, and just because I'm purchasing the set for my daughter doesn't mean I won't snag it on occasion -- especially now that I have learned of this 'deleted' scene and the restored edits.

"The honor date today. The episode for me would be Angelique dies in Barnabas arms as he tell her she is his one true love."

Yes, and I love the scene where Barnabas finds out that Angelique is locked in the tower. I think that was in 1897, but my memory on that is a bit fuzzy.

["The honor date today. The episode for me would be Angelique dies in Barnabas arms as he tell her she is his one true love."

Can you tell me which what number that episode is? I have to confess that I've always found the Barnabas/Angelique relationship one of the strengths of the series.

When was that episode again?

James,

I'd love to help you here, but I haven't seen this episode in about forty years, and I am relying on my memory. I'm gradually working my way through the series (I watched episodes nos. 501 and 502 yesterday). I won't be getting to the 1897 story line for quite some time. Hopefully, Mark will know the answer to both of your questions above, as IMO he knows this show as well as anyone on this Board. So I'm not ignoring you, I just don't know the answer at present. Sorry.
James you are correct about Barnabas and Angelique. Lara Parker stated once that when ratings took a dip Dan Curtis ordered up his big guns which Dan said were Barnabas and Angelique.

The episode you refer is the finale to 1841. Barnabas and Julia and Elliot all return to 1971 near the end of this episode. We see Barnabas and Julia leave the drawing room alone. The scene is the last we will ever see of Barnabas Collins and Julia Hoffman The show went right into PT 1841 after the scene. The dvd it is on is 25 ep 1198.

The 1897 storyline for the tower which is coming out in April as one of the best of the show or best of Barnabas. DVD 13 ep 718. Barnabas becomes aware that Angelique is in 1897 by the hints she leaves for him. He thinks that she may be the one living in the Tower. We know later that it is crazy Jenny as viewers. He demands she appear and she does. Barnabas and Angelique have a great exchange and she gives him a vision of his last day in the past.

The nice part of this episode is the writers via dialog touch on all the plot points from 1968 to a quick flashback in 1796 and then down to current events in 1897.

Guys,

Please understand I haven't seen these latter episodes, but I get a hoot of Barnabas "admitting" to Angelique that it's "her." Granted, he did her wrong, but her response ended/cursed so many lives. Sara's death, all the other people Barnabas killed when he was a vampire. etc.

It would have been easier if Barnabas had left Josette, no matter how he felt about her, and married Angelique. It would have kept the body count low.

Thank, which one of those is the one where Barnabas admitted he loved her?

Hi James,

Sorry I should have been more clear. The first episode. Next question do you attend the festivals?? Scott and I have yet to do so. Scott and I are part of those kids who ran home from school to see the show. I even received a nice dog bite for the trouble. Refused to seek any medical help until the episode was over.

Hi Scott,

The dog really did me a favor for this reason. I parlayed that dog bite into being excused from PE for one whole week!!! I think we all hated PE back in those days except the Jocks. The whole school was divided into to camps Jocks or I forget what they called us or blanked it out Haha. Here is something else I never told you. I used to take my Mission Impossible reel to reel tape recorder to school and listen to DS Audio tapes during free time. You know I still have those tapes. The cool part is they are like little time capsules because i recorded the credits at the end of each show.

It's neat that he's mindful to some extent of fans of Dark Shadows. I won't be going to Panama any time soon, but I might consider visiting the 'Blue Whale' when I'm back east one day. smiley_wink.gif

MPI has announced (this has already been reported to some extent by another poster on this Board) that they are discontinuing the original series DVDs (those that are currently sold as individual Collections). When I wrote to MPI a few days ago, they said that these are going fairly fast. I've noticed that at least three DVD Collections of The Original Series (not The Beginning Series) are sold out. They also informed me that they do not have any spare cases that hold the four-disc sets, which I found surprising since they have always had several of these to sell when I've asked about them before. This got me to thinking about the repackaging, and how it will be done for the individual Collections now that the Complete Series is being offered in the Coffin Box.

"In other DVD news, MPI Home Video have announced that the existing range of Dark Shadows episode DVD sets are to be discontinued ahead of new re-packaged editions being issued in April. The discontinued DVDs will remain available while stocks last, for those wishing to complete collections in the old design."

There is also news of the first-ever UK release of this show. It will be a compilation of 20 episodes on three discs (Barnabas episodes).

I'm anxious to see what the artwork on the new packaging will look like for the individual sets.

I'm pretty sure they will use slimmer cases, but I wonder if they will create a new design.

I also noticed that the new DVD sets coming out in April have a lower MSRP than the old releases.

Ron,

I wrote to MPI yesterday to ask if any details on the new repackaging (art work, number of discs per individual package, etc.) had been determined. My contact told me that there are no details that she could share at the moment, and that the DVDs were due out in April. I was hoping for a bit more than that.

Given that they have moved away from the thicker cases with the thirty-two (6 + 26) individual boxed sets (I've heard this several times when I have written to them), I would be very surprised if anything but the slimmer cases were to be used for the new individual sets.

Mark,

We're up through episode 510 now. The Dream Curse has taken on some wonderful twists as we get to Prof. Stokes and Sam Evans. It was quite surprising last night, when there was a knock at The Old House door. My daughter and I were trying to guess who it could be, and it turned out to be Sam Evans -- duh! Of course it had to be him, since he led Prof. Stokes through the latter's dream. For some reason, we were naming all sorts of other people. Perhaps Sam being blind prevented us from realizing who it could be. Joe accompanied him, since it would have been a bit difficult for Sam to drive.

I loved how Prof. Stokes told Angelique (in his dream) that there was no way he was going to tell the dream to Sam. So after a bit of hedging, what does Prof. Stokes do when Sam visits The Old House? He begins to tell Sam about his dream, albeit reluctantly.

A couple of interesting things occurred to me while watching episodes 508-510. I believe Sam is the first person to speak to the person having the dream (excluding Angelique, who really doesn't count as she is 'outside' the dream to some extent) -- and yet Sam is blind. This may have nothing to do with the choice to have him speak, but I thought it worth observing. Also, the kinescope episode (509) came as a welcome surprise. (N.B.: For those on the Board who like clean copies of the things they view, this kinescope was among the best.) Episode #509 has Sam helping out Adam when the latter seeks refuge at the Evans' cottage after having jumped off of Widow's Hill. Adam's vocabulary is increasing little by little, and I like how he allowed Sam to tend to some of his wounds ("hurt!"). When Dr. Hoffman put the needle in Adam several episodes ago, Adam wasn't too keen on the pain he felt. But this time around, he trusts the person (Sam) who is inflicting some pain, since he seems to understand that Sam is attempting to help (rather than hurt) him.

The Tony Peterson / Reverend Trask angle is quite interesting. We were trying to recall how the dual persona would be handled once Trask comes out from being bricked up, especially with Peterson still seated at the seance table. For the #510 closing it didn't matter too much, since we only see the bricks move. But for #511, something has to give, other than the bricks. smiley_wink.gif

Hi Scott,

You are about to travel a storyline which was quite good for June of 68. The show will also change to a 3:00 PM CST time in just a few weeks. The credits voice over will state the following. Due to Viewer's demand Dark Shadows will now be aired at 4:00 PM EST and 3:00 PM CST. I may have the date on my audio tapes somewhere. I just remember the time switch. I also remember the episode when time switch happened. Carolyn had begun to take care of Adam in the old farm house basement.

Here are a few more. The show would always catch the viewer up on the events of the last episode as the Dark Shadows theme was played after the first scene of an episode. The show would also tell viewer's during the front theme of a different actor that day.

The show would be bumped for some reason. You would think the next day they would air that bumped epiosode but they did not. DS would air the episode which was suppose to air that day. So they would tell the plot of the episode we missed during front theme.

I know some by heart. With Dirkes assitance Laura discovers Barnabas coffin in the Old House. Knowing that Barnabas is a Vampire Laura opens the coffin and is about to drive a stake into heart of Barnabas.

Chris Jennings has turned into a Werewolf Carolyn hears a voice that of Elizabeth Stoddard warning Carolyn that her life is in danger.

Mark,

Thanks.

"Carolyn had begun to take care of Adam in the old farm house basement."

That's right. I hadn't recalled too that Adam had taken Carolyn to the Taylor farm. That would have been a trivia question that I would have missed had it been asked. And I had completely forgotten that Trask would be a skeleton behind the wall -- duh! That would take care of the simultaneous dual roles I spoke of above.

It was neat seeing an episode with eleven actors in it. Usually you get four or five, and on rarer occasions, six. One of the episodes I watched tonight (#512) had Adam, Sam, Joe, Barnabas, Julia, Trask, Ruby Tate, Maude Browning, Suki Forbes, Nathan Forbes, and the Judge. I believe that there was one episode with (I think) sixteen. That may have been the impending marriage between Jason McGuire and Elizabeth, but I can't recall for certain.

MPI probably doesn't want to reveal the art work until all the old sets have dried up.

I'm hoping that as we get closer to April 1st, that they will lower the price on the old sets even more (but that's just me wishful thinking).
I'm pretty sure the new sets will be the exact same content and number of discs as the former sets, just slimmer cases and new artwork.

walmart has them up for pre-order. Lowest price I've seen for these new sets: $24.96 (38% off list price)

Still no artwork but it gives the specifications:

Product in Inches (L x W x H): 5.5 x 0.5 x 7.44

So according to them, it will be 1/2" thick.

They also give a description of the product and the special features.

Sounds the same as the previous release.

Ron,

Thanks for the updated information. Those new cases -- if the 1/2" thick dimension you mention above holds true to form -- would be even slimmer than the current Dark Shadows 'slim' cases, which are just under one inch (app. 7/8").

When I was in the process of completing my Dark Shadows DVD collection (all 32 individual boxes), I had to purchase a couple of volumes online from sellers specifically because MPI had only the thicker cases remaining. I wanted my collection to be in the slimmer cases, mostly for reasons of uniformity. I had a couple of sellers assure me that their cases were of the 1" variety, only to discover that when I received them, they were the 1.5" inch cases. Ugh. It's probably not a big deal to some, but it was to me. Going to check out your link now.

Kind of surprised we haven't seen a press release from MPI on the Box set etc. Esp since it will be out in Early April. I would love to see what the real box set will look like as opposed to a computer generated mock up. (at least that is what the images look like to me) I've had it pre-ordered from the time we all caught word the pre-order went up.

You could call MPI and at least get the flyer sent to you. I received this a few weeks ago, and it shows the box and gives information on what will be included in it. It's a bit better than a computer-generated mock-up. smile.gif

MPI should send that out to www.tvshowsondvd.com and they could post it. I can wait... just odd they aren't getting those posted online.

Mark,

We watched eight more episodes the past two days, and are now through to no. 522. We begin disc four of DVD Collection 8 next. The special feature on disc three was of John Karlen (Willie Loomis). You can really tell how much he appreciated being able to do whatever he wanted with his role as Willie, and how much he loved working on Dark Shadows.

We just had the introduction of Nicholas Blair. He is scheming (with the help of the portrait) how he is going to bring Angelique back from wherever she is at the moment. As far as Roger, Julia, Barnabas, et al. are concerned, she's ... 'disappeared' for the time being.

I loved it when Blair introduced himself to Julia and Barnabas as Cassandra's brother. Since they know who Cassandra really is, this means Blair is either about 175 years old or a liar -- perhaps both.

Every now and then, we'll watch a batch of Dark Shadows episodes in one sitting. Yesterday, we watched another ten episodes, and have now completed episode no. 533 (menu numbering for the final episode on disc four of DVD Collection 8 = 532/533). We'll be moving on to Collection 9 next. Disc four had an informative interview with Dan Curtis. I'd heard some of it before, but not all of it. It was quite interesting to hear about the auditioning of various actors, blocking, editing, and filming, and how that first show finally came to completion after much hard work. I'd never thought of other shows needing to use the same cameras that were earmarked for Dark Shadows at a specific time. Curtis pointed out that if they didn't use the cameras at the specified time, they would lose them to (e.g.) another soap that was filming at nearly the same time as Dark Shadows.

Poor Joe Haskell. First, he's mistaken for Nathan Forbes by Jeff Clark (Peter Bradford), then he's choked as Jeff wakes up from his 1795 dream, and then Adam attacks him at The Old House. We left off with Barnabas offering to marry Cassandra if she will stop the dream curse. She informs Nicholas Blair of her apparent victory, and he's not too pleased, citing their pre-arranged 'bargain.' I wish they had explained what this arrangement was, but if memory serves, they never do elaborate too much on it later in the series.

HI Scott.

Scott I also was thinking about the many people in one episode. I thought maybe during Vickys trial. The funny thing is in Quentin's trial they used recorded voices and in Pt 1841 spoke to empty space while the shot stayed on the face of the actor.

I forgot to mention another trial of the dead. Magda had a trial in the Collins tomb in 1897. You notice as in Barnabas case only one person spoke for the people. You are right! The bargain is never explained. I also love when Carolyn and Nicholas have a show down. Carolyn is now once again head of the family because of her Mother being locked away at Wyndcliff. I often thought that Joan Bennett had a time off clause in her contract. She is gone in the summer of 68 and the early months of 67 once more gone again in 1969 and for a few weeks in 1970.

Now the storyline really ramps up for you. I happen to love that episode where Barnabas goes to Angelique asking her to stop the dream curse.

Scott you also have me wanting to buy the new set. I did start to watch the edited Barnabas eps that MPI put out last year I think. I found it quite good. I am going to buy the two new ones MPI is puting out.

I have thoughts why the series was canceled. The media said cost was a factor also the ratings were not as good as a soap called Somerset which was opposite the show. The latter statements were from the media which we fans were given at the time. I found it ironic that The Edge O Night ended up in the DS time slot and ran longer then DS.

What are my ideas about why the show was canceled? Barnabas was gone. The show ended in PT 1841. Grayson and Jonathan had next to nothing as far as scene's were in PT 1840.

1840 used very little of Barnabas. I even had begun to edit my audio tapes after i listened to the show. I think that alone showed me the show was getting hard to be involved with.

Here is another fact. Sam Hall wrote a tribute to the show and gave sign posts as he said to where the show was going. The whole thing was told by Roger Davis at the end of the show on dvd 26 i believe. The one thing which was left out was this.

Roger Collins found Barnabas Coffin in the Old House Basement. He kept it secret from the family and tried to destroy Barnabas. Angelique saved Barnabas by killing Roger. She told Barnbas and he felt very guilty. Willie and Julia told Barnabas he must leave Collinwood which he and Julia did. The ghost of Roger Collins haunted Collinwood and could be seen pointing a finger at Barnabas portrait.

Mark,

We watched another ten episodes yesterday, and are now up to #550. The interview with Robert Rodan (DVD Collection 9, Disc 2) was great. Even though I own all of the VHS tapes, I had never seen that particular interview before. Hearing of his work on Dark Shadows, and of some of the humor that went on behind the scenes, was quite enjoyable. I found the techniques Rodan used to come off sounding like he was just beginning to learn the English language to be interesting, too. He studied children, and their reactions to various sudden noises to replicate how he would react when he heard a particular noise in a given scene.

I thought it was a hoot how Carolyn was doing such a good job of hiding Adam in the West Wing, and in a very short time, it seems that half of Collinsport eventually knows where Adam is hiding. smiley_wink.gif In the course of about a half dozen episodes, you have Harry Johnson (good blackmail material from Carolynn here -- Harry would be wise not to cross Carolyn), Cassandra / Angelique, Nicholas Blair, Prof. Stokes, etc., all discovering Adam's whereabouts. N.B.: During our viewing, I had to remind one of my younger daughters (she left the room for a few minutes and as a result had missed the Nicholas / Adam exchange) that Nicholas had lied to Adam and had told him to do many wrong things to Carolyn. Otherwise, she would have wondered why Adam, whom had been on his best behavior, suddenly changed from good to bad.

There was a scene when someone (it could have been Nicholas or Barnabas) walks out of the main door to the Great House. Usually, you see the ivy hanging down on the outside wall when the door is opened. But in this episode, I saw a set wall -- and it was quite a shock. It reminded me of seeing the blank wall (where a planet was supposed to be) on the view screen in one of the season three episodes of TOS.

BTW Mark,

We were just discussing David Henesy the other day. His mother (Jeanne Avery) passed away last month. I have the special feature of them together on Generation Gap (included on the Dark Shadows: Bloopers & Treasures DVD).

Roy,

Agreed. I'm really looking forward to it.

Here is a relatively brief introduction to some of the major players in the new film, together with stills of whom they will be playing from the original series. It's probably somewhat useful for those who may not be all that initiated with the 1966-1971 series.
